Motorstorm - Hands On Impessions |
Ó

First thing's first, the game does not look like these screens. I know there was lots of debate as to whether the video shown at last year's E3 was real time or not and I think we can put that argument out to rest. Try to imagine running these screens through a sandpaper bath, rough up the edges, add some aliasing and lower the polygon complexity in the environments and you probably have a better idea of where Motorstorm's at right now in the visual department. That said it's not all doom and gloom, the great part is that the game's fun, tons of fun!
In my post E3 round up I mentioned the fact that Motorstorm reminded my an awful lot of a spiritual successor to Excite Bike and Rally Cross, I still think so, the death defying stunts and unbelievable physics really make this game play just as crazy as the initial trailer looked. As a matter of fact I find myself really wishing I could have just one more go at the controls... shame I'll have to wait till November.
The booth attendant mentioned that the game was only 50% complete and that there was quite a bit work to be done but they were aiming to meet launch. Judging by what I saw I'd say they have a pretty good chance of reaching or at least getting pretty darn close to the target video. The actual vehicles seemed very highly detailed, you could see all the nuts and bolts and crashing into canyon walls was a good way to rip them open like tin cans. Environments were somewhat low poly, and the image quality was generally rough, bu as I said it's early days yet. In the demo I played you took control of a dune buggy and it was extremely satisfying to catch up to a fella on a motorcycle and send him flying through the air, tumbling head over heels till his ragdoll body smacked into the sloshy mud (sadistic isn't it?) Of course the favor would quickly be returned when one of the larger trucks smashed into you from behind, sending your fragile buggy into a ridiculously violent barrel roll that saw chunks of metal go flying into the hot air.
It was also really cool to circle the track numerous times, creating little rivets with your tire tracks that reminded you of the best route and gave you optimal speed as you didn't have to power through fresh mud. The demo included twenty AI controlled vehicles tearing round the track at breakneck speed, taking shortcuts and alternate routes and avenging whatever punishment you were able to deal them with lethal efficiency. One thing's for certain, this game's going to be an absolute blast in multiplayer, the booth attendant mentioned that they were looking at getting nineteen players online in each match. It's going to be utter mayhem. Motorstorm's definitely near the top of my PS3 most wanted list. This and Warhawk...*drool*

i thought it was ingame graphics in the video from last year :/
The game does look like on last years e3, just check out the new screenshots.
Maybe you were playing WRC instead of MotorStorm?
Go look at the recent video of it from E3 2006...not the screenshots.
It is nowhere near those screenshots.
Why would I try to put down a game I'm eagerly looking forward to?
This game does sound very fun. I can't wait to play it either but I dunno... the setting is cool and all but doesn't it get boring sometimes? And I'm pretty sure all the tracks revolve around the dirt. The visuals were pretty good in current gen standards as far as the video clips go, but I'm patiently waiting to see the finished product.
Do u guys think that they might get PS3 demos running on a playstation bus tour, i am dying to get my hands on that controller.
I knew this game last year wasn't real time even though sony suggested it was. Now this year when they let people test out the demo it didnt even come close to those graphics. I watched the E3 2006 Demo and those screens are a ton bette then what it actually looks like.
WOW! I want this game. The one thing that I think I might find a little bad is that it would be on small circuits (OK with, shortcuts and stuff) but what I think would be really cool is if they had a long track so that you would feel like your in the darkha rally or a Gumball (sp?) race. So that all the time you were finding new terrain and having to think how best to approach it ALL THE TIME! Keeping you on edge all the time, instead of following the same bits.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good race, GT4, F1 games are all exciting and I love them, but when I first saw this game last year, the impression it gave me was of a long distance rally, not a race round circuits.
I don't suppose that's a possibility is it?
did people even read the article? lol
they explicitly said they were only 50% complete and that they'd improve on the graphics. At the moment, it looks pretty nice, just imagine how nice it will be once they complete the game.
i'm excited.
Wow all you MS fanboys care about is teh GFX. Well from this little preview this game looks to have awesome gameplay. MS fanboy says "OMG gameplay whats that?" From what ive seen it looks very good and is on my top list to buy games. 20 vehicles that detailed on one map is amazing. This game is going to be absolute mayhem. The crashes look awesome. The mud effects are freakin insane. I dont care what anyone else says even if it doesnt look as good to what they showed at last years E3 it will get close by the time its finished and running on a PS3.
"The game does look like on last years e3, just check out the new screenshots.

"
you are sad knowledge...very very sad.
I really hate sony and Ms fanboys...gfx...gfx...gfx...both companies lie to your face...and you still defend them
i bet sony copy excitetruck with this
Vecha i seem to recall that you are in fact a MS fanboy. Unless im thinking of a different Vecha. I doubt that I am.
on ps3portal I saw a pretty cool movie of this game taken a view from inside the buggy. And it has to be said, while not quite the CGI presentation, it came closer than I expected it would. The physics sure look fun and the graphics pretty decent. It's clear that such early CGI presentations represent concept art that the developers are going to aim for. If they manage this with 16 players online, as intended, and downloadable tracks, I'm sure it will be a hit.
anybody no wat any launch titles r gonna be? cuz i wanna no if i can get mgs4 with my ps3
to #12 how would they copy excite truck why would they have any reason to copy such a *****ty game??
i aint hear ***** about excite truck till this e3 ive heard about the game since last e3.. wii fanboy lol idc what system i get ill find out in a months or 2
watch the trailer for mgs4, it clearly states it's out in 2007, and the smart money is not on 'early 2007' either... expect it in q3 or q4 of 2007.
moan moan, the trailers were cg, so? we're now seeing what ps3 is capable of, so judge it by THAT, not by what was shown a year ago. as we get closer to launch see what you think, and then complain.
yeah yeah, gfx etc, in the end the games on ps3 will seal the deal over 360 for me... the fact that it's more powerful and offers more features is simply a bonus for me.
People doesnt seem to realize that most of the 2005 E3 video is
en first person view, and what have been shown to people
in 2006 E3 have been in third person view.
Give a look at this video labeled "Motorstorm E3 2006 Gameplay"
http://www.ps3portal.com/ps3/videos/30.html
It is mostly in first person and while it is no exact like E3 vids, it is getting pretty near and the action feels a lot more HOT.
Given the development status and how much time they hav left, what 6 months, i reckon theyll have to create most of the content, the dev said they had 1 of each of the 7 classes running round the track, so theyll have to make some more veichle content for each class, and more tracks, i wouldnt consider the track shown at e3 06 to be more than a practice/demo track, all this on top of ai and bug testing too.
I believe the environments will become more emersive and detailed(I think thats spelt wrong) but everything else to be just polished and more shiney (more effects and such)
But even so...it looks loads of fun!!!!!
Cant wait to play it at home
I agree with 18. I've just watched the footage taken from in-car and I gotta say it does look like they have captured alot of the life and kinetics from the E305 rendered vid, I looks like great fun, and still only 50% done, can't wait for this one!
Great Game
Ah it seems MotorStorm draws direct insparation from 1nsane on PC, which was realsed on 2001
....guys....I dun care about grafx
it's a game for god's sake, it's not a pixar movie.
now repeat after me. gameplay. gameplay. gameplay.
now, who wants to line up for PS3 launch with me!
One question to Chris: "and send him flying through the air, tumbling head over heels till his ragdoll body smacked into the sloshy mud (sadistic isn't it?)" - is this true?
So you can own the competition this hard?
If so, then this game will own online.
Pretty much, you can send guys on ATV's and motorbikes flying. It's kind of hard to catch em and judge the impact just right, but it's extremely satisfying. Man I want to play this again!
Anyone remember that game? As you went around the tracks the mud built up everywhere and tyre tracks stayed were they where throuought the race. Was an ace game! I hope this is just as fun.
