ps3 - Image 1Lots of  folks from the gaming community expected Sony to announce a Playstation 3 price drop at this year's E3. So why didn't Sony announce anything regarding this issue? Well Sony's Peter Dille believes that E3 is not the right place to announce a PS3 price cut.

Gaming blog site Kotaku had a chance to interview Peter Dille, Sony's head of marketing in the US, and he explains why no announcement was issued:

From our perspective, this show is all about content. We believe that our content story is unrivaled. It's really a relentless line-up of great exclusive games that will speak volumes to the value inherent in the PS3. Obviously people come to E3 expecting all sorts of announces. We've got a plan in place for the platform. A price drop at the show wasn't part of it.

So there you have it folks, straight from Sony. I guess we'll have to wait a little bit longer for a price drop to happen. Maybe when the rumored Slim PS3 is announced, a PS3 price cut might happen. But then again, Sony declined to comment on this rumor over and over again. Stay tuned.

» When the Slim shady comes out

Otherwise people will hold on and not buy the fatty PS3. Cut will happen when the orginal fatty sell out or close to it or by Holiday '09.

When the slim PS3 is ready I'm sure it will be cheaper due to lower manufacturing costs.

I can't wait to check out the slim. It should be much easier to make into a laptop.

Probably it would happen when they'll release the new ps3 slim.

» price cut

Am I the only one that doesn't want to see a PS3 price cut? I think it's worth the $400 for one, an I'd prefer to keep all the Halo-playing 12 year olds off the PSN. The cheaper the system gets, the more kids that are going to get ahold of it. One of the best things about the PSN for me is the fact that the majority of the crowd is 18+. I'd love it if it stays that way. Selfish, I know.

well, youre not the only one who thinks so. I was shocked with the amount of cursing and insulting in XBL when I played Halo 3 on my friend's 360.

» Rumored PS3 Slim. Funny.

Not only am I correct but 2 sources have already confirmed those so called fake chinese knock offs as the REAL DEAL, Sin and Ars Tecnicas little mole and they say its coming around august to september.

It aint rumored if theres pictures around, especcially since the box is identical to PSP GO!s box.

Look at PSP GO! they changed the logo and so PS3 slim is already true.

Sony denying. Yes thats considering, there protecting there baby. They always deny.

You would believe Sony, if they said the battery life of te PSP GO! is longer than the PSP original, when they lied and admitted that its the same battery life as the regular PSP's.

PSP original had 4-6 hours, they said PSP Slim 2000 would have longer battery life and then they confirmed its the same as the original, then they announce the 3000 and say it has a longer battery life and then a week later they confirm it has the same battery life as the PSP 2000, even less.

Now there doing it again. You guys really get suckered into believing Sony easily, don't you?

Would you jump off the bridge, if Sony announced you to aswell?

Rumored PS3 Slim, hahahahahaha, look around, its already finished, the 45NM chips have been in production since last year, half of the internet knew the PS3 SLim was coming out either last year or this year since LAST YEAR!

When Sony confirmed there partnership with Toshiba to manufacture 45nm cells and RSX chips. Thus PS3 Slim is born. Its already finished. Sony's just lazy.

By the way Ars Tecnica said that in august/ September, the stock in warehouses should be totally replaced by the PS3 Slim and Sony will announce the PS3 Slim at either the German game show in August OR TGS in September.

» PSP Battery Life

Just to clarify your point on the PSP's battery life, Sony made reference to the longer life on the 2000 while using the original (1000) battery. The 2000 was more efficient so they used newer, smaller batteries to mirror the 1000's battery life. Just bad PR on Sony's part.

» Exactly

I hear you. There's still the issue of chat on the PSN because a lot of people still don't have mics, but at least most of them are adults... no offense to the younger gamers, but with gamers under 18, the chance of them being loud mouth a** clowns goes way up. And I'm not saying adult gamers don't do that from time to time as well, but the chance of running across one that could potentially do his part to ruin an on-line game is less.

» What is Sony supposed to do?

..or any company, for that matter? YAMI ANIBUS X, I'm speaking to you: you make it sound like everyone is just blindly following every word that Sony says, and that if they say "No comment" or "No, we're not" ....everyone here is just saying, "OK" --end of story. But there are 2 realities here: 1) If a company makes an official statement, that's all you can really REPORT on or consider "the official word". 2) While it's fun to catch not only Sony, but companies like Microsoft, etc in these diplomatic type of slop-ups and leaks, ....it's all in good fun. I mean, they're not something really important like the Government. And, in America, I think even Sony probably has a better track record for honesty than the Govt. :-O ...But the REAL bottom line is, if you're ANY corporation, spending money on not only a massive R and D project, but ALSO a specially-timed Marketing Strategy for it .. you have to commit to that plan. There's also the competition (in this case, Microsoft & Nintendo) that you have to keep at bay. If you're planning a hardware change that will allow you to decrease the price by $100, but you've got 3 months to go before you can get there.... you don't want to CONFIRM that before you're ready (allowing your competitors an easy roadmap to plan their price-changes and giveaway/sale strategies to trump you) ---all because some 2-bit chumps on the Internet managed to upload a few pictures (possibly due to illegal actions in violation of non-disclosure agreements from the originators of the photos). What, is Sony supposed to say, "Oh, well we were planning our whole surprise marketing strategy on the PS3 Slim for the Holiday season, and were going to strategically sell-off the old models from store shelves in the meantime so that those more-costly units don't just sit around unwanted ........but, hey; you caught us! Gig is up. We would rather loose millions than piss-off YAMI." ---C'mon, get serious. ;-O

» I Totaly agree

I have XBL Gold i deff cant play with the mic on all the raging foul mouth 12y/o's. I dont see the need for a price cut i mean they havta cut things from the system to make it cheaper thats why i wont buy a new one

by Hekynn - 2009-06-07 04:16
» It wont happen this year!!!

Get it through your thick heads people!! There will NOT be a price cut this year plus a price cut will just hurt them even more. So until a slim or a new model at lower price point comes out DO NOT EXPECT A PRICE CUT AT ALL!!!! Just save up your money and buy one I did and it was well worth the value.

by xophaser - 2009-06-07 05:17
» got some good kids on PSN

Played RE5 and their are tons of kids, when you play with them they always add you afterward. So I got a few of them and they have been on good behavior, one that like to run through everything fast. If you have a mic on PSN, more people will add you. I just don't like people inviting me to play game when I am watching a movie. I guess I can update my status.

by Echo307 - 2009-06-07 06:40
» ...

I don't mind playing with them, just as long as they behave themselves, like you said.

BTW, I do have a mic on the PSN, so if anyone wants to add me, go for it:-)

by RexNox - 2009-06-07 12:35
» Yeah..

E3 is a bad place to announce a price cut. 6 months ago was a great time. Like the previous poster, I don't expect to see one though.

However, I disagree. Don't save up and buy one. I'd buy a 360 (all the PS3 crappy ports run smooth as hell on it) or a Wii (if your so inclined) and buy a seperate Blu-Ray player (if your PS3 goes out, you lose a gaming machine, a BR player, and $150 to fix it) or Tivo HD w/Netflix or Amazon.

When people stop touting the PS3 as the next great thing, the price will go down. I have all three systems and the PS3 is not the best value of all (It's second, the Wii is the worst). They should have dropped the price long ago.

10 years ago, would anyone have guessed that MS would finally do something right for once?

» UGH

I'm tired of this Slim talk. It's not going to happen yet. I'm sure in 2-3 years time there's going to be an size overhaul change with production costs furthered lower and finding other ways to make things smaller. But one must think of this when you talk about a slim PS3 model: What stuff will they take out in order for it to be slim?

We already see the PS3 lose some USB ports and SD slots along with BC Emotion chip to lower the price of the PS3. The reason why PS3 is built big the way it is is probably cause the current hardware needs to be this big to maintain everything it has, not to mention the power block is inside the system unlike the 360.

right now and for the next year or 2 there probably won't be a slim model unless they find ways to lower the size but keep the efficiency and not heat build up with the smaller models.

A price cut probably will happen sometime this year, best time is at Christmas/holiday season.
