Wii WiFi to be Similar to DS

Those holding out that Nintendo's online service for Wii would be similar to Xbox Live and not the DS' version of Nintendo WiFi Connection might want to start to worry. IGN had an interview in which they found out that the DS model is the one being considered for the Wii.

What is your plan for the Wi-Fi Connection and how might it compare to Xbox Live?

Takahashi Tezuka: Well, the Wii Wi-Fi Connection works the same as the Nintendo DS one. It's the three qualities that we emphasize. It's easy, safe and free.

Will it have a central interface a la Live that all games will interact with, or will it be different on a game-by-game basis?

Tezuka: It'll be just like the DS so the interface will depend on the software.

Will Wi-Fi Connection on Wii also use a Friends Code system?

Tezuka: Yes.

However, they will still need to have some type of interface so that you can access the Virtual Console. Also, different games might still have rooms to set up like you can with your friends in Metroid Prime Hunters. Hopefully Super Smash Bros. Brawl won't have a limited online service. I'd really like to see it flourish. I don't mind friend codes, but I'm really not a fan of randomly connecting to players with no central hub - even if it's exclusive to that one game.

What the heck! Freind codes again! That totally stinks. Why can Nintendo realize that people want to play with people from around the world and not just their freinds that they have to get their buddy codes from. I mean seriously. I want to challenge people outside my friends and challenge people from around the world!
