Does this mean the format wars are over? Well, for Blockbuster, it seems just that. Associated Press just released a statement that Blockbuster will exclusively carry high-def discs in Blu-ray format in 1,450 of their stores. This decision came from an analysis done in 250 branches where they carried both Blu-ray and HD-DVDs. It was found that more than 70% of the consumers rented out Blu-ray discs over HD-DVD. Blockbuster senior VP of merchandising had this to say:
The consumers are sending us a message. [...] I can't ignore what I'm seeing. When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that [more studios are releasing films in Blu-ray].
True enough, most major studios are supporting the Blu-ray. Another factor, of course, would be the release of the PlayStation 3, which gave the Blu-ray format a big push in sales. It's now believed that Blockbuster's decision could be the first step in shifting the balance and will allow other retailers to follow suit.
The North American HD-DVD Promotional Group, however, sees Blockbuster's decision as unfounded. Ken Graffeo thinks that basing their move on the Blu-ray flims' success over the first three months of the year was too short-sighted.
Despite it all, Blockbuster will still keep renting out HD-DVDs in their original 250 locations and online. But as it stands, that's 1,450 stores with exclusive Blu-ray, and 250 offering Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Now do the math.

Back shortly after DVD had the hit market Blockbuster was going to support the now what seems like the long ago failed DIVX (Digital Video Express) format. People were up in arms about that joke of a format. I know this is different, but that was a bad thing and I won't ever tip my hat to Circut City or anyone else who, like Blockbuster was going to support it. Blockbuster can take a s***** and eat my ___. In light of their choice for Blu-Ray it can be only a good thing. I still hate Blockbuster.

I couldn't give a rat's ass about what blockbastard thinks, because I stopped renting from them after they charged me a $6 late fee for one night late and turned it over to a collection agency. Seems like a pro blu ray company to me.
But really, good for you. Now you are guaranteed to be able to rent blu ray movies and play them on your "game console" and then when you forget to return them you can pay some ridiculous late fees you can convieniently pay to a collection agency with no effort on your part. Blu-Ray has to do with videogames too. It's used to play games on PS3 currently (no disc space problems like with Xbox 360. For example the Team Ninja director said to IGN that "as usual we couldn't put in everything we wanted due to disc space limitations")

Sony have used used the PS3 as a device to get Blu-ray as the main next generation format, thus securing them about 5 years as the main supplier of media. They used US, the gamers, as the cost to do so.

no HD-DVD would be the laser disk of this generation. it will forever sit on you stereo of shame of wasted money. if only they could make HD-DVDs about a foot longer in diameter it would be perfect. this is really good news for the blue ray format that sony created. and since the ps3 is the cheapest blue ray player to date (as well as a very powerful gaming system, photo viewer, mp3 player, internet browser etc.) people will buy it as their BD player. HD-DVD just keeps losing more and more support by the day. Its no wonder blockbuster chose Blu-ray. Its supported by way more movie studios than HD-DVD. It also helps that the PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player you can buy. I didnt actually see blu ray winning but its becoming more and more clear what the outcome is going to be.

I am selling a PS3 I am very unhappy with. I have no desire to fold protien, play 3 year old half assed ports, use worthless linux, or buy $30 movies I watch once. I got drunk one night and woke up next to a PS3 and a credit card receipt. I bought it at best buy, the biggest ass hole store in the world so I can't return it. I will sell it for any reasonable offer. Since it's useless, $100 is reasonable.
Used the ps3 as a device... Every console has a format but because Sony chose to put a new format (blu-ray) there using people lol. The format was put into the ps3 for its games. Sony could have easily switched there products to HD-DVD.

Microsoft is trying to push the DVD format. I already have 5 DVD players including my PC so Microsoft isn't concentrating on watching movies using DVDs, they are concentrating on the games. Sony needs Blu-ray to win thats why the PS3 costs so much.
They draged it with Killzone 2, Mgs4, Warhawk, Final fantasy, Lair, Heavenly sword and all the other games im missing. 360 fanboys aren't accepting that the PS3 is a MULTIMEDIA system, PS3 users get good games along with movies, music, videos, and free online... The PS3 (unlike 360) lets you do way more than just play games.

What games does the 360 have? A bunch of average games, at best. What you got coming up, more average games. I'll be playing MGS4, Warhawk, maybe killzone watching blu-ray discs, and playing all the decent games you get 'cause they'll be out on both, except the awesomely average Halo 3, from the clips I've seen I'd rather have WarHawk.

MS is concentrating on the PC. the Xbox is a defense cuz MS thought playstation was gonna take some of the PC sales away and become a multimedia center without MS Windows.
MS would rather have you download media instead of having you store it on a disc. That would keep people using the PC AND using windows.
WiiCool, we did let the best win. And, of course it matters, when there is superior-quality equipment you've invested in. Lack of vocal support would mean that the best could fail, and be replaced by something technologically inferior... like, perhaps, a Wii.
nowhere in that article does it say that block buster supported divx. it did say that Hollywood video did.

You can read, but you did read it correctly. No Hollywood Video was not in support of DIVX re-read that page... No, it wasn't in that article, but Blockbuster was going to support DIVX. This was something that I had remembered. The article was for people who might not know what DIVX was. I did not use the link as a ref. but as a side note otherwise I would have used a footnote in my comment.
all you losers who say, "i bought my console to play games not watch movies" imagine if you acctually could buy a awesome gaming console which could play DVD's and the Blu Ray as well as playing games? its called a PS3 and its reaonably priced for what it packs, if you buy all the things that "add-on" (lol so lame, add ons) to your 360 i,e a wireless controller, a wifi adapter, HDDVD player, charge-able battery add-on for controller, intercooler so your 360 dosent die and then pay for xbox live so you can acctually play most your games i think it will cost more then a PS3 which has all this off the shelf, so who's the loser now?

Y'all are consumers. Businesses have influenced you everyday of your life. Why you take exception to Sony or MS doing it is beyond me. It's not like BR is hella expensive... it gets cheaper every week. it's not like HD-DVD is crap- it just has no support- except Universal and they will be jumping ship soon.
In the next year or two all y'all are going to have HDTVs and a BR player. I don't understand this resistance. If the idea of having a BR player rolled into game console is that unbearable for you- buy something else. Just remember that you will have to buy a BR a year down the road anyways.

The Blu-ray disc is much better than HD-DVD discs. The blu-ray disc has much more storage capacity and just face it, Blu-ray disc sounds so much better than HD-DVD disc.
I own both. Big deal, poor people.
I'm hoping for a Mac with a blu-ray drive, it doesn't have to have a writer, but just a Superdrive with an extra blu-ray reader added. I can actually see that happening in the next year or two because blu-ray just keeps getting cheaper, and Apple supports blu-ray. (As well as Sony TV's) Don't believe me? Take a look at the TV's they use for the AppleTV's. One thing that I am also looking forward to is "The Matrix Trilogy" for blu-ray. HD-DVD really scored big with that release. (in my opinion)
BluRay keeps up this momentum and we may yet see that price cut for the PS3 and games. Good news indeed!

I'm still waiting for microsoft to start charging for free game demos... lol... Yeah sony might have used gamers to help blue-ray sales but in the long run they did use a favor cause now we should have a format of disk that won't be depleted over the next few months or years. Thats why Microsoft was unsure of putting an HD-DVD drive as its main disk drive cause they themselves didn't have a strong beleif in it. The Xbox 360 is a great machine but I just Can't understand why the brand new 360 Elite is already flashing 3RL's and I've kept my PS3 running for 2 weeks non-stop and hasn't even failed me once except for the stupid blue-tooth controllers. Oh I didn't forget about the Wii... I love it its great... but thats also coming from the guy who thought the best system last gen was Gamecube lol.
Just wait and see cause Dremcast 2 is gonna whip everyones a$$ cause it gonna be the next-next gen gaming system that will have 20 gagillion bit processor, with high-def broadband connections, with 5 TB of starage for all your porn, it will actually suck your ***** and do you dishes, it will have HdoubleD- BlueVD (times 3 i might add) disc player, and will be powered by a miniture Cell... from dragon ball z himself. All games can be downloaded but who the frik cares cause one games will take up 4TB of storage. They'll create a super awsum machine machine but will fail to heat, motion sensor, and lack of library of games...

The 3D0 sold over 6 million systems in 2 years. It was a failure. Ironically, the Sony Playstation 1 helped make it a failure. Also ironically, the high price point of $600 was the reason it's sales didn't meet expectations. Even more ironically, a low game selection was a main contributor to its demise.

There's going to be a lot of format wars from now on since you always give sony the thumbs up every time they want to make exclusive profits off all new media unlike with DVD. Looks like DVD will be the last time there was an agreement between companies to produce a single movie and media format so consumers and companies can benefit. Blu ray deserves to lose simply because sony is the reason there is a format war. That's all I'm advocating. Sony's greed is the reason consumers are getting screwed. Sony even admitted DVD was too cheap and that's the reason they invented their new format, and they were unhappy with their share of DVD profits so they came up with blu ray and did not seek approval of the DVD forum.

How many really good games does 360 currently have? Honestly theres only a handful, so why is that everytime i visit one of these sites i see 360 fanboys preaching about the "amazing 360 games". Theres only GoW, Forza, Oblivion, Vegas, Graw, Graw2, Condemned, anything else really? Not that i can think of... PS3 only has Resistance, Motorstorm, Oblivion, and soon to be Darkness (which i think is a multiplatform title) and Vegas. But with a years headstart you would think 360 would have more good games, but it seems like thats not true at all despite what 360 fanboys claim. One good game doesnt make a console worth its cost.
the fact that the movies look just about the same is the reason the extra space makes blu-ray the winner. Movies studios need more space so they can put in more extras and charge you more money. I'm good with blu-ray the hd-dvd people are in the way of progress. But that is M$ for ya, have people not buy a truely next-gen product in favor of your half-a$$ almost next-gen product. Look at the 360 and look at hd-dvd. They both just missed being truely next-gen. THat's because M$ won't sell you anything you won't have to upgrqade in four years, it goes against everything they believe in.

and as soon as a game look better on the 360 they say that developers still havent tapped the piss s 3's potential. well look at the games. if they look the same the ps3 version will have frame rate problems. thats why the 360 versions always look better. the developers have to lower the games graphics in order to make the ps3 version run smooth. face it the ps3 is MAXED OUT! there is NOTHING more a developer can do to make it better!

3DO just didn't have any good games at all. Don't give me any history lesson by the way. The PS1 when first released was a 300$ system which due too major inflation would almost be equal to around 600$ today. I'm an employe at Gamestop and I know price has very little to do with sales of a game system. People are waiting for more games because it is lacking in that catagory. But many games are soon to be released for the PS3 and right now we have more reserves for the PS3 than the 360 games times three. Also at the rate of 6 months and still to be released in other countrys the number of three million will become at least quadruple in two years time. Thats if it sells so poorly as people say. I'm just giving cold hard facts here... If i'm wrong in the future you free to say you were wrong dumba$$. And the games that are out are good games such as resistance fall of man, ridge racer 7, the transfer of Oblivion, virtual fighter 5, Motostorm, and the great downloadable fun games. I'm from Saudi Arabia - part of the Middle-east, if anyone didn't know...anyway, from what I have seen, HD-DVDs haven't even been brought to the Mid-East, and many other parts of Europe...We have a population of +27million in KSA alone, and we've all been busy getting ready to support Blu-rays since last year...
I really don't think this is something all of you fanboys should be fighing about - the fact is, Blu-ray just seems more practical to us all, considering the Higher Capacity disk format, and the higher picture quality.
I already have 35 BD movies, let alone 10 PS3 titles...
Not one of them has any of these rumored "rots" on any of them...and I keep my discs in the open!
So all of you, please chill out.
If Blu-ray wins, and it probably will, it's for the better.
Two different formats is sucha hassle...
