Blu Ray disk test: kids, don't try this at home |

Somebody over at the IGN Forums has done the unthinkable. He ran steel wool (gasp!) over his Talladega Nights 15 or so times. Then he washed the disk to remove the steel wool fibers, dried it, and played it. Fortunately, it still did. Whew.
We aren't really sure why anyone would scratch steel wool over Resistance: Fall of Man on purpose but this info would be indispensable for those of you who wipe all your stuff with steel wool. This can be proof of how tough the Blu ray disk is, but remember, when trying to destroy something expensive it is always good to be smart than lucky.

Okay, maybe Talladega Nights wasn't one of Will Ferrell's better movies, but goddamn...
this prove it... anybody say blu-ray get scratched easily should go to hell. blu-ray is definly got more protection the hd-dvd ever will.
Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray disks are covered in a scratch resistant coating. Blu-ray had a reputation for getting scratched easily because the original specification required a cartridge for the disk. However, with the developement of scratch resistant coatings, Blu-ray nolonger needed a cartridge to protect the disk.
Everyone posting on those IGN boards look like a titanic dumbass.
Pretty much every Will Ferrell movie sucks anyway. I hope he picks other WF blu-ray disks to attempt to distroy in the future.
That sink is fudgin NASTY! Someone needs to take that time used to destroying blu-ray discs to cleaning up his sink.
It may still work... that is true... but I bet the player they are using is less than 6 months old. I also bet you that if he left that disc in direct sunlight for 3-4 hours and put it directly into a player and then played the movie for 3 times that it would warp enough that it wouldn't play anymore...
Because Talladega Nights was free I bet...

HD DVD specification doesnt require the special coating while Blu-ray does. Alot of HD DVD movies are just as prone to scratches as the regular DVDs because with the thicker space between the the surface and the data, they dont believe its necessary. Also the special coating would rise the cost of HD DVD to be just as much as Blu-ray.
i think the sink would look alot cleaner if the steel wool he rubbed off over the sink wasn't there thats probably why it looks so dirty
So that's a good thing right? It helps keep the cost down for HD-DVD disks and it's no worse than DVDs for scratches.

Its called a "test", look it up.
I own both an HD-DVD player (Toshiba's latest, HD-A2, mass-market machine) and a Blu-Ray (PS3). While I'm not looking to prove the "steel wool theory" for myself (even though Talledega Nights so rightly deserves it), I CAN tell you that HD-DVD is certainly very susceptible to the slightest blip on the surface. Recently, I bought Chronicles of Rid*****. The disc had come off from the case-spindle in transit. I played it until the scene where Rid***** goes to New Mecca. Then, suddenly, MASSIVE skipping and MPEG blocking and distortion, to the point where it finally froze. I had to pop it out. Luckily, I was able to polish off the light scratch with a cloth, and that corrected the problem. However, if the "steel wool test" is not a hoax, this means that BluRay has FAR BETTER error correction handling. Whether or not the HD-DVD disc had hard coat (allowing me to clear off the scratch) is somewhat immaterial, considering that it would have been TOAST had I not been able to clear the scratch, because the player certainly had no way of correcting for it.
Here we go again I OWN BOTH THE HD_DVD and yes properly a 360 BUT ETC ETC ETC and guess which machine he wants to slag off ????,why do you even bother ????. Go tell it to the film buffs because gamers have already chosen their format.

Maby the blu-ray does work but if the cd falls on the sink IT WILL NOT WORK because its so nasty the hair in it will destroy the cd LOL
But he made the scratches in the direction that doesn't bother the laser as much. He should have ran the wool around the disc in a circular motion, that disrupts the laser alot more.....still impressive if it works with absolutely no hiccups...

Since you say it skips on a spec of dust yet you later say you have to polish out a light scratch, I'd say you are full of sh*t. Only a wealthy dumb ass buys both blu ray and HD-DVD players anyway.
Would be interesting to know if the whole movie still played, we really on see 5 seconds of it. I've never had problems with scratched disc myself except for when hiring games or movies from a video store. I usually ask them to buff the disc if it looks bad. I know one thing, the Blu-Ray pirates are still going to say they need to backup the discs in case they get scratched. I wonder if HD DVD will ever take note and add the extra protective layer (if not already present) to their discs. It's not like it would be very hard for them to add.
