Miyamoto Explains Why Wii Has No HD

RaceDuring a Q&A session at E3, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto explained Nintendo's decision to omit High-Definition video output from their upcoming console, the Nintendo Wii. Surprisingly, he did add that Nintendo's next system would include HD video output. Nintendo's next system?!

Miyamoto explains, "the number of HDTVs in homes is really not that high, yet. Of course I think five years down the road it would be pretty much a given that Nintendo would create an HD system, but right now the predominant television set in the world is a non-HD set".

He also said, "We thought it would be better to create a system that allows you to interact with any TV set you have in your home in an entirely new, different way, and even kind of turn that into a toy for your TV that anyone can pick up, interact with and enjoy - rather than only the people who have a very high-tech, specific kind of TV set".

I personally would have to argue with his last statement, because these systems that do include HD video output do not support them exclusively, they also display on traditional televisions just fine (however you won't be seeing what these systems are truly capable of - something that the Wii is not).

low-def marioIf you were paying attention, you will have also noticed that Miyamoto hints at Nintendo possibly creating a new system as soon as five years from now. I guess that means that Nintendo is already working on this unknown system as we speak.

For those of us that spent our hard-earned savings on HD displays, perhaps the 360 or PS3 will more firmly grasp our attention, as they are the implied destination of our High-Dollar, High-Definition investments. But then again, that's just me. What do you think?

» Costs

It is not just about the costs of producing the console. It is also about the cost producing for the console.

HD needs more power inside the console to manage the far higher pixel count. And for games to not look blurry textures have to be saved in a higher resolution too. Also models will have a higher polygon count or they would look inferior on HD displays. That all directly reflects in development costs. Especially when it comes to more polygons it is not always that easy. Animation using more polygons is much more difficult to achieve than with less polygons.

I think Nintendo's goal with the Wii is also an easy and affordable console to develop for. Just look at the price of a devkit. It is nothing compared to a PS3 devkit. (which is about 10 times the price if I remember correctly) Smaller, independent or new developers that cannot afford to compete with HD graphics on a 360 or PS3 will have to focus on gameplay. With the Wii they have the classic controller or even the wiimote which offers a lot of new ways for gameplay. In the end I guess the Wii will be the first choice for small studios. 360 and PS3 games like to compete graphcis wise, if you cannot produce a game with really good graphics it is likely to dust on the shelves. Just to be clear, I own a 360 but that does not keep me from thinking that a lot of 360 games are more into graphics than gameplay.

True, you could make HD just an option. If a developer wants to use it than they should go ahead and do so.

» reaading too between the lines

I just think it was loose translation and not actual confirmation of another system in development. and if he did mean it i think it was just a bad attempt to spin for the naysayers.

» As long...

...as Nintendo does not say that they will definetly stop making consoles of course there is a next one. There were rumors of the gamecube being Nintendo's last console but even with its comparingly weak sales Nintendo did make a profit with gamecube - as opposed to MS with Xbox (even 360) for example. Even if the Wii sells not as much as 360 or ps3 Nintendo will definetly make a profit with Wii. And as long Wii is not a total financial disaster I guess Nintendo will develop a new console; So the Miyamoto's hint that there will be a new console is not surprising at all.

» 480p and 720p

Please just remember that Nintendo has said that the Wii will support 480p and 720p.

Also think about the problem microsoft is having trying to fit 1 game onto a standard DVD in HD.... not good. Sony fixed that problem with blueray disk games, at the price of $600 per console.

» More HD problems

-Some developers do think that gamers are expecting to see visuals that not even next-gen technology can pull off. The developers at Chattering Pixels observed that when gaming moved from Playstation / Saturn / Nintendo 64 to Playstation 2, GameCube and Xbox, the hardware gave developers a huge leap in quality. But the current leap we're looking at now isn't so grand.

"You could render the same polygon on the XBox and on X360 with the same shaders running and it would look exactly the same," says Fuller. "The same could not be said when we transitioned from the Playstation to the Playstation 2."-

I didn't even know what a HDTV really was till MS and Sony made such a big deal out of them... I don't have any plans to buy one...

» pc monitor?

how good is the pc monitor compared to a tv in terms of good visuals? will the games of wii look better on a pc monitor than a tv?

by Chekote - 2006-05-16 05:22
» PC vs HDTV

@6:

A HDTV monitor can be as good as or even better than a PC monitor. Most homes have PC monitors that run at either 1024x768, or 1280x1024. For comparison, here are the Standard & HDTV resolutions:

Digital TV - SDTV:

* 480i - 704x480 interlaced

* 480p - 704x480 progressive

Digital-HDTV:

* 720p - 1280x720 progressive

* 1080i - 1920x1080 interlaced

* 1080p - 1920x1080 progressive

I definately agree with #1. Also what a lot of people don't seem to realise, is that when making a system that is designed to run on both SDTV and HDTV, the developers have to either put more effort into making an interface that can scale well at all resolutions, or simply stick with the lowest common denominator (Like Oblivion did with its HUGE text).

We will only begin to see the full benefit from HDTV systems when they *exclusively* support HDTV.

» higher price

The entire reason that they don't want to include HD is because it would make the price higher. Also, developers would waste their time making more detailed graphics for HD sets.

» if i can save money

» ummm

hd doesnt matter with the generation of gaming i think, it would take a huge boost towards this when this generation of gaming dies out, so next console generations will use hd at its full potential, as long as it can play in 16:9 ratio im fine with that.

by Fran - 2006-05-16 20:39
» agreed 13

HD does have alot of potential, but it's still not affordable to the average gamer or the standard yet. Maybe in 5-10 years, but no less.

by qwerty - 2006-05-16 22:35
» Wow no HD?

I had no clue. Now I'm not so sure I want one. My PS2 looks like absolute sh*t on my HDTV even with the component cable. I'd be pretty pissed if I spent $200 to $300 on a Wii and it looked like that.

And what's this about HDTV's being too expensive for the casual gamer? What, and the PS3 isn't? You can get a decent HDTV from Samsung for LESS than a PS3.

» @ #13

and who said the casual gamer will buy a ps3 at 600 lol. dont worry about the wii looking atall like the ps2 in terms of quality. the wii is graphically superior to the cube and the cube had stunning graphics in the last gen wars in games that took advantage of its graphics chip.

» Hey qwerty

If the PS2 sucks on your HDTV, then it is your TV or cables that suck, not the PS2. Mine looks great! And I have a Samsung. God of War is the best on it.

» @ 17

i never said the casual gamer will buy a ps3, thats not what i meant at all, im backing up the wii.
