E3 2009: Xbox 360 to have Facebook, Twitter, and Last.FM services

A few weeks ago, there I was, thinking that the PS3 might get the Facebook feature. But with this announcement, Microsoft beats Sony to the punch in sealing the deal, plus Twitter and Last.FM, further upping the Xbox 360's repertoire of web services.

For Twitter, it'll be just like having an Xbox 360 Twitter account - people will know what you're up to, what you're playing, what you did, and so on. But the Facebook feature will come with more than just the features you find in the site through your browser. Apart from status updates, photo sharing, email, and a bunch of others, the new user interface follows the established New Xbox Experience format complete with the Avatars and feed menus.

One unique feature from the Facebook service is the ability to save screenshots of your game to upload and post for others to see even when you're offline. Xbox general manager Marc Whitten said this feature will be added to the Xbox 360 SDK, but didn't provide any info if this is retroactive or if software updates will fix potential compatibility issues.

While the service has its uses, having a sizable friends list would mean than your front page may get spammed with "Blah Blah fragged Whathisface on Some Shooter, Comment. Like." Microsoft might've seen this coming, but an announcement about filter options would be welcome alongside this one.

» Any reason why

E3 coverage is so terrible today? I could understand if everyone was busy following things themselves but I figured you guys would at least post some updates as the day went by and modify them later if needed. I'm sure more people would want to read about Halo or Metal Gear Rising than Twitter on 360.

» Eh

I honestly thought this was the only bad thing about MS's conference, everything else was amazing and made for one of their best E3s in years. This crap is just stupid tho

I hate garbage like twitter, I don't even wanna see the text saying "twitter" on my dashboard. I hope it's something you can choose whether or not to download or something, I don't want it taking up hard drive space, not even a few KB

Same goes for the radio and facebook and all this other non-gaming crap they're doing, I don't use the sites so I don't want them cluttering the dash.

» Hulu

I would like the new hulu desktop interface on the xbox...that is all I ask for.

And an open room for 1 vs 100 beta

» I would like that

Hulu would be cool on 360. Facebook, twitter and radio are dumb

Do people actually use these features? It seems to be useless. Just like the avatars.

OH MY GOD, why fill our GAMES CONSOLE with all this CRAP that we don't need???? They're just gradually turning the consoles into computers!!

The next 'improvement' will probably be something like, 'Hey look, you want to install Windows on your Xbox? It'll only cost you double the price of having it on a normal PC!'

Makes me sick.........

» It would have made more sense..

for them to just add a web browser instead of adding these "features". I suppose it just looks like more features this way and they still don't have to provide open internet..

» RavenSPe is right on the money

on PS3 you can get all this already

by using the WEB BROWSER.

you dont need the "feature"

Seriously if you don't like it, DON'T USE IT. Stop complaining about something you don't have to use and shut up.

I for one will love, and yes ACTUALLY USE the facebook service.

by oeusr - 2009-06-02 08:08
» I will

I will use the facebook one, so don't dismiss just because you won't use it. Avatars on the otherhand, those were not needed.

I was hoping they release a update where we can watch youtube videos on your xbox ... not facebook or twitter ...
