wireless heaven...

I am more looking forward to bluray but i am glad to see that Microsoft is releasing HD-DVD... At one point they were then they weren't.... I don't wanna get into a heated discussion on whats better either... But yeah... Gotta love the wireless headset... steering wheel... and the lil windows wireless thing... gonna be sweet...

Price?

I wonder how much MS will be selling the HD-DVD player. It'll be a shame if they sell it more than $200.

hd-dvd

they should sell 360 units with built in hd-dvd players and sell the hd-dvd upgrade unit on its own for those who already have a 360.

Although highly highly speculative, I read somewhere that the HD DVD addon will be for less than $100... Since the addon will only be a simple laser and wont bundle the actual decryption parts...That'll be done on-the-fly by the 360 itself...

The HD DVD add on better be only like $100 bucks or its not worth it.

Now would i would like to know is, does the actualy HD DVD Drive have the region code or does the xbox have the region code. Pretty cool if it was the drive itself

?

"The HD DVD add on better be only like $100 bucks or its not worth it." [sarcasm] Oh yeah totaly would not be worth paying more than $100 bucks for a hd-dvd player worth $500 [/sarcasm] lol seriosly though it would be nice being 100, but I would pay more. I mean you get a gaming system and the hd-dvd addon optional. And together even $200 for the hd-dvd its cheaper than a standalone unit. I like this approach over sonys here is a console and your paying for blu ray wether you like it or not.

i knew it was coming

how did i know somebody was going to mention sony, just so predictable.

no HDMI lol

without an HDMI connection (which the 360 doesn't have one, poor planning on MS's part), HD-DVD will downsize to 480 lines, similar to BR. The question now is, why get a HD-dvd addon for the 360 when its only obvious use is to playback movies, which will be outputed to normal DVD quality anyway. I personally don't see any value in this.
by - 2006-05-10 14:13:57
lol

guys appreciate the fact that MS is doing the best deal, who gives a f*** if they dont do HDMI, go buy yourself a HDTV and live with it. dont start crying to me #12.
by - 2006-05-10 15:03:45
no HDMI lol

lol you do realise that without HDMI, HD-DVD = normal DVD. my question is, why get the HD-dvd addon when its just gonna be the same as dvd quality? waste of money if you ask me. its obvious post #13 is uninformed and a fanboy by his response. oh and buying a HDTV won't change the fact that you won't be able to view in HD with the 360 HD dvd addon.
by - 2006-05-10 16:04:47
not really

you can view hd-dvd in hi-def 480/720 without the hdmi connection but you cant view it in 1080i/p which alot of hd sets dnt have yet, well with the new hdmi 3.0
by Ezekiel_Xz - 2006-05-10 16:08:06
hmmmm

using the hi def cables that come with the 360, im pretty sure you can output to 1080i. Just like with the 360 you can ouput your videogame signal in 1080i. A hi def signal is the same wether its from a dvd or from a rendered game. HDMI isnt needed for 1080i output.
by - 2006-05-10 16:45:10
ruels

The 360 is capapble of outputing at 1080i with component cables. Furthermore, it is cappable of displaying a hd content with component cables, up to 1080i. The problem is with the HDCP, High definition content protection. This is a standard that is decided on, alot like how the DVD forum decides which format it wants. Because an analog signal is easy to copy and HD movies are perfect quality from the master, fear of pirating made movie companies decide that an output with HDCP is required to play back movies in 720/1080. I think that the HD dvd add on will have a usb connecting to xbox, and an HDMI output. ITs hte only way they can do it wihtout getting around the HDCP rules. HDMI would be nice for games too, I hope the player allows all video signals to be output through hdmi.
by kenner360 - 2006-05-10 16:53:42
yup^^rules!!

Yeah, seriously the guy above is right, i have a 32" LCD HDTV and i figured that the TV is receiving 1080 interlace, and that the xbox is sending 1080 interlace, HDMI will be the same except for progressive, which, the human eye will probably not notice unless your bionical or something, then youre jsut werid, cheers.
by - 2006-05-10 16:57:29
damnit

i just bought the joytech nitro steering wheel... i want this one instead! if it's the same price, i'll still get it
by - 2006-05-10 19:14:55
HDCP

#13 #14 & #17 (all same person?) are correct. Part of the HDCP specifications of HD-DVD and BluRay state that to output higher than 480p [prog. scan DVD quality] the connection between the player and the TV/receiver must be digital (ie. HDMI). With Xbox 360 and the base PS3 both not supporting HDMI, what possible advantage is there of next-gen DVD over current DVD when they output the exact same resolution through analog connections?
by - 2006-05-11 00:40:12
wheel

is the racing wheel like 900 degrees?? like the ps2's logitech pro for grand turismo 4 and *****. please be a 900 degree wheel!!!!!!!!!

Component video cable

"S-Video is another type of component video signal, because the luminance and chrominance signals are transmitted on separate wires. This connection type, however, cannot produce high definition or digital-quality pictures (pictures with more than 480 interlaced lines of video for NTSC or more than 576 lines of interlaced video for PAL). Component video is capable of producing signals such as 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, but digital connections such as DVI (video only) and HDMI (which can also include up to 8 channels of audio) give better results at the higher resolutions (up to 1080p)." - Wikipedia Well, From what this says, HDMI will only benefit you if you're capable of running 1080p. Are you?
by - 2006-05-11 05:25:19
fact

no, that is incorrect, HDMI connection with a HDMI compatible TV will allow you to view movies above 480p. With component, HD-dvd output will only be outputed at a restricted 480p when playing movies even though it can technically output higher. therefore, because the 360 HD-dvd addon does not have HDMI, it can only output at 480p max, making it equivalent to normal DVD quality. So basically, you are buying an addon to view movies in dvd quality. On the othe hand, this is different when playing games because games do not have such a restriction on non HDMI connections which is the reason you can play in 720p and 1080i. (360 doesn't output to 1080p afaik).

wireless

i like the idea of being able to link up the pad head set and wheel to windows that'll be great, but IMO steering wheels are the worst gaming controllers ever
by - 2006-05-11 07:25:11
HDMI

Have any of you geniuses figured out that HDMI will be on the addon drive yet. Quite easy if you do your research, so yes 360 will have HDMI on the addon drive. Take that $500 PS3 . You also know the $500 PS3 doesnt have HDMI, and no plan to let you addon to it, you'll just need to go buy the 600 dollar one if you want it. Sorry kids.

IYA

Errm... what's stopping Microsoft releasing a cable that goes from the 360 to HDMI? If you check out Lik Sang they actually have this cable (but its not avilable yet)... I'm guessing they are waiting for Microsoft to announce it? Also #28, you're talking crap! Until Microsoft actually announce how much the drive is going to cost, how the hell can you say that it's going to be more expensive than the ps3?? Just shut up.
by - 2006-05-14 07:26:25
a few of you need to do a bit of research before posting...

the only post above that comes close to explaining the HD-DVD situation is no.17. HOWEVER - not all HD-DVDs will include high definition content protection. for example, universal's SERENITY (great film btw), does not include the protection, meaning that people using component out will be able to view the movie at 1080i. it has also been decided that every disc that DOES include the high definition content protection must clearly state on the packaging that it does. i'll be buying the HD-DVD addon, but i'll wait until full 1080p hardware becomes more common in australia. at the moment, the majority of the LCDs available are below this resolution. they have only recently started to sell acer LCDs that have a resolution of 1920x1080.
