E3: Microsoft's Shane Kim on dropping the Xbox 360's price |
Ó
With the announced price drop for the Playstation 3, a lot of people have been asking if Microsoft will follow by lowering the price of the Xbox 360 as well. Gaming site 1UP was lucky enough to talk to Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim who hinted at a price drop this holiday season.Shane said that past figures have shown that 75 to 80 percent of the business gets done $199 and below. After that he cited inflation and the capabilities of the Xbox 360 in terms of the product's worth.
Kim added that US$ 249 could be the mass-market price point for consoles today. Regardless, they're still going by the US$ 199 and are in the process of" trying to drive costs out of the system as much as possible so we can hit those price points."
With regards to answering the price drop by Sony this E3, he said a quite a few things that might interest you. He said in no uncertain terms that July is a very odd time to drop the price in the console. Besides, Microsoft doesn't feel that it is a major necessity as of this time.
Stay tuned. We didn't announce anything here, didn't feel the need to. July is a very odd time to announce a price reduction. I'm not even sure Sony announced a price reduction, anyway, but we don't feel the need to do it here at E3.
Is Microsoft resting on the laurels of its success, or do they have something big planned that'll shake the market up once again? Keep checking back here at QJ.NET for the latest updates.

I was just wondering if they do a price drop like this does it mean there might be an annoucement at next E3 about plans for a new 360?
Has anyone seen the price for the Halo3 360? I would bet we will see a price drop before H3 launches.
They are playing this at their game... They have great titles and the system is great. XBOX live is awesome.. I am sure they will drop the price the fall right in time for this onslaught of AAA titles coming and they will clean up... Its going to be a great Fall/Holiday time :)
im pretty sure after the elite the 360's are done. ur an idiot because the next thing microsoft will announce at the next E3 is either a handheld gaming system(but they probably wont bother since nintendo has a monopoly on it) or they will anounce the next generation of xbox and ITS NOT GONNA BE CALLED A 360!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! the only reason its called a xbox 360 instead of xbox 2 is because sony has the playstation 3. if you ask an average person if they want a xbox 2 or a playstation 3, every single one will say playstation 3. thats why xbox called it a 360 fricked retard!
nintendo fanboy your partially right, the other main reason its called #60 is cause its supposed to work on all cylinders like a circle. And whats the angle of a circle DUH! 360.
And stop calling him an idiot. He is just asking a question. Your the idiot. I swear take you stupid name"nintendo fanboy" and leave the XBox forums you moron.
I was just wondering, Will this really help MS i mean lets bring in some facts. One MS has already lost 1.15 billion dollars on there faulty console, which they finally admit that all of there 11.5 million consoles worldwide was flawed.
But a price can't help MS any. They will be losing more money with each console bought.
It also points out that the warranty Just makes it that they will lose more money, but the consumers will likely benefit somewhat. But seriously how much will this help them. To me its a ticking time bomb waiting to detonate. Anyone care to elaborate. Remember this is just a statement. Im not bashing them.
I think MS is doing the things by the book, (and remenber we are talking about Bill Gates here, his bringing all his malice & knoledgement in businnes to this market).
The company that is playing catch up is Sony, I thought they were in the right path when they announced the price cut, but with the recent news about 60GB phased out units, I think they shoot themselves in the foot.
The only company that MS should worry is Nintendo, and right now they know they can stop them from taking first place, at least for this moment. Nintendo is selling Wiis because of the innovation of the product. Is an innovative control with a very crappy system (and I considered it "crappy" because they are selling a system that is less powerful than the original X-Box for $250.00 bucks, when you can get a regular X-box for less than $100.00, and the technology for the control is not new, is old infrared technology, is genius! but is a Rip-off at the same time).
I think in the future the Wii cannot compete with the other system in terms of graphic, imagine the development for the 360 & PS3 in two years, is now and you compare games like Gears and Resistance to anything the Wii can throw and them and it doesn't fell like next gen.
Maybe I'm bashing Nintendo too much here, but is because they are beginning to take that arrogant attitude that make them fall in the past. The said they don't want to compete with the other systems, and right now, with the succes of the Wiil, you see people like Reggie gloating and bashing MS and Sony, and I don't think that's good for a company that 1) Goes from fisrt to third in the last two generations of war consoles, and 2) their product is inferior compare to the ones their competitors have. Is only innovation, and that wears off.
Ms have a price drop for the 360 for the future, they don't want to announced it right now because people will stop buying the consoles, waiting fir that price drop. I think the time will be when Halo 3 comes out , there you'll see the price drop announcement.
Release a new model of Xbox which eliminates the Premium and Core consoles after the 'limited edition' Elite is finished for $299 US which includes 2 wireless controllers, built in wi-fi, 120GB HD, HDMI and free access to Xbox online gameplay (they can make their profit off the online marketplace). For a console that claims to be a 'media centre' they could install DVD-Recordable hardware to compensate for lack of a next gen drive, DVD recorders are cheap these days and people being able to record tv onto the Xbox 360's HDD would make it a desirable option (forget HD-DVD, it's over!)
The problem with current Xbox 360 is the additional costs eg controller, memory card/hdd, wireless adaptor, live gold membership, headset/keyboard etc that make it more expensive than PS3 and the PS3 has Bluray FFS!
august 1st is the price drop douchebag
STFU u idiot I didn't mean a new 360 as a new sku I meant it as a new generation for the xbox(which I should have stated for morons and fanboys such as ur self) and what I said was they might annonce plans or such for this nex gen xbox cause the average person sees when something have a massive price drop such as this it could lead to many things for a console
The new falcon chips prevent the overheating and the price cut helps sales by still making it much cheaper than the PS3. That way it still has better game selection and quality, same price difference it did before the PS3's price cut, and the same reliability as the PS3. That way it will totally kick the PS3's ass on all fronts. You will understand soon.
They don't need to do all that or sell it that cheap because unlike the PS3, IT HAS THE GAMES!
Besides they would lose a lot more money, smart ass.
First of all the xbox has been out for a year or so and the ps3 just came out and the ps3 will pwn the xbox360 in time it needs a year or so for great games. look at socom look at killzone 2 , mgs4 , gt5 and lots more we will pwn all of u XboX *****ing Sucks and they will be the next dreamcast hahahahaahahhaa hha newbs u will die let microsoft stick 2 windows not game consoles sony and nintendo own that over a decade, hahahah lame ass xbox loves u sleep with urs dont u
ps i aint a fanboy at all i dont give a ***** bout any systems
» @ nintendo fanboy
wow
I have never seen a bigger douche jew like you
are not particularly costly to manufacture, we are way past the 120GB HDD anyway, DVD recorders are only slightly dearer than players, a second controller and online access should be standard so people can buy 'THE GAMES' and enjoy them at home against a freind or online against others without having to spend more money than a PS3 would cost to end up with an inferior system. Microsoft make money off the games, they wont sell many games or consoles if you have to buy a bunch of extra ***** to play them! Microsoft's priority should be to get a lot more market share.
watching South Park when you should have been going to school?
Are you 7. I can type better then that, in the dark with my keyboard upside down using my toes.
You are dumb. HALO 3!!!!! you jackass look at Halo 2. It sells systems. Gears, Shadowrun, cross play with Vista, achievements, Mass Effect, Bioshock. And dumbass GTA is coming to 360. Xbox will win, and by the way any gamer knows dreamcast is an amazing system.
