Blu-ray hits Target: major retailer joins Blu-ray bandwagon, HD-DVD players go MIA |

Looks like the HD-DVD format is being left out in the cold this holiday season. Following Blockbuster's announcement of a Blu-ray exclusivity deal, this new announcement from Target is looking like the format wars' final nail on the coffin.
The Associated Press has just released a statement that Target, second-largest retail outlet in the US, will be bringing the Blu-ray under the spotlight this holiday season. They're going to be pushing up Blu-ray players and discs all the way to the front displays, specifically, the endcaps of the store aisles.
Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray player will be sold come October for US$ 499, and flanking it on the shelves would be Blu-ray movies from Sony Pictures and Walt Disney.
It might be worth of note that Target would still continue selling HD-DVD items, like the Xbox 360's HD-DVD add-on. But it seems as if, on the disc player side of things, the retail chain will only carry Blu-ray players from Sony and not HD-DVD players (with an exception to Toshiba's HD-DVD player which is available on the Target website). So, like the deal with Blockbuster, Sony's hand on Target looks like a pretty secure lock-out.
Target is to make its official announcement of the deal with Sony come Thursday.

False alarm: Target's not giving up on HD DVD

It looks like the hd-dvd external player for the x360 is really useless... I hope M$ will do a BD-player also. I mean, it's not the game division of sony that make the BDs anyway.
ps: I don't care about hd-dvd anyway, I don't care if they are faster. I mean, BDs read fast enough to play the games and the movies, that's what I want (I won't cry because I can't press fast foward till x999999....). The fact that BDs can hold more than twice as more on the disc is enough. But when the HVD will pop, BDs are gonna die (HVDs will hold a maximum of 1.3t of space, lol (1300gig)). But HVDs are for 2010 min, so I'll take BD for now at least.

Tech industry sucks... they should sell BD player cheaper (i like this choice) or havent put a BD on the ps3 and make it cheaper
HD-DVD's players are cheaper, which is great imo. You have already spent a hell lot of money on a HDTV to view those movies to pay 500$ on a player or a ps3 to watch a movie.
and yeah BD is better, but man if it is more expensive, and both can contain a full 1080p movie on em, i don't care.

I guess That means people won't buy HD-DVD drives anymore.
Also Good for you Sony, For getting an exclusive deal for this holiday, this could be what the ps3 needs.

And to the guy above you. Blu-ray disc's are not 35 to 60 gb. Single layers are 25 gb while dual layers are 50 gb.
Reply
more is better so why battle the obvious, HD-DVD should give up and support bluray development so that companies from both sides can earn profits, its whats doing business is for isnt it?
Reply
Big deal that guy made a mistake it happens. but for the most part he is correct.

Procedural synthesis can be used for just about any type of texture as well - grass, concrete, bricks, skin, hair/fur, etc.
Of course, better processing and better programming leads to higher compression as well. 9GB is more than enough for next-gen games.

and what not that is what HD movies are umcompressed data thats what makes it look really good look at mp3 files if one file went at 320 bit rate it would sound really good but that file would take up a hella more space than the same mp3 file but going at 80 bit rate might sound a little worse but takes up less space. This is why blu-ray is winning more space not smaller files compressing them again would make you fill like your watching a vhs you dont understand technology.

In that case i would get a ps3. Maybe they reduce the price by then.

Consumers hate this stupid format war and don't want either. Except of course desperate PS3 owners who don't have anything better to do with the failing console. No decent games will be out until 2008 so they need something to do in the meantime. Why else would PS3s boost blu ray sales so much?

The fact these rumors get started, and spread so quickly is evidence of market tampering by the blu ray association. Isn't somebody out there investigating this?
Have they been paid off (or killed) already? Didn't Pabulo Escobar once say, silver or lead? As in, if you didn't accept his bribe money you got lead instead?

The article doesn't say Target is giving up on HD-DVD. So where is the false alarm?
The fact is Blu-Ray will be up front and the average buyer will see it first. Then they'll want a player for their new Blu-Ray disc and guess what, that's going to be a Blu-Ray player.
So go suck a fat *****.
