The Sunforce 44444The Air-X

This is the environmentally-sound way to power all those gadgets, laptops, and PDAs without generating any noxious pollution - or at least provide backup power when the mains go out. These two wind-powered turbine generators, featured at Treehugger, will deliver a DC current, usually to charge a bank of batteries to serve as an emergency power source, and to power or charge cell phones and laptops, and DC-powered lights, refrigerators, and other equipment.

The Sunforce can be bought off Amazon for $800. It delivers a 12 volt, up to 400 watt current and is advertised as "ideal for cottages, 12v battery charging, remote power, back-up power and hobbyists." Its carbon-composite blades whip relatively quietly in the wind, and it is designed for easy installation and maintenance. An automatic regulator cuts off the generator when it detects that the batteries are fully charged, to reduce wear on those power cells.

The Air-X, operates very similarly, although it's available for a lower price of around $550-$650 dollars depending on the model. Thecarbon-fiber blades of the rotor spans 46 inches, and its attached generator will deliver from 12 to 48 volts DC current, also up to 400 watts depending on wind speed. It will also cut the charge off when its microprocessors detect that the batteries are full.

These two devices, like the solar-paneled briefcase we featured earlier, are perfect for powering small electronic devices through Nature's generous bounty. They don't pollute like traditional power sources, and they're guaranteed not to blow up, unlike, er, laptop batteries. Of course, you'll need to be in a place with good, steady winds to make this cost-effective.
