Blu-Ray Discs Ship

Blu-ray, the popular new disc technology that utilizes data layering and precise new disc reading lasers, has been shipped into stores today by TDK. The discs were shipped in rewriteable and recordable versions with two sizes: One layer 25 GB or two layer 50 GB. The prices range from $20-$60 dollars per disc, a price that is only for the serious disc jockey. TDK has also begun developing a quad-layer 100 GB disc that will break the bank even more.

Big plans are in the works for Blu-Ray. Not only will these discs be avaliable for computer burning, but DVDs, CDs, and even PS3 games will feature this technology. Already popular tiles such as The Matrix have plans to come out on this new media in late May.

In order for these discs to even function, users must update their hardware by purchasing a new Blu-Ray disc burner, DVD player, CD player, or game console. This is due to the fact that red disc reading lasers will be incapable of reading such tightly packed data on disks. New hardware features a blue laser that is more accurate and able to read such data.

Stay tuned for more news about the Blu-Ray revolution.

# Why so much?hush404 2006-04-13 16:47
I know that BR is new tech... but are the discs really worth that much? It's not like it's a whole new medium (like it was from VHS to DVD) we're still dealing with a disc... why $20-$60 when I can go grab a DVDR for like 50 cents?

# time for Tera-Byte HDDGuest 2006-04-13 17:30
Its time for companies to start releasing affordable consumer Tera-Byte HDD which is equivilent to 1,000GB to keep up w/ the latest media.

With Cd media that alredy can surpass 100gb and the 300GB VHD disk, it would only seem like a logical step to increas our mediocre sized hard drives which are even smaller than the disk mediums created.

I think it's reasonable as the 50gig is larger than my HD, which also goes along with what the next guy after you said. And while the disk is not a "new" medium, the player is. So the price is respectible. As time goes it will get cheaper.

Prices like this happened with CDs and DvDs when they were first released. Given a few years they will be costing you $1 a disc or less.

Of course before anybody mentions that games for the PS3 are obviously going to cost a lot due to the cost of these discs you need to remember that these prices are the consumer prices, commercial companies releasing games on BDR will be getting them at a MUCH cheaper price.
