Blu-ray hits Target: major retailer joins Blu-ray bandwagon, HD-DVD players go MIA

Blu-ray to get spotlight in Target - Image 1

Looks like the HD-DVD format is being left out in the cold this holiday season. Following Blockbuster's announcement of a Blu-ray exclusivity deal, this new announcement from Target is looking like the format wars' final nail on the coffin.

The Associated Press has just released a statement that Target, second-largest retail outlet in the US, will be bringing the Blu-ray under the spotlight this holiday season. They're going to be pushing up Blu-ray players and discs all the way to the front displays, specifically, the endcaps of the store aisles.

Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray player will be sold come October for US$ 499, and flanking it on the shelves would be Blu-ray movies from Sony Pictures and Walt Disney.

It might be worth of note that Target would still continue selling HD-DVD items, like the Xbox 360's HD-DVD add-on. But it seems as if, on the disc player side of things, the retail chain will only carry Blu-ray players from Sony and not HD-DVD players (with an exception to Toshiba's HD-DVD player which is available on the Target website). So, like the deal with Blockbuster, Sony's hand on Target looks like a pretty secure lock-out.

Target is to make its official announcement of the deal with Sony come Thursday.

Sooner this stupid little war is over the better, it was always clear Blu ray would be more popular. Just hope the remaining movie companies switch over and FOX finally get around to putting Blu ray Box Sets of TV shows out.

It's so wrong of Microsoft to continue pushing the clearly inferior HD-DVD format . They're marketing the product in hopes of upgrading the consumer in the future while Blu-ray more or less forces technology to progress. GOod riddance to bad rubbish

wow you all must be ps3 owners. In no way is this the final nail in hd-dvd coffin. At the moment BOTH formats are selling terribly just like they have been since they were released. The truth is neither format is making a big enough push to become the mainstream. Both formats WILL co-exist till DVR set boxes reign supreme.

BDs are selling almost twice as fast as hd-dvds... Surely because sony own a lot of movie companies and because toshiba own zero movie company... I mean, with all the big studio, even walt disney is with BD. I don't see why people should buy an hd-dvd player, you can only watch the matrix (even if the movie was good, it's a bit lame to pay that much for a bunch a titles...).

It looks like the hd-dvd external player for the x360 is really useless... I hope M$ will do a BD-player also. I mean, it's not the game division of sony that make the BDs anyway.

ps: I don't care about hd-dvd anyway, I don't care if they are faster. I mean, BDs read fast enough to play the games and the movies, that's what I want (I won't cry because I can't press fast foward till x999999....). The fact that BDs can hold more than twice as more on the disc is enough. But when the HVD will pop, BDs are gonna die (HVDs will hold a maximum of 1.3t of space, lol (1300gig)). But HVDs are for 2010 min, so I'll take BD for now at least. :D And with a bit of chance, we'll have no more "disc" to buy around 2015, all downloads.

# how the hell!Guest 2007-07-28 19:38
How the hell do they sell a freaking BD p layer for 499 if you got a ps3 for that same money?!

Tech industry sucks... they should sell BD player cheaper (i like this choice) or havent put a BD on the ps3 and make it cheaper

HD-DVD's players are cheaper, which is great imo. You have already spent a hell lot of money on a HDTV to view those movies to pay 500$ on a player or a ps3 to watch a movie.

and yeah BD is better, but man if it is more expensive, and both can contain a full 1080p movie on em, i don't care.

hd dvd just takes up more space. bluray adds a lot more data on one disc than hd dvd can not do. just imagine gta 5 on xbox not possible because it would have enough room in it, seriously.plus japan made bluray and you know japan is in advance in technology. we get the stuff 2 or 5 years later. unless its very popular.bluray disc are from 35 to 60 gb

This wasn't a surprise actually. I mean Once Devs make doubled Dual layered disc for the ps3 They may not want to return to HD-DVD, Also Blu-ray has been Far more superior everywhere other than the U.S As a matter of fact there isn't even a Format war outside of U.S cause BD has been winning in a landslide. So i guess this could be final Nail in the coffin Sony has been saying for awhile.

I guess That means people won't buy HD-DVD drives anymore.

Also Good for you Sony, For getting an exclusive deal for this holiday, this could be what the ps3 needs.

And to the guy above you. Blu-ray disc's are not 35 to 60 gb. Single layers are 25 gb while dual layers are 50 gb.

why not just stop this stupid war and combine the resources and technologies which can create a better and efficient method of delivering high quality movies at a price that the general consumer may find appealing and practical.

more is better so why battle the obvious, HD-DVD should give up and support bluray development so that companies from both sides can earn profits, its whats doing business is for isnt it?

Your the one who can't read Joe dirt. It doesn't matter who wrote this article the fact is read the source article which clearly says they weren't getting rid of the HDDVD player, just not doing the standalone promotions with it stupid. And yes that link from the person replying to the first poster did show a link, however that article is just reiterating what this one has said.

Big deal that guy made a mistake it happens. but for the most part he is correct.

As technology and development techniques increase, there should be less of a requirement for disc space, not more. With better realtime graphics, there should be less need for FMV.

Procedural synthesis can be used for just about any type of texture as well - grass, concrete, bricks, skin, hair/fur, etc.

Of course, better processing and better programming leads to higher compression as well. 9GB is more than enough for next-gen games.

Seriously, if it wasn't for the PS3 the HD-DVD would be dominating everywhere by a huge landslide. Hell I'd get an HD-DVD player myself, it's an amazing deal, for $230 you get a full 1080p movie player that up-converts DVDs, that's $50 more then a standalone up-converting DVD player. This is compared with one that lacks any real advantage and yet costs $500. Now the PS3 has been a perfect way for Sony to sneak into the market, and now that they've got it down they'll probably dominate.

Next gen games and are more detailed than ever before look at old computers they took up so little space on a hard drive but look at the more technology advanced the better it got with graphics

and what not that is what HD movies are umcompressed data thats what makes it look really good look at mp3 files if one file went at 320 bit rate it would sound really good but that file would take up a hella more space than the same mp3 file but going at 80 bit rate might sound a little worse but takes up less space. This is why blu-ray is winning more space not smaller files compressing them again would make you fill like your watching a vhs you dont understand technology.

# yeah good answer...Guest 2007-07-29 04:50
Im just sayin that if a player is THAT expensive i don't know... in the case same movies were available i would go for HD-DVD. in the other case, ill wait cause 500 usd a player is just too much.

In that case i would get a ps3. Maybe they reduce the price by then.

Compression is good for some things but not the answer to high quality. Uncompressed is always a better experience. What you are saying is like saying MP3 sounds better than cd or something. 9gb is not enough for future games that are truly next gen experiences. Even the Heavenly Sword demo I downloaded the other day that was only about 5 minutes long was almost 1gb.

sony helped push the cd format.if it wasn't for sony, dvd probably wouldn't be where it is today cause it pushed dvd.Now they are doing it again with a superior format. The ps3 is a computer, media player which supports all formats in these catagories(cd,m usic files, dvd, photo s,video files, blue ray),has a web browser, and three gen game systems inside it(ps1,ps2,ps3).Not to mention the fact that you can pretty much add new features to your system every month with the free internet service that is provided.

Hmm spend $30 for a HD movie I watch maybe twice, or spend $65 a month for full HD sattelite service with HD recorder so I can record any HD movie I want on HBO, watch it all I want, then delete it when I'm sick of it.

Consumers hate this stupid format war and don't want either. Except of course desperate PS3 owners who don't have anything better to do with the failing console. No decent games will be out until 2008 so they need something to do in the meantime. Why else would PS3s boost blu ray sales so much?

Link is at the top, posted by Devise.

The fact these rumors get started, and spread so quickly is evidence of market tampering by the blu ray association. Isn't somebody out there investigating this?

Have they been paid off (or killed) already? Didn't Pabulo Escobar once say, silver or lead? As in, if you didn't accept his bribe money you got lead instead?

# You forgetGuest 2007-07-29 07:09
why'd they get smaller again? No FMV's sure, but adding more textures and sounds make a game much more real and varied, and they take up a ton of room. Besides, more space means more content, less compression (compression ALWAYS sucks) and better audio, so why complain?
