300 - Image 1Thanks to recent Spartan blockbuster 300, the Blu-ray format has extended its lead over rival HD-DVD in terms of discs and players sold in the United States.

According to Home Media Research, 300 has sold 250,000 copies in HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats combined. Of that figure, 65 percent was credited to Blu-ray while 35 percent was contributed by HD-DVD.

The film is now the biggest-selling HD movie yet. The Spider-Man movies and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End are also expected to sell well during their holiday season releases. Blu-ray is expected to edge HD-DVD in sales again.

Analysts and research groups say that the success of Blu-ray as a format can be credited to Sony's PlayStation 3 game console which has a Blu-ray drive included in its specifications. The distribution of the PS3 broadened the Blu-ray market significantly by growing the user base.

With all the success tallied by the next-gen format groups, some research groups still say that high-definition still isn't enjoying mass support. The ABI Research firm, for one, thinks prices should dip for greater sales to follow.

"There will be downward pressure on prices for players of all types: ABI Research believes that prices will have to drop below $200 before true mass adoption takes off," writes the firm.

Why don't we just end this silly war right now and Toshiba and Universal give up on HD-DVD?

The news of 300 selling 250,000 HD copies is old, but the statistics of which HD format sold more of those copies isn't, as far as I know.

I also believe the price of the Movies themselves have to fall. Paying $30 per movie is alot for most people.

But Im not worried. DVDs did the same thing. I remember when they were around $30 to.

# European Bleu RayGuest 2007-08-12 21:59
it would be nice for all those blue ray movies to show up here in Europe, the list here is very short here.

why oh why did they region coded it again, and why do we have to wait years for some smuck to write the subtitles that are not right any way !!

they have more HD-DVD in the shelves then Blue rays, if they don't watch out HD-DVD will still win due to having more titles !

They only sell HD DVD on that scale in the US. In the rest of the world (Japan and Europe) It's all blu-ray.

# well yea...Guest 2007-08-13 03:01
but then you have to think about it ppl said the same about $60 for a game and I don't think $30 is alot if you spent over 1k on a TV setup

Yeah the price for HDDVD is outrageous, Target is selling 300 for $35(HD) & $25(BR) and Walmart has 300 for 30(HD) & $25(BR).

Did anyone bother comparing both 300 movies. The HD-DVD version had way more extra content than the Blu-Ray. You would think its the other way, but it's not.

uhh no it doesnt, 300 on hd-dvd does have more content. It has a special version of the movie that has voice overs from zack snyder and shows u every shot in blue screen with the final cut in the background. Its actually pretty cool and its something that blu ray doesnt support yet. Those prices btw are off, i purchased my copy of 300 from wal-mart at 24.99

True it is abit to much for mainstream buyers and now that you mention it I think it might reach $20 in the 2nd year of only one of the formats

they're talking about the US, not Australia, or the rest of the world. The rest of the world, BR/300 or any other multi title will be leading by a lot over HD-DVD.

I have 300 on blue ray and wen i play the movie my tv says 1080i not 1080p and my tv is suppose to get 1080p.Do i need to mess around with some of the options on the PS3 to get 1080p?

And another thing when i set the options for 1080p it says if your tv dosent support it it will go blank for 30 seconds. And it goes plank.I dont get it my TV has 1080P!!!!
