Format Wars - Image 1

Manipulation of numbers? That's what the Blu-ray Disc Association is saying after the HD DVD Promotion Group posted their numbers about the attach rate of HD movies on HD DVD: that consumers buy 3.8 HD DVD movies compared to only 0.8 Blu-ray movies for each Blu-ray player.

However, Frank Simonis, the chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association, say that HD DVD's report was a gross misrepresentation of data. "The HD DVD Group have manipulated the GfK data and you can see this because they did not even supply access to the original source of their numbers," Simonis claimed. The GfK outfit that was mentioned in Simonis' claim is the research company that processed the data that the HD DVD used on their attach rate report.

The Blu-ray Association still stands by their data that their Blu-ray player outsells HD DVD by 2 to 1. "Honest to God, the Blu-ray Disc Association would never do this (manipulation of numbers). We've seen so much rubbish come from the HD DVD Group it's unbelievable," Simonis said.

Too be honest i think that the bluray association may of at some time manipulated it's numbers, but not as blatant and insulting as what the hd dvd group reportly do!

No, because if you have the top numbers you do not need to talk bull$it to the uninformed consumer...

when they talk about household penetration the HDDVD group is insistent that the PS3 should not be included since the machine is for gaming and even coming up with crap data such as 70% of PS3 owners not knowing about the PS3's Blu Ray player capabilities.

but now they want to talk about attach rate and they want included the PS3... how convenient.

you can't have it both ways guys.

bottom line is your getting outsold in all regions bigtime.

damn Paramount...

...If PS3 sales pick up but HD-DVD player sales increase as well, what will happen? Like if in 3 or 4 years there's around 50 million PS3s sold but everybody owns HD-DVD players and they were the clear-cut winner of the console war, will there be any movies at all for Blu-ray? Will maybe like movies by Sony Pictures be released on Blu-ray and HD-DVD or something? I also saw something a little while ago on how if you have a Blu-ray burner on your computer, you can get HD-DVDs and burn them to Blu-ray, so really all of the Blu-ray owners have nothing to worry about. The only problem is that if Blu-ray does end up being a dead brand and I have to resort to getting HD-DVDs and burning them to Blu-ray, it might be hard and expensive to find writable Blu-ray disks. Just buying an HD-DVD player might be less expensive by then.

# I don't understand why people buy HD-DVD players :Splaton 2007-11-13 17:28
?? It's useless to pay for 15 gig when you can pay the same or even less(p3) for 23 gig. :S (per layer)

anyway, I'm a ps3 owner, and I'll buy BDs and NOT hd-dvds, guess why? Because I have a BD player! lol. They are so stupid.

# PS3 is a Blu-Ray playerSikWitThiz 2007-11-14 03:39
I agree. The PS3 is a blu-ray player whether they want to agree or not. You cant add blu-ray to any player so to ignore it like its not is stupid.

HDDVD group comes into my home and penetrates me!

nasty devils...

anyways, the ps3 is really helping with blu-ray built in and m$ was smart not building it in. they said it was because if they lost the format war, the people didn't pay for something that wasn't needed.

I'm just curious, according to the numbers Blue Ray players are beating HD DVD 5 to 1 (Including PS3), but Blue Ray Movie sales are beating HD DVD by 2 to 1. Could HD DVD really "manipulate" the numbers that much?

Because if the Blue Ray players are dominating the market by that much, the HD DVD movie to player ratio is MUCH higher than that of Blue Ray. It's no doubt that both "formats" are inflating their numbers, that's just common business these days to "trick" consumers into buying their stuff. If we assume (this is just an estimate) that HD DVD is doubling their movie sales (very high escalation), we can divide by 2 to get a better estimate of the HD DVD attach rate (3.8/2 = 1.9). Even 1.9 is still higher than 0.8.

To be honest, it is no doubt that Blue Ray has more players on the market, but I think it is foolish to believe that they also have a higher attach rate than HD DVD given this information. The PS3 definitely brings more players into the market, but many of the consumers buy this for it’s gaming capabilities, while the HD DVD consumer buys his HD DVD player for movies.

Nobody is going to lose like the Betamax and VHS war. Since both formats use the same video formats (VC-1, AVC, mpeg2), there are tools out there that can turn your HD DVD movie collection into Blue Ray and vice versa. So if one side actually wins (But it is looking like a stalemate as of now), your movies are not dead, just burn them to the winning format. I wouldn't worry so much about burner prices, look at how quickly DVD burners dropped in price.

Attach rate? Does that honestly apply here?

1. The average person RENTS movies.

2. Since there is a unit that does MUCH MORE then play movies (PS3) the attach rate is bogus information. The PS3 is counted as a BR player however not 100% of those sales are used for movies. So any attach rate derived for BR is worthless information.

Once again the HD-DVD camp feels the need to lie.

Why do anyone who tries to stick up for the hd dvd format always mention attach rates? Come on, the only time I heard of attachment rates is when the HDdvd group had to ( Reportly ) manipulate numbers in the past in it's format's favor. ( excuses, excuses and delusional ones at that )

I wouldn't jump the gun on that one, attach rates isn't something that is just used by HD DVD. Everybody is making a big deal about the gaming attach rates concerning the XBOX 360, PS3, and Wii. XBOX360 has sold less consoles than the Wii, but the XBOX360 has a higher gaming attach rate.

Does this mean that the Wii is going to dominate over the other 2 consoles? Maybe not, because the XBOX and PS3 have higher gaming attach rates. Remember this, movies and games are the real money makers. The profit does not necessarily come from the players/consoles themselves.

Just based on attach rates (even if they are inflated), HD DVD isn't down yet. Also never underrestimate HD DVDs cult following.
