Blu-ray Not Launching This Summer? |

Apparently, two behemoth companies are planning on delaying the release of their respective Blu-ray products. The two companies? Pioneer and Panasonic. The new launch date? After the launch of the Sony PS3. This tidbit was exposed during the annual High End Trade Fair in Munich, Germany. As Pioneer showed off their Blu-ray disc player, tagged as the BDP-HD1 (left pic), which they announced during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, some Pioneer officials said that they are looking at November 2006 as a possible launch date. When in November? After the PS3 launch. The people over at Panasonic also said the same thing about their Blu-ray innovation, the DMP-BD10 (right pic).
There are other vague reports saying that the Sony BDP-S1 would be arrive by mid-August 2006 and that Sony has started replicating Blu-ray discs in the U.S. Whether the delays over at Pioneer and Panasonic has a connection with the Sony Blu-ray discs-replicating affair, is something that we can only speculate about. As for the price tags of the said Blu-ray products, the Sony variant will go for roughly USD$1,000 ($999.99 to be exact), the Pioneer one has a reported price tag of USD$1,800, and the Panasonic Blu-ray player will sell for roughly USD$1,500. And how much is the PS3 again?

But is it just me or does the red button on the remote look like a record?
I know PS3 can't do that...

...yes, even one of the players has 1 terabyte of recordable hard drive space...

Alot of people are complaing about the price of PS3. When you look at how much just a stand alone player is I dont see why people still continue to *****. I think its a great deal all things considered.

Its not the same as what happened with dvds and the ps2. (ie vhs tapes were crap quality, and dvd was an already an established standard)
Its not exactly needed for games at the moment either.
That is to say the switch to dvd was because games were coming on 4 cds with the playstation.
Currently no console games even use the full 8.5gigs of a dual layer dvd.
Even the extremely large and great looking game Oblivion only uses about 5 gigs of a single dvd.
If the go over 8.5gigs you can always use another disc
The idea of a cheap Bluray player (or any high definition video player) is daft being its whole point is quality, and consoles arent know for having the best video playback quality.
Im also betting the price of a Bluray player at $1000 or so dollars, its artificially high, they must be making at least 500 or so dollars profit on each unit.
Only videophiles currently are willing to spend a premium on HD video and television, current the general public couldnt give a hoot.

(#10 and mostly everybody) sure games dont use that much memory at the minute and they have brilliant graphics like you said BUT you never see games that have a MASSIVE level or playing area. just think about GTA with more memory to make a game 2, 3, 4 or 5 times the size that san andreas is! and they could even be bigger than that! sure the graphics wont be a huge step away from current-gen graphics but the gaming will last longer with more to do and discover!

Theres a new game comming out for the xbox360 thats 390 square miles. Thats over 20 times larger than San Andreas, it is very much possible to get a large game world that looks good out of a single DVD9
More info about that game is here http://www.xboxyde.com/news_3000_11626_2_en.html
I do however agree with you that if Sony want to get this format used they need to release it now and for cheaper than $1000.
Their main competition HD-DVD has been out in the use since mid april and current the player sell for about $500-700

anyone ever wonder how much the ps3 games will be??
I can just imagine Sony charging 80 to 100 dollars for games...CAN YOU?!!
do the math...
more storage means more content, more content means more programmers working their asses off..
which leads to more money being demanded...which means more money to pay for the games....
I wanna see how sony pulls this one off...(chuckling)

and i could just imagine R* trying to fill up like 50gb of space for a console that wont make up that much of the market... it would be 10x bigger and that means about 5x the cost of production.

say there was a $100,000 rare vase, someone would sell it to you for $5000, sure its 95% cheaper than it should be, but the bottom line is that you are paying $5,000 for a vase that is worthless to you.
thats just to demonstrate the point, just because the blu ray is cheap doesn't mean its worthwhile, blu ray won't look any different than DVD unless you have an amazing 1080P tv, which I doubt 95% of the people even buying a ps3 will have. For the next few years, DVD will be better than blu ray because of accessability, lack of DRM, and price per disc

sony putting BD in the PS3 is sony's way at making more money.
i like my consoles with no strings attached.

people need to quit being like "PS3 is worth it because it has blu ray" that's only relevant if someone was expecting to buy a blu ray player anyway.

Dude no one is saying it is worth it because of Blu Ray, if you haven't noticed it is people like you who keep saying it is not worth it because of Blu Ray so shut up. PS3 is worth it for many diffren't reasons.

for the consumer, ok, right now games aren't quite filling dvd-9s but there could be so much on there which isn't already. there are loads of games whose extras are just rubbish... with so much space to spare the bluray discs can feature all sorts.
it's about the FUTURE, game developers will prefer to work with more space than less. the various features of ps3 are either well placed in today's household, wifi, pvr... etc. or they're more forward looking bits like bluray.
yeah 600 dollars is expensive, but i don't shop at iceland, and that's dirt cheap... you know why? they sell crap. you get what you pay for, if you're unwilling to pay then go for the inferior systems or just whinge some more.

people, don't get PS3 if your wallet is not deep enough kids, there is alway x2 on the shelf for you to get.
And which idiot said you need 1080p TV to see the difference? PS3 is definitely not for you since you don't even know what you are buying.
beside there will be 50g space for gaming(and they are making 4 layers as well).
and please, don't ever try to prove the "more space is better" theory wrong.

the movie industry looks pretty much split. so that's no help. I think most will support both till there is a winner, they are not dumb...
