Two years after the game was first announced, Sony has finally released a trailer for the third installment in the popular Killzone franchise.

Killzone 2 has often been compared budget-wise to a Hollywood movie, and the trailer itself lends a lot of weight to the comparison with some gorgeous graphics and fluid animation. The voice acting is also pretty good, and the little bits of gameplay footage suggest one hell of an action-packed experience.

Well, see it for yourself. You can check out Killzone 2's E3 2007 trailer below. Killzone 2 for the Sony PlayStation 3 video game console is currently slated for release next year.

Killzone looks WAYyyyyyyyy better than Halo 1,2,3 all together! I can see that all that programming in the background is only possible with the Cell Processor because all those background events have its own core to control it beautifully.

They forgot to put a warning for xbots and Mister Common Sense in this video. Xbots are so stupid they can't watch videos running on the cell proccesor. Xbots might be radiated that their Xbox 360s get red doomed.

» Incredible...

its not the texture resolution or mapping,its this Incredible artisitic style and atmosphere

the texture are less detailed perhaps than Crysis...but the incredible art style,special effects from the lighting to sparkles....the atmosphere....makes this game superior than Crysis and maybe even the rest of the competition [assuming there is competition]

Guerrila did it.....the trailer exceed the E3 2005 trailer not by texture quality or detail but the atmosphere and special effects....its superior than the E3 2005 trailer

no more shiny graphics and cheap bloom effects everywhere.....everything looks solid real

it seems Sony have done it....by aquiring Guerilla games and turning it to 1st party with unlimited funding and a staff of more than 135 members.....KIllzone 2 is the best looking Console FPS yet....and exceeds the PC crysis in many aspects

watch it in Hi-def....and compare this to microsofts re-hash and feeble effort Halo3 [A.K.A:Halo 2 vista]....its in a different league

finally.....the PS3 has shown it definite superiority,a single character model of Killzone 2 has more Polygons than the entire screen of Killzone one...you can read this at IGN interview

this intense number of Polygons and geography can only be utilized through the CELL and RSX co-working making it impossible on the 360

i cannot wait for them to announce the multi-player details....

Beutifull indeed......i never thought it was possible

but it did

Its times like this that I'm glad I have a ps3 on hold for a game like this. This game looks fantastic and moves very well. I think this game may just take the lead for best first person shooter if it can be just as impressive on the multiplayer side. Well done, too bad it doesnt come out till next year though.

Devleoper statement states :

Hey folks.

I%u2019m a little busy at the moment, but I have to say something!

First of all. WHAT DID I SAY? Did I lied? Am I a jackass, because I could not say anything about KILLZONE %u201C2%u2033? I could not. It IS one of our most important games, in the history of SONY Computer Entertainment. And I hope you like it!

And I am not finished yet:

- Don%u2019t forget one thing: This game is PRE-pre-alpha! So, not PRE-Alpha, PRE-PRE! So, please don%u2019t start some %u201CHey, can you see that texture poppin%u2019 up! PLEASE, stop it, ok?

There will be much more details, effects and so on. Give us some time.

- Second: Half of the animations are still NOT in the game so, it will look MUCH MUCH better in the final game. Yes, we said it: The animations are matching the target render. Maybe it looks even better in the final game.

- third: Is there already a video out? I get no info here, because the conference is killing us (with joy). If so, enjoy it! If not, playstation storewill have it. You have to see it in HD to believe it.

And finally: mckmas8808, Bad_Boy, Busty, I said it, and we delivered!

So, wait for the conference for more info.

Amazing work done by the people over at Guerrila. Hope this game is a huge succes. This kind of game should not be used for consoe wars, it should be celebrated as yet another great leap forward in the evolution of gaming just like Gears of War and other games except halo which stole from every fps that came out years before it and tried to carry on as though it was revolutionary and original.

» Please. Killzone looks great, but don't go overboard!

"Guerrila did it.....the trailer exceed the E3 2005 trailer not by texture quality or detail but the atmosphere and special effects....its superior than the E3 2005 trailer"

Er no, it's inferior to the E3 2005 trailer, but atleast the devs have captured the look and feel of the 2005 trailer (which was the whole point in the first place until Sony turned it into a controversy).

"finally.....the PS3 has shown it definite superiority,a single character model of Killzone 2 has more Polygons than the entire screen of Killzone one...you can read this at IGN interview"

*Sigh* This IS next-gen, and there are numerous games already on the 360 and PS3 that have more polygons on a single model (person, car, object etc) than an entire scene in Killzone.

"this intense number of Polygons and geography can only be utilized through the CELL and RSX co-working making it impossible on the 360"

This game looks great, but it doesn't look any better than numerous other next-gen FPS titles. Equally, I'm not seeing anything in Killzone that is impossible on the 360, but as usually, certain gamers are obsessed with trying to 'prove' the PS3's superiority over the 360. If Gears of War was on the PS3 instead of the 360, gamers would have been saying how it is only possible on the PS3, perhaps even daring 360 gamers to 'name a better looking game then!'.

by Joker - 2007-07-11 04:36
» O_O

I just had an eyegasm!!

And this is PRE-Beta??? Amazing! This is the defining trailer of E3 07. While it's not as close as the CGI version we saw a few years back, it's still lightyears ahead of anything I've seen from Microsoft's presentation lastnight.

My only concern, however, is that the only thing that could possibly kill Killzone 2 is not graphics, sound, or physics, but the gameplay aspect. Hopefully they can create a killer single player campaign and a true Halo-slaying multiplayer environment on the PSN.

» Halo did great things for console FPSs

Even if you don't like it, atleast be mature enough to give credit where it's due.

No FPS had great physics, great AI, land and air vehicles (with great handling), seamlessly intergrated indoor and outdoor environments ALL IN ONE GAME. Not even on the PC in Nov 2001. You could find combinations of the list I provided, but not all. So yes, Halo didn't pioneer these areas, but it was the first to do them all and do them all well. A special mention goes to it's AI which was more advanced than the AI in PC games at the time (including Half-life).

Until Halo came along, gamers (especially PC gamers) tended to look down at console FPSs, even GoldenEye on the N64 which, a game which was loved by console gamers but a control scheme which was like a cross between a FPS and Time Crisis. Halo defined the control scheme for console FPSs, and it's the model other console FPSs follow (unlike the one in Goldeneye).

So imo, Halo's place in gaming is well deserved. Without Halo, you wouldn't be looking forward to Killzone, since that game came about as the devs answer to Halo on the PS2, and now here we are looking at their work on the PS3 (and looking excellent).

by LiquidZ3r0 - 2007-07-11 04:50

» wow

This is what I got my PS3 for. If they can improve on this, then holy cow!

However, it doesn't look as good as the the E3 demo from last year. BUt then that was a complete con. Supposedly running on a PC that could power the world at 2fps and then sped up.

But it'll be sooooo long before we can play :(

You're just a pathetic 360 fanboy who will never admit to a game looking better on the PS3 because you're so blinded by brand loyalty. Sure it doesn't look exactly like the CGI trailer but honestly nothing this gen will match that, 360 included. But the trailer looked awesome nontheless. The lighting and physics were simply amazing.

by GamerFeed - 2007-07-11 05:00
» Read 1UP's unbiased view of the demo being played

Many opinions here are based upon seeing the trailer for the first time, but like you said, it's gameplay that's important.

But i just saw the unreal tournament 3 trailer and it pretty much killed anything in this trailer. This still looks really nice but i think Epic has the best looking game so far, granted this is pre beta so killzone 2 still has time to kill ut3.

Are you a PS3 fanboy posting this just so that you can follow it up with "OMG, it's realtime you idiotl, and it proves the graphics must be really awesome if you Xbots think it's all CG lol!....etc".

And you're just pathetic it seems. Atleast, you come across that way if you think my post make's me a 360 fanboy (which is interesting as I don't even own any next-gen consoles, including a Wii). I have no desire to blindly support Sony, MS or Nintendo, I'm just interested in games, and in future, will buy one or more consoles, therefore I will say things as I see it.

Killzone looks as I expected, superb next-gen graphics but nothing beyond what other future games will be offering. Why must I pretend it's the best and beyond other consoles? Because you want me too?

Look, just because YOU disagree doesn't somehow make you right and gamers like myself wrong. So if you disagree, that's fine, but try offering a responce to the points I made instead of offering insults. That's the mature way to participate in a discussion. :|

by Shatterdome - 2007-07-11 05:26
» That's the thing...

Is you have to wait untill sometime in 2008 for it...it'd be nice if it was like jan or feb....but you know it's going to be mid-late 2008.

It would have been worth it if it looked like the trailer, but not for something that looks as good as a game that will have been out for 2 years.

It still looks good....not as good as the E3 2k5 trailer, and no better then gears...but still that is good.

Some little effects are nicfe, like the pillars crumbling apart....question is if it's just for aesthetics or will it function within gameplay (Ie, can you completely destroy pillars)

I also understand it's pre-alpha...but again they've had 2 years of dev and only 6-8 months more to go, so it's not going to change that drastically...

I see, perhaps I missed it, but could you point out where I'm being negative towards Killzone? I have nothing but compliments for Killzone, but at the same time, I'm not going to keep quiet when (as usual) gamers make wild invalid claims and try to use the game as a weapon against another console or game. I prefer to keep things in perspective instead of overhyping things as fanboys (always) do. sorry if that offends you (and if it does, perhaps you should look at yourself for the reasons why).

by GamerFeed - 2007-07-11 05:41
» Except they've seen the game being played. Have you?

The answer is no!

The impressions of a carefully orchestrated trailer is NOT the same as the impressions of a game, and it's rather foolish to think the two are the same.

I would no more judge Killzone as a GAME upon that trailer than I would Halo 3 upon it's trailers, regardless of snippets of gameplay cut together.

So please, 1UP have a far better idea of Killzone as a game being they've sat down and watched a WHOLE LEVEL being played.

So do explain why our opinions based upon a short trailer means more than the opinions of those who've watched the game being played for an hour or so (or however long it took to play the demo).

by Kyle - 2007-07-11 05:43
» Good...but

Looks frikkin amazing, but one good game does not a system sell.

If the PS3 were $399, I would buy it just for this game. But at $599, and no big library of good games, there's not a chance in hell I'd pay $600 for one game.

Just to be clear, I don't own ANY of the new systems (I'm an avid PC gamer). But with the price drop on the 360 Elites, HDMI with 120gb hard drive (and they actually provide the cables), and a HUGE library of killer games (GTA4 exclusive content too), I'd be stupid to invest my money elsewhere.

Now granted, I'm not buying a 360 till they fix the Red Ring 'O Death *****, and I truly believe the PS3 to be a killer machine, but Sony should have made this a gaming machine, not a way to sell Blu-Ray. I believe the PS3 would run circles around the competition if it was aggressively priced. But sadly, Sony's head is way too big for that...

by GamerFeed - 2007-07-11 05:48
» And one more thing...

...Yes you're right, everyone is biased to some degree and therefore unbiased wasn't the right word to use, 'balanced' perhaps would have been a better word to use, refecting the fact that they focussed on the pros and cons of the demo, instead of talking about the great things only (as some have) or how it doesn't compare to E3 2005 (like some others).

BTW, perhaps you could try replying without insults next time. It's not necessarily.

» Maturity

Halo only became popular because it was one of the first FPS available for a mainstream console that people could actually enjoy without owning a high end pc. Although I dont appreciate you "Mature comment" My comments are always mature and respectful. That being said, I will agree with you in that Halo helped cement FPS gaming on the console. But as far as FPS goes, it is an above average shooter, nothing more. Ask any person that has payed fps gamse since before halo.

by D-OveRMinD - 2007-07-11 07:36
» Not my point

Oh I'm not saying this is the ONLY good game, but lets be real. The entire media and all the game sites agree...even SONY agrees, there is only a handful of killer titles, and that will not sell a $600 game console...or even $500 game console.

And if you look at the Elite...HDMI with cables included and a 120gb hard drive for over $100 less than the highest end PS3. I could care less about Blu-Ray, so that argument is irrelevant. I'm looking at the gaming aspects.

by BL - 2007-07-11 07:45
» yeh

by D-OveRMinD - 2007-07-11 07:50
» Please

And the 360 and PS3 fanboi's come out in groves. This game looks fantastic, and the action looks intense.

Ultimately, they are both within range of each other when it comes to raw power...both having their advantages and disadvantages. It all comes down to games.

Huge names like Konami that have for years had exclusive titles for Sony systems, are not impressed with the sales or the price drop of the PS3. See this article: http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN0924355620070710?pageNumber=1

The 360 has an install base of over 5.6 million so far with over 10 million LIVE subscribers. Add to that there are an average of 5.6 games per 360 compared with 0.6 games per PS3. Wow...kinda lets you know who is buying it...people who want a cheap Blu-Ray player.

The Wii is at 2.5 million.

The PS3 is at 1.3 million.

The kicker her is that the sales of the PS3 have all but stopped. They made the majority of their worldwide numbers at launch. Even the GBA outsold the PS3 last month...that's just sad.

So ultimately, the PS3 is an awesome console with a handfull of awesome games at a not-so-awesome price.

It's not the console itself that sucks...it's the price.

» Still not better than the PS3

Sony doesn't force you to buy all your peripherals from them. I have 160GB hard drive on my PS3. That's because I can put any hard drive I want in there without voiding the warranty. Also I can transfer my saves to any kind of flash media card I want and take it with me,l and don't have to by a Sony memory card like you do with the 360, Also I can use any blue tooth headset I want and my system comes with a rechargeable controller I don't have to go out and buy a rechargeable kit for my wireless controller. I have Wifi and PSP interconnectivi ty. If I want to watch videos, view photos or listen to music on my PS3 I don't have to stream it or buy it from Sony I can just put it straight to the hard drive and store it there. Not to mention that I can browse the web on my TV with it. watch you tube videos right on my TV if I feel so inclined. Plus the Blu-Ray player that you say you don't care for. And las t but not least it can upscale my existing DVD collection to 1080p. Add to that all the great games that are on the way plus the already existing games like Resistance, Motorstorm and the multiplatform games and I think it more than justifies the price. I can say this because I own both consoles and love my 360 but my PS3 just offers a lot more, and doesn't have me fearing the red ring of Death every time I turn it on.

» Ok

"Halo only became popular because it was one of the first FPS available for a mainstream console that people could actually enjoy without owning a high end pc."

The first high quality console FPS that console gamers could enjoy. That's the difference Vsions. If Halo sucked, then it would not have reached the status that it has. Just being a fps on a console is not enough (look at Killzone on the PS2).

""Mature comment" My comments are always mature and respectful."

Fair enough (perhaps like my use of the word 'unbiased' before, mature wasn't quite the right choice), however my issue was with your treatment of Halo as being nothing more than a game which stole from other fps (which by definition means 99% of what we see in games today has been 'stolen' from other games) and that it pretended to be something it wasn't (not sure how a game can do that, but anyway...).

"That being said, I will agree with you in that Halo helped cement FPS gaming on the console."

Good to see. :)

"But as far as FPS goes, it is an above average shooter, nothing more. Ask any person that has payed fps gamse since before halo."

But that's the point, "since" Halo. Like I said, at the time, no FPS was offering all that Halo was offering. I've been a PC gamer since the end of the 80s, and as FPSs grew in popularity thanks to iD, I remember PC gamers hoping to see vehicles in new FPSs, but each time they would be disappointed, and if there were vehicles, it would be in a specific level with limited control for a limited period (like the tank in Golden Eye). Also, FPS levels were typical either indoors or outdoors, and the AI was usually poor, with the online component making up for the lack of decent AI. Halo changed that.

Of course, since Halo first appeared in 2001, FPSs have improved greatly, but this is true for all games/genres. So I'm not here saying Halo1/2 are the greatest FPSs ever created, but I would say they were easily the best console FPSs last gen (hence deserve their success), with Halo 2 having a superb online component which made it one of the best, if not the best, online console gaming experiences last gen.

"payed fps gamse since before halo"

I didn't notice the before. In that case you're completely wrong. As I 've said, I've been playing PC games and hence PC FPSs since the beginning, and no FPS on the PC offered everything I listed for Halo at the time of release. That's what made Halo the success it was, it wasn't that it did any one thing that was new, but that it brought ALL those things I listed together into one seamless world, and THAT was new to gaming, and hence offered a new gaming experience for FPS fans, even for long time PC gamers like myself.

by GamerFeed - 2007-07-11 09:09

"...looks about as good as any other console shooter."

And it does, and they're including Gears of War and UT3 in that comment. What more do you want?

Remember, they are talking about the GAMEPLAY graphics here, not the realtime cinematics which dominates the beginning of that trailer.

"'About' as good??? Meanwhile, every other gaming site is up in arms about how amazing the game is looking so far."

Every other site? From what I'm seeing, many feel it's on par with games like GeOW, a few note areas in the graphics which they feel falls short of GeOW, some are saying it's on par with anything they've seen on the PS3, some are saying it's the best thing they've seen on the PS3 so far etc.

And by the way, every website out there has rated the PS3 online experience as paling in comparison to LIVE...as if it was an afterthought. And how many subscribers do "you" have?

Your right, I should have compared it to the PS3 that is already out. 360 has double the hard drive capacity for only $30 more. The new PS3 charges $100 for only a 20gb bump. That is a deal!

Of course, all that HD space will be nice for the exclusive GTA4 downloadable content the 360's getting.

» Too bad indeed

Unreal Tournament 3 (also known as UT2007) will be released on 360 this November. You fail.

That story is about Amazon, not international numbers. Also, shooting up 2800% from nothing means nothing. Also, the only reason they shot up that much is because Amazon slashed the price before the announcement and people swarmed to get it because they thought it was a limited time price or a mess up and wanted to take advantage of it.

MGS4 is still exclusive...for now...it's Konami's president saying he is not pleased with the way Sony is doing things that don't bode well. They probably already had an exclusive agreement with this title, but you can bet that won't be the case in the future.

And yes, things are bright for MS, as they have more next gen consoles on the market than both Wii and PS3 combined. Plus 4 times as many games.

By the way...for those that think the PS3 is outselling the 360 in it's home country of Japan, you fail.

Latest sales numbers from Japan:

* Nintendo DS: 423K

* Nintendo Wii: 338K

* Sony PSP: 221K

* Sony PlayStation 2: 187K

* Microsoft Xbox 360: 155K

* Sony PlayStation 3: 81K

And for games:

* Pokémon Diamond (DS)

* Mario Party 8 (Wii)

* Spider-Man 3 (PS2)

* Pokémon Pearl (DS)

* Wii Play w/remote (Wii)

* Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360)

* Guitar Hero II w/guitar (Xbox 360)

* Spider-Man 3 (Xbox 360)

* Command + Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (Xbox 360)

* Guitar Hero II w/guitar (PS2)

4 games in the top ten in Japan for the 360...NONE for PS3.

I will hand it to the venerable PS2, as it is the only thing selling for Sony anymore. But they are about to drop support for it and the games have stopped. Where does that leave Sony? Trailing behind the competition. WAY behind the competition.

» HAlo control system

Actually, Halo's control system was modeled on the Time Splitters controls, which only got it right by virtue of beng the first ps2-gen fps and hence have dual analogue as standard. Every console fps since has used it - just because its the most intuitive system for a dual-thmb stick controler.

» The examination of this game depends entirely upon your preference in graphics.

I can understand some people stating that this game doesn't look as incredible Gears of War. I can also understand other people saying this looks better than Gears of War. It all has to do with your personal preference in graphical effects. For instance, some prefer high resolution textures to express a sense of realism in games, which is used in Gears of War. Others think a high polygon count and excellent lighting (as expressed in Killzone 2) expresses realistic fidelity in a better way.

Personally, I prefer the latter. Consequently so, I was excited by Bioshock. It's graphical styles are befitting to my tastes. However, I do believe Killzone 2 is, graphically, a cut above Gears of War (no offense intended, Gears is still a fantastic game I'd play any day) due to its excellent use of effects, like the smoke, fire, blood (all next-gen games seem to lack realistic blood, kudos to GG) and motion blur.

Most importantly, I think the deciding factor was the sheer extent of debris and level size in this game. According to the developers, this game utilizes over 2GBs of space per level. I don't doubt that in the least. When I watched this trailer for the first time.

Gears of War is superior in texture detail and avid use of bump mapping. It did have have motion blur, but I think that effect is a far better medium of expression in an FPS than in a third person shooter. Aside from the effects, my opinion on this game is based, again, on my preferences.

Still, this game is absolutely an amazing achievement. I still

got that sense of watching a CGI trailer, and I agree that this trailer was a faithful representation of Sony's promise.

Considering Killzone 1 was a dissapointment and considering what they're investing in this game. I'm sure they'll avoid the problems of the original Killzone and deliver a truly amazing experience.

» Really?

I thought the lighting and fire was phenomenal and on par with the CGI trailer. However the fire seems to be stylistically different, but on par, with Gears of War's fire. Further backing up my point. Right now I cannot tell if the fire in this trailer is dynamic or not. If it is, then it will surpass Gears' fire, in my opinion.

That means nothing! The issue here was that one MODEL has more polygons than a SCENE in Killzone on the PS2. That has nothing to do with the size of the level, it's about the number of polygons in a character compared to Killzone on the PS2. So GamerFeed is RIGHT.

The characters in Killzone 2 look great, but they are no more detailed than the characters in GeOW and I expect UT3, and you can see the polygons on the edges (just like other next gen games).

So you could say exactly the same thing about the models in many next-gen games on both the 360 and PS3, which is the point GamerFeed was making.

Try READING next time before you respond.

by Player97 - 2007-07-11 22:05
» ^^^ Perhaps

But I believe it was Halo that refined it to what we take for granted today. It's not just about which actions are mapped to which buttons and analog sticks, but HOW it controls, including acceleration, dead zones, auto aim etc. Halo brought much needed refinement in many areas within the control scheme, hence is considered the de facto standard for console FPSs.

"Its funny that 360 owners have to buy a new system to have 120gb, when all PS3 users need to do is unscrew our HardDrive n pop in a new 1"

Yes, when it comes to the HDD, the PS3 is much more flexible than the 360, but the HDD in the 360 is upgradeable, hence 360 owners can also upgrade by purchasing the 120GB 360 HDD sold seperately. They don't _have_ to purchase a new console. I'm surprised you didn't know this Eclipze_.

» Gears of War graphically excellent? uh...no?

I have yet to meet someone that could tell me how Gears of War is any better looking than most games of the same time. It is not the most beautiful game of all time like most xbox fanboys claim.

IMO the character models in GeoW are trash. Faces look like they were made out of clay, the body armor looks cool but as anyone with half a brain in game design realizes, they are made up of nothing but well lit textures. In terms of polys they are a huge help to keep em low.

The environments in Gears are nice but nothing out of this world that I haven't seen equally as good in other titles. Too many people hype gears for bein graphically superior to anything of its time when they are just blurring the lines between graphics and the fun they had when playing cuz it IS a fun game.

Personally, I think that Gears of War is graphically subpar and just utilizes the 360's sharp whites and dark blacks very well to hide the flaws from most people. Let's be honest, the rain stage is the only one that really makes you go "wow that looks cool". The stage just before in the truck looks like a freaking PS2 title.

Hi x,

I read your comment and I do agree, GeOw is over-hyped. I mean, I loved the game, and I did like the rain effect (especially as this was one thing I didn't like in Oblivion - it rained through the ceiling in Oblivion). I mean, sure GeOW looks great, but the environments are always small, and the graphics were marked by an overuse of textures.

I actually thought "The Darkness" was a better-looking game (I just finished playing it on my PS3 and have started Ninja Gaiden Sigma). This is not to say that I think "The Darkness" on 360 isn't as good. I haven't played the 360 version yet and am in no position to comment on the graphics for the 360 version. I might rent the 360 version and play it on my 360 just to compare though.
