Nintendo laughs last on Sony's PS3 announcement |

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," said a Nintendo spokesperson to CNN Money.com's correspondent. Indeed, PS3's announcement with regards to their exclusive controller is something to laugh at. The two exclusive controllers look exactly the same but is said to be entirely different. Sony tries to explain that the new controller "is of industry standard." Consoles can come up with the same thing because it's already a given. It's almost saying that nobody owns the rectangle shaped controller and anybody can use the same idea. On one hand, Sony is right, however, could this be a sign of lack of creativity on Sony's end or it could be as complex as corporate espionage. As E3 dawns another day, we can only wonder if the Xbox360 too will have something like the Wii Mote. More than the controllers, in the end, the question is the prices. With the prices of the Xbox360 and Playstation 3 at $400 to $500, maybe Nintendo will have something up their sleeves if they do announce that their console would only cost the rumored $250. I guess the best option for most of us is to wait for Nintendo's announcement in a few hours. Maybe they might have the last laugh.

Aren't we forgetting about the eye toy. With cell's capabilities, it can perform much better, able to detect people's movements. eg http://airguitar.tml.hut.fi/
this is what they can just do with the eye toy.
Also look at those crazy people on hollywood movies, they will tilt their controller madly, and often can make it more intresting to play.
Nintendo haven't done this now, they have done it in the past, remember the glove and there have been products that use 3d caputuring techniques.
Nintendo are just worried...

This was a great move by sony. IGN reports that the new controller feels amazing while playing Warhawk. Also they have improve more than that.
Truly a solid performance from Sony. Now its up to Nin and MS to lose or win this thing. But Sony has set a high bar.

I've got more creativity in my right index finger than Sony does in their entire Playstation division. Sony is going down! and Nintendo gets the last laugh!

But owning a xbox360 and i really don't like the controller, sure it's better than the first one but still nowhere close to the Playstation's one.

Same thing with them showing GT1 and GT4 beside the GTHD. Doesn't seem that special until you see how sucky it could be.
Honestly, the only thing from the Sony show that impressed me was Heavenly Sword. That game looks pretty good and looks like it will have fun gameplay.
That EyeToy card game had promise...but still seemed a little glitchy to me.

The 499 is actually pretty good. But if you want the best that PS3 can throw at you the 599 is a no brainer. I love technology and just bought a plasma TV and I cant wait until my PS3 arrives this christmas. Heavenly Sword looks so heavenly!

HardDrive swap
HDMI output addon
External Memory reader
Dont understand what you mean? Why do you think the PS3 has so many USB and other connectors. Thats right add-ons

After that a judge ruled that Sony had to discontinue selling anything that used the "dual shock" layout, and also there were some games they had to stop selling too (not sure why on that, the article never said) but Sony managed to suck some d*cks and get that overruled.
So that is the real reason they are trying to find a new controller scheme, that arguement that you can't patent or copyright a controller is what they used against M$ but the thing is if you can patent a design on a cpu, memory, muffler or any component of any machine (which you can) you can copyright the design on a controller....which I think nintendo should have done, or should do.....or course it may be patent pending, they can take awhile.......
Otherwise they would have just stuck to the same old design, maybe spiffing it up abit...

Seriously, it's a big purchase. I plan on getting a PS3 like I said a year ago, but I will almost definately want to pre-order it and pay a little every month. What happens after launch and you can't pre-order?
That's going to be a lot of kid's ONLY christmas present.

So it's not a bad price, especially considering that it has 60gb HDD, bluray, HDMI, Wifi, 1gbit ethernet, 4xusb, bluetooth, memcard readers, and so on. Sounds like pretty good value already, but at the same time we all know that the prices will go down soon enough.
In the launch period, not nearly all the, say, 50.000.000 PS2 owners (let's for the sake of it assume half of these systems died and went to console heaven) can upgrade to the PS3. By late March, only about 6.000.000 of them can have upgraded. So until that time, the system will continue to be expensive, and still continue to be sold. When 10.000.000 have been sold (I'm guessing after about half a year, max), prices will go down, I'm fairly sure.
But the Wii, now that system will probably be rather cheap, and it will be interesting to see how well that will sell. I'm predicting that initially it will sell fairly strong, lots of kids getting that one.
Xbox 360 has the advantage of early launch. But soon enough, the 360 is going to look a bit bland against the other systems, which will have these motion sensitivity innovations. I'm betting they will be pretty successful, and Xbox will either come with a new controller with new features, or become really, really cheap, in order to survive. Like the DS and the PSP, the Wii and PS3 will never really be in much competition - maybe in the minds of fanboys, but in reality they'll have different segments of the market and little to fear of each other. They'll each do fine, and will each expand the market yet again.

PS3 core is 500 while ps3 premium is 600 bucks.
600 bucks is a cheap price. Which Blu-ray standalone players costing 1000+ I estimated 500-800 bucks for the console. 600 bucks is easy for me and i have no problem with it.

i love the fact that you see that its not cg this year and the games dont look as awsome as they did last year!
oh ya if the rumors are true that they will do a price drop when the ps3 comes out i think that Wii and 360 are going to run over PS3 on price alone. and i want to get a ps3 i'm going to wait till price drops, and this is someone that has a psp ps2 ps1 and a hd tv to play the ps3 on, i guesse my 360 is getting more attention this year than i planned, but im already making space for my Wii (i luv mario, he makes me feel gooey inside)
oh and a final not HALO 3, i dont care how many fanboys cry halo 2 is still #1 on live and almoast 2years old!
so stop saying that they have more games that are sony only because the lost grand theft auto. wich ms will get a live feature, that sony wont. i guess that sony not looking so good to developers as it did.

Even the cheapest (crippled) version of the PS3 is $100 more expensive than the premium xbox.
From the screenshots we've seen (the ones that have been release recently) it really doesnt look like its even worth the extra $200 as I dont see it really offering much over what the xbox360 is doing, and well its got nothing on the revolution/wii.

Nintendo has said many times that they aren't trying to make you buy Wii instead of the other consoles. They feel you'll want to have Wii in addition or the others in addition to Wii. DS has no problem that some of their fans own PSPs. Nintendo doesn't care that many people already own 360s.
Who says that you can't own more than one system? This loyalty to one system is stupid if the other ones are great, too. However, since PS3 and 360 are essentially just going for big graphics, I'll choose the stronger out of the two: PS3.
But first and foremost I want a Wii. Almost every game they mentioned I'd love to play. Can't say that with the competitors. For sony all I'd play is Heavenly Sword and FFXIII.

Ok they got the tilt function from nintendo but I think that a tilt function sounds much better then a "do- anything-by-moving-ur-controller function"
For sony to keep the dual shock controller is the best thing they could do, cuz it's perfect as it is...

That being said I will more than likely buy a PS3 and a Wii.

Six degrees of movement detection is not six degrees of tilt.
The PS3 controller detects movement along all 3 axis (x,y,z), and detects tilt along all 3 axis (a.k.a. yaw, pitch and roll), totalling 6. I think at GDC people will learn to appreciate this a little better.
And yes, the Cell processor isn't much faster than the Xenon for regular operations. But when it comes to certain types of calculations, such as fast-fourier transforms and other stuff that among others is required for encoding/decoding streams, physics calculations, and mass AI routines, the Cell can be over 100 times faster than the Xenon. This is what people talk about when they think the Cell will be able to outperform the Xbox. Compare it, if you will, with the inclusion of the Agaia PhysicsFX chip in your PC, a chip specialised in similar kind of processing, much more efficient at such calculations than your regular Intel / AMD main processor.
Finally, the latest HDMI isn't required for HD output on the PS3, it is only required for protected BluRay HD movies. This means that, eventually when nearly all TVs have HDMI interfaces, it may be possible that you won't be able to run some movies at full HD resolution because of protection schemes. But it is not even sure that will ever happen, and it is sure not to happen very soon. It certainly won't affect your ability to play a HD game on the PS3 in 1080P (as long as your TV is able to display that format).

they have done this in the past and it hasn't made much difference.
what a load of bull... , the Cell processor isn't much faster than the Xenon " it is a lot better, on floating point calculations and has a higher calculation per cycles. Plus it has much more faster memory and generally if sony marketing the fact it "RAN LINUX" out of the box and use it for a computer. People would flock to buy it...

no hdmi on the cheaper version means blu-ray movies can't be displayed in HD. You will be stuck with 480p only as a HDCP compatible HDMI slot is required for the higher resolutions in a majority of the blu-ray movie releases. This also means no 1080p for games, but you will still get 720p and 1080i using component cables.
WTG No. 43.... You're the first person I have seen that picked up on this. That's why I just put it out there w/o explaining. Fanboyism is fun, and it's funny to see people spout off w/o knowing wtf they are talking about. Heh, no one is even talking about it...
Not ALL BluRay movies will force you to downscale, but I have to believe that given the option, the movie companies will flag it, and you're SOL without HDMI.
That's why it's silly to not get the $600 version (if you do plan to get a PS3), even if you dont have an HD set, or think you won't watch HD movies....eventually that all can change....
Reply
Yes it will affect your ability since component cables dont do 1080p. No HDMI means only 1080i max resolution.
Not that that even matters...most hdtv's are still only 720p native resolution. The TV companies are still bamboozling people, making them think they are getting a 1080i or 1080p set when in reality it only supports taking the signal and then converts it to it's native resolution.

And just to make things clear PS3 is much better then 360 in the graphics department, I know because I have seen a PS3 dev and I also have a 360 (as I stated earlier) and trust me 360 isnt that good...
But back on topic I think Wii will be good for kids and such! So I hope they enjoy Kirby and Pokemon in a whole 256bits! whoa that would be good a 256bit console from ninty

Toshiba's first HDDVD player doesnt have HDMI and therefore doesnt support 1080P. 1080i is turned into 740p by most HDTVs since they are progressive by nature. So when you see 1080i be careful of mistaken it to the all amazing 1080P.
PS3 will play BDRom Movies! Even without HDMI. It will however display them at 1080i (again this = 740p for most). HDMI also includes new security features but they will depend on the movie studios including them in their movies. Since most people won't have HDTVs with hdmi inputs, in the begining movies will not have HDMI security. In the future who knows.
so to recap:
No HDMI = 740P/1080i No HDMI security support
HDTV Movies are definitely playable!

And it would be foolish to put down 600.00 (not including tax and such) on a pre order when you dont know exactly what your going to get.
Lets face it Sony is Only taking what they think works from each competitor. They have even admitted doing so in an earlier interview. They are not inovative.
Lastly, for anyone who is here trying to figure out which system is the one they should buy. I say wait!!! If you cant wait, I recomend the 360. After tooking at what all 3 systems have to offer, the 360 just does more. the specs between ps3/360 balance each other out in what it can do performance wise.
IGNORE THE FANBOYS!!
I am not a fan boy. I just want a great gaming experience and for me 360 hits the mark.
If ps3 came out and had a better gaming experience I would buy it in a heart beat.
All im saying is wait and choose carefully.
Which one truly has what you want in a Console?

But the big picture is ripping HD movies into a PC and then sharing them over the internet. I think this is where the movie studios will indeed opt to flag the disc for HD on HDMI only. Studios based their support decisions of a particular format on major factors, and piracy is a BIG ONE. This is all pure speculation, but I would find it hard to believe that the studios wouldn't take advantage of the copy protection available to them.
Computers have become more prevalant and easier to use, and everyday someone is ripping a new copy of a movie to share "illegally". That puts movie studios out some bottom line dollars, and you just don't f*** with peoples money in our captialist world.

and just incase that you dont know. there will not be an upgrade available (is what was said), for those who cant afford to pay for the blueray but want it later.
unlike ms you can buy the hd after the fact and the hddvd is if you want it you spend the extra money for it. so it looks like sony is trying to say if you dont have the money for the premium than you dont deserve having any of the goodnes that is bd. i think that in this case sony should make the non bd version $299 or $399 not $499. you realy dont get anything with you $499 plus tax theyve removed all card readers 802.11 and gigaethernet.
i mean damn compare the core and premium of the 360 and the core and premium of the ps3.
