Seems like Blockbuster's apparent endorsement of the Blu-ray format cannot be taken for granted, what with its 1,450 stores nationwide offering only movies in Blu-ray format. According to a post on Gizmodo, an unnamed retailing source observed a whole slew of HD-DVD orders getting cancelled after Blockbuster announced its support of Blu-ray.If the rumor holds true, it's not really that surprising: more entertainment studios are supporting Blu-ray, not to mention that HD-DVD player sales are weakening. However, this rumor needs to be backed up with substantial numbers of similar accounts happening in other retail stores.

This is not a surprise!!! Who wants to go for HD-DVD now that a big entertainment company like Blockbuster has choosen BD after several months on market study and consumers interest...

I am so glad to have a PS3, I knew it was the right choice for game AND entertainment !!!
I'm waiting for Netflix to officially drop HD-DVD. They only show having 20 titles but you know there are more and compared to the nearly 300 Blu-ray titles they have, this does not show well for HD-DVD over at Netflix either.
Aren't people supposed to decide what they want instead of corporations?
I still haven't heard any sales reports of dedicated blu ray players. Is sony keeping those sales stats secret? For $700 (at the cheapest) they can't be selling that great either.
Wal mart still exclusively sells HD-DVD, and as the biggest retail chain in the US, that is a huge advantage.
Also, is QJ still keeping this one sided by keeping this out of the XBOX 360 section? I mean, MS still makes a HD-DVD attachment for the 360 ya know?

This is on the PS3 section because the PS3 comes with a built in BRD player and the games are in BRD, NEVER will you see a 360 game on HD-DVD making the add-on unneeded, unworthy of mention.

bluray doesnt look that goood. it looks like a regular dvd player. an hd dvd is outselling bluray 3-1 in japan. so this war is far from over. an as for the ps3 the built in BRD rips cds apart an make you have to get new ones. the 360 hd dvd add on plays even scratched cds. bluray is doomed!!!!!

Since when was Wal-Mart exclusively selling HD-DVD? I've purchased two Blu-ray movies from Wal-Mart a month or two ago.
Those of you who didnt buy hddvd for the 360 have killed the format. Looks like Sony is smarter than MS. By including blu ray in the PS3 they have secured blu ray as the next format. Also, PS3 and PSP have the highest rated games over 50% while the Wii and the DS have the lowest rated games. The article I got this from made this conclusion: "People don't care about the quality of games, they only buy the cheap ones." Or something very similar. It was a funny article and the truth.

Id say its 100% because of the PS3 that Blu Ray is doing much better. The install base is much greater, and much bigger studio support mean the retailers will want what will get them more sales - and cut back on whats lacking.

However out of the movie world, and into the game world, this is what is happening to Sony. Many former PS exclusive developers, and new IPs are going multiplat or exclusive to 360 because of the install base (and cheaper development costs). This influx in developers means more sucess for Msoft, in games and sales, and the developers + publishers are happy.
Now I own a 360, and plan to buy a PS3, but the facts are HD DVD bites the big ones - no question, its not destined for sucess or longevity.
In terms of games the 360 does trump the PS3 in all aspects. Hopefully Sony will regain some lost ground by 08.

I would have to disagree with you completely. I to own a 360 and i have bought 2 game in the last 9 months. Forza2 and Gears of War. Only 2 quality game have come out in that time. Do have any idea what kind of library of games PS3 has??? The answer to me seems no. Sure they havent come out yet but thats because devs are spending a lot of time making the games that are true to sony awesome.

Dont even get me started on hardware. Yes i would agree that the GPU in 360 is better but dont give me that crap that it has DX10 feature because it doesnt. Im going to say the big word CELL. I know all yu xbox360 fanboys go bu but teh cell. I just laugh everytime i see that. Cell was practically designed to work with RSX. So were RSX is weak the cell picks up its slack since it can do both CPU feature and GPU features(well emulate them atleast). Sony even thought about just using cell in the PS3. Thats how powerful cell is. As soon as devs slowly but surely unleash cell in the next year or so games are going to look and feel that much better.
Funny thing is that I am a PC gamer. Always have been. Most of you people have no idea how some of these thing work you only think you do. Like 360 3 core processor is equivalent to a pentium4 at about 3.0Ghz. Dont even get me started with 8800GTX/GTS, HD2900XT/XTX>>>>PS3GPU, 360 GPU. Next gen consoles came out to late. There were already behind when they were released. Unlike last gen when PC took about a year to catch up. By the next time consoles come out. We will have integrated CPU and GPU together.

Numbers dont lie while the Xbox is still in the lead gaming wise, HD-DVD is a dying format(too quickly if you ask me) It is being outsold and more studios are signing with Blu-ray, hell even Neil Thompson MS regional Director of the UK said in an interview with the BBC that if consumers want it they will support it. i think it is you who needs to look at the facts and do research...if you say hd dvd is selling better in japan..maybe it is i dont actually know..big whoop anyway - japan will not influence the battle in the slightest. i read an article the other week which said the format war is europe is basically over, with blu-ray flying ahead, and its reckonded this is the situation across the world - the only place left undecided is the USA..now that blockbuster has turned to blu-ray, other companies are likly to follow, forcing Universal to support blu-ray - giving blu-ray all the studios, thus ending the format war.

for those of you that somehow believe that HD-DVD's are selling better than Blue Ray disks, understand why Blockbuster is backing Blue Ray. They did market research selling both media formats in 250 stores, and 70% of the consumer base would choose Blue Ray over HD-DVD.

They CANT rent DS games (or at least it would be hard) because the game saves on the cartridge itself. So they would have to delete the saves everytime the game is returned. PSP on the other hand saves on memory card that you keep with yourself. Have some common sense!
