E3 Playstation 3 News - Image 1

After a recent price cut, Sony PS3s may very well see another price drop by the end of the year, according to an interview with Capcom's Chief Financial Officer Kazuhiko Abe.

In an interview during the E3 Media and Business Summit, Abe said that "The price [of the PS3] has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again," in order to address the sluggish demand for the next-gen console. Despite the demand for the PS2 still going strong, and the shift to the PS3 being "sluggish" at it is, Kazuhiko Abe still believes that the console's "installed base will grow gradually." Yet even with this week's US$ 100 cut, the PlayStation 3's price is still double that of the Wii's and is pricier than the expensive Xbox version by US$ 20.

While this may be speculative, it's definitely worth taking note of. We'll keep an eye out to see whether the prices go down again in the coming months. Till then, stay tuned.

i read on ign or engadget several months ago that a diode that reads the blu ray disks dropped in price and thats the main reason i think they issued a price drop now, because they arent spending 800 or so per console like they use to. This is the same thing as mobile phones and dvd players of the past... once the technology gets out, the production cost drops significantly after a while

» Stop comparing to the 360

f*ck maybe the ps3 is more expensive then the 360 due to something call bluray dvd. 60gb, wifi, wireless controllers. i cant stand a better machine getting some much sh*t. we will see how many times the microsoft updates the 360. we will be up to microsoft 1080 before we have to buy a ps4

If PS3 drops another $100 there will be no reason to own a 360 at all.

» Indeed

Well of course. More fans will either be flocking to Wii or PS3. Because technically these two new powerhouses are leaving Microsoft's X BOX; "In the dust" (so to speak).

» Whaaa

Sony is forcing me to pay $20 for Blu-Ray. I wanna be able to choose to pay $120 for HD-DVD.

» XBOX 360

is overpriced. 479 for an elite it too expensive they should be about 250 because of teh lack of hd dvd player, bluetooth, and wifi and cheap hardware.

Sony could reduce the ps3's price by 50$ around december, to boost it's christmas sales (the biggest sales). But I'm not waiting for this, I'll buy the 80g model in august!!! With ninja gaiden sigma

Or I could wait till october to buy it with grand theft auto 4... dunno, I'll see, it'll depend how money I'll have in august with my job.... we'll see

But with another drop, the ps3's price would be... really competitive! lol, still, sony would lose TONS of money over this... still, sometimes, some more money worth it in the long road.

Sony isn't going to lower the price any more.

It's still the same price as the 20gb model nobody bought and hardly andy stores even offered. All they did was give you 40 more GB, Wi-Fi, and a memory card reader costing sony maybe $15 more.

People have been complaining about the price ever since it was announced, and finally after 7 months it really wasn't reduced, you just get a little bit more.

If XBOX sales decline, Microsoft will lower the price too. More reliable consoles with Falcon chips will solve all the hardware problems. You'll see.

Project Falcon is in my opinion the dumbest project I have ever heard of. So everybody is going to be sending their 360s in so they can get new 65nm chips installed. The project Sucks A.S.S big time and it's completely useless to the people that already own a 360.

» to the idiot with no sense

nobody bought the 20gb because for 100 more you get more stuff but is 20 dollars less than the elite an you get way more stuff. an why wouldn't they drop the price if they could they would do better. an 360 sucks is gonna be just like the first xbox.

» not just the masses

but even these third party game makers are proposing that sony drop the price of the ps3 even more, dont you understand business? if they lower it even more they will lose more money.

and yes capcom, the sony fans have less faith in you now! but i will still buy SSF2THDR, now if you can make us fight people on XBL, they will have the trashing of their lives and be seeing 3 red lights in an incomplete ring like pattern.
