Blu-ray, HD-DVD, and plans for future hybrid formats |

Ó
We interrupt the game news with hardware "news" (more sales figures, an exec says something quotable, intercorporate politics, and questions about game format).Parts of the porn industry may have "sided" with HD-DVD, but according to NPD sales figures, Blu-ray is still way ahead. Not that the HD-DVD Xbox 360 add-on isn't moving: the MS hardware sold an impressive 92,000 units in the last two months of 2006! But Sony's Blu-ray has sold 687,000 units in the PS3.
Still, Richard Parsons, CEO of Time Warner (Time Warner supports both HD-DVD and Blu-ray) says the PS3 sales figure doesn't necessarily mean Blu-ray is winning the format war. "Do I think that the game console platform is really going to drive the conversion?" Parsons said, "I don't think so. People get those things [PS3s] to play games, not watch movies."
The real winner will be determined by the sales of HD-DVD and Blu-ray players. Or both could end up as losers with some companies opting to manufacture a compromise. Warner Brothers is fielding Total HD, a disc that can play both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD media. Meanwhile, LG Electronics has its Super Multi Blue player which plays both formats.
What would be interesting would be a hybrid HD-DVD/Blu-ray format. That should end all this brouhaha about which HD-DVD versus Blu-ray, so we can finally stop arguing about disc players and start talking about what matters most: game titles. Right? Right?

blueray dvd player is the main reason for the high price,
and who won't be interested watching blueray dvds on their ps3?
I bought hd dvd drive 2 months ago, and now I use ps3, considering selling hd dvd drive away.

BTW, does anyone have a link to figures of Blu-ray/HD-DVD movies sales?

Coz the feature is there...
The PS3 will do for blu-ray what the PS2 did for DVD... Get it in peoples homes.
U gotta pretty pretty stupid if you honestly think PS3 owners won't watch blu-ray movies on it.
It doesn't cost extra to watch it - unlike the 360 and they don't have to spend 800USD to buy another one.
Common Sense...

Those with PS3's are likely to rent Blueray disks when they have that option. (Even if they don't have the TV to support it)

Fact being, those who have a PS3 and an HDTV to enjoy Blu-ray movies will eventually if not already enjoy high def movies.
Fact being, right now there are more Blu-ray players in peoples homes then HD DVD players. Once people start seeing the drastic difference between DVD and High Def movies, they wont turn back.
Watching a DVD movie to me now is just not enjoyable as it use to be.
In the end, its still 150k Add-Ons sold, about 100k+ Standalone units, compared to 1 million+ PS3s and Standalone players sold.

just because there are more blu-ray players because of ps3 doesnt mean that they are doing better
blu-ray is doing worse in market sales ratios with hd-dvd standalones and movies purchased....thats BAD for blu-ray last time i checked
and u cant compare the hd-dvd addon with the ps3 since a majority of people arent buying it for blu-ray movies.
you also forgot to include standalone sales
Reply
people who bought the hd-dvd addon bought it 100% to play hd-dvds
not all the people who bought a ps3 bought it for blu-ray movies
thats why u cant compare the 2 sales
ok to the guy who said because of ps3, the ratio of bluray to hd-dvd PLAYERS is 5 to 1?
actualy its 4 to 1
BUT the ration of HD-DVD and BLU-RAY movies bought
is 6 to 1..
hd-dvd movies sales are doing drasticaly better
Reply
the ratios gonna be like 10 hd-dvds for every blu-ray movie sold
we love our pr0n a little too much

dont pull numbers out ur ass...thats impossible u idiot..100%? are u stupid?
thats not a fact u dumb a s s
and dont say "U GOTTA BE STUPID IF U THINK PS3 OWNERS ARENT GOING TO WATCH BLU-RAY"
alot of ps3 owners dont even HAVE HDTVS, why the hell would they get blu-ray movies then?
ur 100% figure just got wrecked on
and the only reason people who dont have hdtvs buy ps3s is for games!
NOT FOR BLURAY
BLURAY IS HD
THEY DONT HAVE HDTVS
THINK BEFORE U TYPE SMART AS S

Jan 9, 2007 - Blu-ray Software Sales Surpass HD-DVD
Posted January 9, 2007 by Marwin
Blu-ray Disc Blu-ray software sales have now surpassed HD-DVD for the first time the week of December 24 and they did so by an impressive 20 percent. The sales gap is expected to widen further in 2007 based on research conducted by Twentieth Century Fox and Blu-ray is expected to outsell HD-DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of the first quarter.
One of the driving factors behind the growth in sales is the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was launched on November 17, 2006 in North America. The PS3 has been selling out at retail outlets since it was launched and despite shortages Sony has been able to meet its target of shipping 1 million PS3s in North America by the end of 2006. What's even more impressive is that they did it faster than their top-selling PlayStation 2 (PS2) platform did when it was launched. Sony is now targetting 6 million PS3 consoles shipped worldwide by the end of the fiscal year (end of March 2007).
While many have doubted the effect the PlayStation 3 would have on the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD it's hard to argue with the numbers. Blu-ray sales are up 700 percent since the mid-November launch of the PlayStation 3 and other Blu-ray players from Sony, Panasonic and Philips. According to a recent survey by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) of over 10,000 PS3 owners, 80 percent indicated they will buy Blu-ray movies and 75 percent said they use the PS3 as a primary device for viewing movies. However, this shouldn't come as such a big surprise as those that have bought the PS3 might as well take advantage of the Blu-ray playback capability, which still is the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market at just $499.
The content advantage that Blu-ray enjoys is another major factor that should become more and more evident now that the Blu-ray exclusive studios (Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) are starting to release more titles in the format. When looking at the 20 top selling DVDs of 2006 almost all were released by movie studios supporting Blu-ray, which means that titles such as Pirates of the Carribean and Cars will only be available for Blu-ray. The content advantage should further shift in Blu-ray's favor as the format neutral studios (Warner, Paramount) catch up their Blu-ray release schedules with HD-DVD so that the same movies are available for both formats.
Overall the Blu-ray backers are confident that it's only a matter of time before the Blu-ray format becomes the dominant format in the US market, just as it already accounts for 96% of the market in Japan.

I assure you....Once HDTV average Price Falls in 2 Years, and there are More than 15 Million Blu-ray Drives Through the PS3...and When Spider man 3 Ships.....Watch the Sales Sky-Rocket.
Its a Matter of time....PS3 Numbers are still small,Wait Until PS3 sell Over Ten-Million and Some High Profile Movies Arrive.

Here's some unbiased comments
Blu-ray: has a higher chance of winning because they forced PS3 buyers to buy it with their PS3 and since there are no GAMES, we are forced to buy blu-ray movies... I have a 3 movie : 3 game ratio... quite sad if you ask me.
HD-DVD: Yes... we admit we would buy one, Just for GLADIATOR!!!! FKDLSKFLDA... As for the add-on to my Xbox360... 200$... hmmm... hmmm ... maybe if I save up the money, but it's not really something that most people will be wishing for, ... HD-DVD... or 3-4 more games(not the option with PS3... Bluray... or ...there are no games ; ;
As for the dual-playing... lol on the other side I read "What would happen if you played a Total HD in a dual format player? It would open pandora's box, end the space time continum(I can't spell, sorry)."
They might do well, but... I can't comment because I have no idea exactly what they're trying to due besides put both formats on one disc...but isn't that copyright infringment? Tell me if you know. . .

Another reason Blu-Ray will win is because of the studio backing. With 5 studios EXCLUSIVE (Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) to Blu-Ray, all of whom are big hitters, whereas HD-DVD has only 1 exclusive studio (Universal), which to be completely honest, hasnt released a major
blockbuster since King Kong. Sure they have Inside Man, and a couple others, but they haven't been doing as well lately. Plus, during the CES (Consumer Electronc Show), Blu-Ray announced a ton of titles:

Now think about one thing - how many kids watch disney movies.... disney is pushing blu ray....
fact is - a lot of people will buy ps3 for a bluray and game player ... a lot of people who have ps3s will buy blu ray movies instead of hd-dvd because they already own the player....
So you can call people fan boys, you can praise hd-dvd - sure, it's a great medium and everything ... I'm not saying "oh look $ony is beat m$ hahaha loserz" ... I am simply saying look at the facts ....
Also - beta tapes sold some machines in the beginning too - I *****ing bought one (my mistake but they were better hands down but wasn't pushed enough) ....
Just wait for the damn numbers of how many hd-dvd movies are sold vs. blu ray.... don't look at numbers with the ps3 included or no included - they are false numbers, both ways.

How many people do you know who have a ps3 plan on spending the money for a hd-dvd player? Moneybags?
