Attack of the Killer Product Packaging!

handhurtHow many times have you fought and struggled with the too tough to open product packaging that was audaciously keeping you from having access to your brand new gadget? Too many times for my taste would be my answer! When I recently purchased a 2GB memory stick pro duo, as many of you already know, the outer bubble was so tough to get into I nearly broke the actual memory stick while I was violently struggling to get it out of the package.

The stubborn plastic casing, that is designed to protect XBOX 360 faceplates from theft, has claimed yet another young victim (see photo left). The fact that the faceplate only costs about 20 bucks retail adds irony to the injuries that this particular gamer has suffered because of his decision to buy a new 360 faceplate. Retailers are the reason that manufacturers are continuing to make their packaging more and more impenetrable.

The retailers, fearing theft, are demanding more from manufacturers in the way of theft deterrent packaging and manufacturers are responding by creating more devious ways of keeping people out of their product packages. While the tone of this discussion has remained light and humorous, the fact is, many emergency rooms have been reporting major increases in hand injuries around gift giving season, and this is no joke! Consumers, doctors and retailers agree that this is becoming a problem, but they disagree about the solution. Many consumers would do away with the theft repelling packaging all together.

While retailers and manufacturers bristle at the thought of eliminating hardened packaging as an option. All it would take is one child bleeding to death because of this silliness and the debate would come to an immediate end. Lets hope it doesn't come to that. Unfortunately corporations commonly refuse to listen to consumer complaints and tend to only respond after some tragic event has forced their hand.

I build computers for a living, and I have to open this sort of packaging on a regular basis. I recommend using a pair of sheetmetal cutters. I am not joking. Sharp scissors work, but that plastic is still strong. I use sheetmetal cutters to cut the outer "seam" edge off, then the whole thing opens easily. This is the easiest and safest way to open this type of package, that I have found.

Isn't this sort of packaging pretty expensive to manufacture too? What a waste of money.

You're supposed to cut that sh*t dumba$$, it's your own fault.

The plastic is not tough at all, the plastic encasing 360 faceplates is some of the weakest I've come across.

Sorry to hear about another victim to the most horrible packaging idea ever created (you buy something... you're supposed to be able to get it OUT and USE it).

I'm 32 years old...and not an idiot around a pair of scissors. Still...one mistake with a pair of the new near-impenetrable plastic packaging (it was headphones this time), and I've got a beauty of a scar running down the centre (bottom side) of my middle finger.

That stuff split my finger in two down to the bone. I hate hospitals, so I squeezed my finger together tight and wrapped an abundance of bandaids around it. Thankfully, without stitches (all those first aid courses paid off!) my finger is back to normal. Except for that 3 inch long scar.

Whoever made that packaging... I'd like to show 'em my middle finger. Pun TOTALLY intended.

I hate these packaging! They will really cut you up if you're not careful. And no, scissors don't work 100%. If you use a brand new scissors it will cut easily but you'll injure yourself if you're not careful. Sometimes I used dishwasher gloves to protect myself. Retailers are morons. Most electronics now adays comes with these packaging including all Xbox360 accessories. We can make advances in technology but look how it delivers to consumer. Injury insults. I detest idiots that design the packaging. We should all sue them.

If people wouldnt steal things then retailers selling the product wouldnt be asking for better packaging. Just my 2 cents :)

Yeah, anyone with half a brain knows that this packaging is a pain in the ass....sure if can be opened easly, with *****ing tin cutters and 10 minutes of your time.

If you dispue that this packaging is more convenient then a cardboard box, then you are the moron...

It's really not that hard at all to open, you're just not doing it right. I have some scissors from the dollar store and I open these up in 1 minute. Sure, they are less convienent than a cardboard box, but 10 minutes of your time to open them, with tin cutters? Not unless you are mentally challenged.

I have bought market place points (7), face-plates (2), play and charge kits (2), quick charge kit, and various other accessories. Never have I cut myself on plastic. Just use a box cutter ($ 0.99). You would think Microsoft wants to kill you before taking all your money with everyone screaming bloody murder.
