E3: Iwata says the Wii could break the PS2 record |
Ó
The president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, has given word that the Wii can break the 100 million console record of the PS2. Some people would probably dismiss this comment, but the fact of the matter is, Nintendo has been posting some phenomenal numbers ever since the Wii's launch.Of course, there were conditions that Iwata mentioned on breaking this record. He told Reuters in the E3 conference that "Sony's PS2 sales of 100 million units is an extraordinary number that our home game console business has not achieved, but if we can make our bid to expand the gaming population a continued success, we could exceed that."
He was also asked if the company plans on dropping the price of their console, due to the announced price drop of the PS3 and the upcoming PSP lite. Iwata has given word that both products are unlikely to have any effect on Nintendo. He explained this further: "I wouldn't say there is no overlap between the group of customers Sony is targeting and the group of users that Nintendo is targeting. But that overlap is quite small."
So there you have, Nintendo has thrown down the gauntlet and has openly said they can break the PS2 sales record. They have been upping production on the Wii to handle the great demand for it though, they might actually be able to pull this one off.

thats not gonna happen because they have a system that after a couple of years is gonna fade away like game cube. wii is not a long term system
wooaah..thats a biig statement to make. I guess the wii has enough potential for this to happen and it does have that expanded audience so i guuess this might be possible. still its a biig statement to make
Wii have a chance but they need more than just family games. Also need nice sport games, better shooting, and more rated R.
More hardcore games are needed to break the ps2 record. The PS2 had a nice mix of both types of games (casual and hardcore). I don't see wii breaking it but it could get close.
gameboy systems didN't count?
wii is cheap, why not buy 2 to up your score online, if they have such a system...and what about the horders? there is always at least 1....
a chunk of the wii adopters are/will be GC adopters since that system died. This system will fade. 115+ million is not gonna be easy, and at this rate they won't even achieve that especially since the Wii won't last but maybe 4 more years or less.
as sad as i am to say this, i am sure that microsoft or sony will "borrow" some wii technology in the future for their consoles, and wii wont sell as well. what do you think?
I'd be willing to put money on Nintendo breaking that record with the Wii. The DS is still expanding the market years after release, and the Wii has much more potential.
And isn't it time to stop using that Wii=short lifespan argument? The Sony fans spat that out when the Wii was first announced two E3's ago, yet seems to be proven more and more false as time goes by.
