US$ 400 80GB PS3 Core Pack announced - Image 1Good news for all those folks who've yet to decide on what type of PS3 to buy. Over at Sony's E3 press conference, the company has announced that they're coming out with an 80GB PS3 "Core Pack" that'll sell for US$ 399.99. As Jack Tretton put it, it would have "the same functionality of the 40GB... with twice the storage."

The 80GB Core Pack is scheduled for release in September. From the looks of things there won't be a game in the bundle, but a DualShock 3 might be in the package as seen from a shot of the packaging at the event.

chill man.. you still got the better 80gig.. yours has the memory card readers correct? and has ps2 playback,no?

the new 80gig is EXACTLY like the 40gig (no memory card readers, less usb ports,no ps2 playback i think)..the only difference is of course the 80gig HDD.

PLUS your box cover art for your bundle looks cooler lol.

I just bought a 40GB model a month and a half ago. Though I did get a pretty sweet deal: a $100 gift card free with it. Enough to buy MGS4 and more.

I don't think that 80GB was a good idea, it will just add confusion. People always refer to their PS3 model by its HDD size, but now there will be an 80GB that does have PS2 compatibility and one that doesn't. With some luck it might just be a 7200RPM HDD!

Why ? Wouldn't you just get one with B.C if you wanted one so bad? The fact that they increased the size on the core pack is awesome news , Thanks Sony! I wonder what size the one with B.C will have.

Not a bad deal to double the HD space and believe me, we'll need it! I upgraded mine to 200GB 3 months ago and I've already filled 100GB.

Now, if they'll only make an official eSATA port so I wouldn't have to get an aftermarket one. :-)

Oh, with the video store going live tonight, might want to opt for a 1tb external eSATA one!

who are gunna get rid of your 40gig then buy the 80gig wen it hits stores.... DON'T!! its pointless becouse all you have to do is spend the extra money that you would to buy the 80gb model ( trust me theres no way you will get back evverything you paid for the 40gig version-if you sell it,so you will loose money). and buy a seperate BIGGER HDD,internaly or externaly. its honestly that simple.

i can almost know for a fact that the sony's new 80gb model will increase sales ALOT for the ps3.

When the God Of War bundle comes out (if any).

( The next best exclusive ) . Since the 40gb is the new 80 it's going to be something like PS3 , Backwards compatibility , DualShock 3 and the new HDD 120 GB lol My guess . But for now I agree with you 100%

Get yourself a 250 Gig HDD 2.5 and install it. if you got the 40Gig thats the way to go! Ya wont need space in long long time.! The issue here is the compatibility! PS2 titles rock but if you want a PS3 with that feature save yourself some money get a 40Gig and then get a 80gig HDD for waaayyyy less than $100.

You can get a 500gb external for $99 at Tiger Direct. That should solve your space problems.
