New Sony Service As a Tool For PS3

ps3 vs. xboxSony, after being accused by Microsoft's Christ Satchell of not "giving time and effort to their online space", is brewing up something that may put an end to that argument. Sony Online Entertainment in July will debut a service with a working title "Station Launcher" which will provide users access to several of its online PC games.

Station Launcher will also combine lists of players' friends from a variety of the company's games, support chat and provide downloads of new game content and trinkets. Also, it will offer a single point where players can manage payments and link to other Sony-connected sites carrying player rankings and information. Initially, Station Launcher will connect users to Sony's EverQuest, The Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, PlanetSide and EverQuest II. The subscription plan costs $24.99.

But even with all these, the Sony Station Launcher is still an amorphous concept. If this is all that Sony can do to compete with Xbox Live, they may find themselves in serious trouble.

"If this is all that Sony can do to compete with Xbox Live, they may find themselves in serious trouble."

Compete? If the Sony Online service is still free then what is there to compete with? What about Wii? Isn't Wii going to have an online service? Then the Wii will be "competing" with Xbox Live also by your standards.

Why is everyone, including blogs specifically for the PS3, insulting and pointing fingers at Sony now? Is this a new fad? I bet Xbox fans are happy it's not them anymore.

The article seems to outlines a new online service for the PS3 if customers want more info, downloads, and media for a price. I'm not really interested but then again I don't have an IGN Insider account either. I can find the info, downloads, and media for free if I want it bad enough.

The PS3 will be a good machine. Can't promise it annihilating the competitors within the first year it's released but it will be good. They have the third party support the Wii will never enjoy and Japanese developers the Xbox won't be able to "compete" with.

Youre so right. Im sick of people bashing sony, least of all a PS3 blog.

by sausehuhn - 2006-05-11 06:22
» you ask...

...why?

Because people said the PS3 would have this and this and this and in the end it seems like it all turns out not as good as promised.

They showed the Killzone trailer and everbody said "wohoo!" and developers said "these graphics can be possible on PS3" and everbody said "wohoo!" even louder.

And because Sony said "we'll have a wonderful online support" and suddenly it seems like it's the opposide.

That are the reasons.

The whole thing was hyped far too much and in the end all isn't that what we had expected. And even when we had in mind that these trailer were rendered we still had the hope they wouldn't.

It's a disappointment 'cause everbody said it would turn out so wonderful.

Just my opinion...

broken promises or anything. I think M$ hyped up their "wonder-machine" more than Sony ever did. What kind of company buy's a "pre" event showing for MTV and doesn't do anything besides a stupid lame music scene?!?! I'm not necessarily for Sony. I am dissappointed in a way. But in no way is Sony the only one to fail in this instance. M$ always hypes up their crap and has NEVER delivered anything worth the hype. Halo 2 was just horrible, and the Xbox360 has just lost my attention. I don't like that Nintendo changed Revolution to Wii, that was by far the biggest mistake on their part. I'm not a fan of the controller thing, but they do still entice me with backwards compatibility. Sony has always been good with backwards compatibility. Full support from day 1. M$.. hmm wait now.. didn't they have to REMOVE some of the games off of the compatibility listing like a week after it came out? What is causing them so many problems besides having horrible programmers? And don't you dare say it has to do with going from X86 instructions to IBM's weird thing. Look at what Sony has changed its instructions to. A processor nobody has ever seen before. Least with M$'s console, people know it's nearly classified as a Mac. The pre-E3 event or whatver sure discouraged me in a sense, but thats why I'm now leaning more toward PC gaming. Keyboard + mouse > keyboard any day.

» why?

Dude...come on. Everyone was expecting to be blown away by the PS3 at E3... and that is SO not how it turned out. If you're looking for a reason "why" everyone's blogging or reporting that Sony's in trouble, try reading the actual blogs, or watching a video interview... or maybe even an article out there.

Fact is, with all the build up, with Sony coming out and saying how much $$ they've thrown into the developmenet of the system, people were expecting something spectacular. What they delivered, overall was mediocrity - relatively speaking.

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Sony, and currently own or have owned and cherished every one of their consoles. I for one was holding out on the PS3 and still refuse to go for a 360. But at this point, the Wii's got me excited...not the PS3.

» Come on...

Everyone say this with me now .... BETA...

again.. B - E - T - A!!!

How in the world can people snap to super quick judgements that this is all Sony has to offer? Have the fully released it yet? Not that I can see. What I do see is major potential. SOny has many different aspects it can pull from, and they are just giving us a small insite of what they are doing.

As for the whole promising thing, Yea, PS3 is not what they promised in Alpha stage. Final is a bout a rung down from what they wanted, but as tech is today, not saying they will not improve it later models. As for the 360, it's so many rungs down from what they stated in Alpha, I think I got wiplash from watching them drop. But ooo, wait they have add-on's, or such coming.... (thats another rant for later).

Want to talk about E3, they did a good job. Expectations are always a let down, think someone will "blow away" and expect alot and when they get a basic showing they are troubled by it. Don't expect, nor assume. It will only lead to let YOU down.

ahem http://news.com.com/2100-1040-250632.html

great article about how Microsoft promised Toy Story visuals. Funny how everyone remembers Sony saying that but always forget that Microsoft said it too.... Convenient memory loss.

Also people bring up Killzone's E3 2005 CG trailer saying how Sony said it was realtime. Anyone remember last years EA trailer of Madden? Microsoft said that was realtime then EA had an announcement saying it wasn't. Oh yea... everyone forgot... Might as well argue with a wall.

ID RATHER PAY 50 DOLLARS A YEAR FOR A GREAT ONLINE SERVICE WITH GOOD SERVERS THAN A *****TY FREE ONE THAT IS FULL OF AD PLACMENTS!

Wait, So do we have to pay to play PS3 Games online?

» heh

Xbox Live is damn good. Everyone likes to thrash the pricing, but for what you get, I appreciate it. Hell, the E3 exclusive content ALONE made me satisfied when i dropped $50 for a year of live. The Xbox Live marketplace got flooded with Free Stuff. They are doing this to compete with MS's upcoming Live Anywhere feature. Something that will really gimp Sony in the long run. Seeing how with the patent slapped in with Windows Vista, it prevents Sony from doing multiplatform games with a majority of there titles. They can do it with the games they make or ones that are exclusive to there system,, but multiplatform online games that have connectivity through the PC end is a no go. So it's like saying a game like Call of Duty 3, which would surly be on both the PS3 & Xbox 360, that is cross platform capable will only be able to achieve it through the Xbox 360. Not the PS3 cus of the live anywhere feature. MS knew they were up against with Sonys upcoming PS3 online service, so they simply outsmarted them with there own move. Competition is getting heated now =).

Im guessing that the online is not free . am i right or wrong.

by G - 2006-05-11 23:32
» Patent

You can try to patent multi-platform gaming, but it's not something that can hold up in court. It's not innovation. It's not unobvious. The fact that Sony has a miniscule number of PC games OTOH means that multiplatform gaming isn't something MS needs to worry or even think about.

I do find it strange that MS was originally trying to tell everyone that PC gaming is dead and now SEEMS to be going in the other direction on it.

As an Xbox fan, I have come to love the PS3. Flame me if you want. But you'll burn in hell.

» If you look carefuly...

The price is for PC MMORPGs, that's what they charge, not the Sony Online system.

Now, I much rather have a PS3 Beta than a XBOX 360 Alpha that needs hardware upgrades up the wazoo.

And what about dissapointement when Peter Moore promised that Xbox 360 would be like a lucid dream ¬_¬.

I don't know what people talk bad about ps3, sony has a lot of things that xbox and nintendo would never have for now, first the great games, like metal gear, shadow of colossus, god of war, besides that they are a company with experience they have a lot of great and unique games and the loyalty to some companies, and the online interface of socom 3 it was like game spy, i call that and interface you are free to choose with server you want to connect, and look xbox 360, call of duty have to give a patch, ghost recon dissconect every time,baseball2k 6 came with and error, and since the xbox 360 launch i only wait like for 5 or six games and y have to wait like 2 and a half year for them to come, thats the company that people want too support yeah well let them, y like sony beacuse they dont dissapoint me in nothing sooo, and the online from what i see its has more stuff than the xbox live sooo i wait until november for the ps3.
