E3 2008: Microsoft not "holding its breath" on Home, not ripping Miis off

Xbox Live - Image 1Microsoft's David Gosen gave a rather stoic response to questions raised in E3 about Microsoft's avatars and how it affects the strategy for the Xbox 360 against its competitors. The one looming the biggest in the horizon is the PlayStation 3's Home, but Gosen didn't seem intimidated by it at all.

"What Sony does with Home is up to them, and my advice is that we shouldn't hold our breath, because that could be quite a dangerous thing to do," he said to answer an inquiry on whether Microsoft is fast-tracking the redesign of Xbox Live before Home has a chance to pick up its momentum.

Gosen also responded to some allegations that Microsoft is trying to buy into the Mii craze of the Wii. He denied this and said that this is not so much about countering the competition's niche as it is offering owners more choices.

He said their Avatar models differed significantly from Miis in that they have arms, necks, and legs. It was also pointed out that the idea isn't an entirely new one in the first place.

"Avatars go back to this concept of a social experience on a social network - [we have] 12 million members [on Xbox Live] globally, and we have a very actively engaged member-base," Gosen told the media.

On a final note, Gosen said that this is only the beginning for Microsoft's revitalization of Xbox Live. He assured players that Microsoft will create ways to make Avatars more integral as we go along to create a system that's truly viable.

What about NOSES, I want NOSES!!

» I paid 50 bucks for more than this jajajajaja

It's how everyone values things. Some will not settle for anything more than $0 and some don't mind to pay $50. Some will pay to play WoW, Evercrack but I wouldn't be caught dead doing so. So each person value things differently, if you dont' wanna pay you stay in Silver.

For Microsoft to truely be ripping off Nintendo avatars would have to of been an invention of Nintendo, which they aren't.

He can say as many times as he wants that he isn't ripping off the Wii if it makes hime feel better. There's no denying obviousness. You copied the Miis, just accepts it.

» exactly

just like the motion sensing on the wii, been done before by microsoft and nintendo didn't improve it much at all.

and the xbox avatars do have noses! ;)

by Arm73 - 2008-07-16 04:21
» Let's be honest....

It's not that they created it, they are just the first ones that had the very successful idea - whether you like it or not (millions of people do like it ) - to use them in video games.

Also their interface and the whole process of creating Miis is fun and everybody can do it.

My girlfriend does not play any game (not true now that MKWii is out ) but she had a lot of fun creating Miis for us and all of our friends.

The real genius is not creating something, but find a way to successfully integrate something that's already there in today's video games and make it look fresh again.

Of course Micro$oft is trying to rip off Nintendo's success, but no matter what they do they will always be just imitators, and the big N will always come up with something new in the future, they are the true innovators.

Don't forget that the xbox is relatively new in the market, and when it first came out it didn't bring anything original to the table, it was actually based on other contemporary systems (and MS didn't try to hide that fact ) like the Dreamcast and PS2.

Every single thing was basically a rip off of something, (like the DC controller ) but they tried to make it bigger and better, just like their avatars now are gonna be for sure better looking then the Nintendo's, but who cares really ?

Just admit Nintendo had a good and simple idea, and you like it and you want to bring the same concept to the 360 and let's wrap it up.

by ISOHaven - 2008-07-16 05:11
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Well put! Good concepts and good designs are that they are. It doesn't matter who impliments it. The key is to constantly improve upon it.

» Lol

I would believe Microsoft if they didn't have a notorious reputation for lieing and ripping people off.

The new menu is attempting to be the XMB without licence infringement (curvey modern background, simplified single line of icons crossways).

Taking final fantasy exclusivity - square are quite loyal, Microsoft would have had to do a lot of bottom feeding to pull that one away from Sony.

Save game to hard drive - an obvious attempt to compete with the ps3, otherwise I'm sure they'd still be selling 360s with only 20GB hard drives so that they could entice a costly upgrade later on.

The avatars could be mimicing either Mii or an attempt to counter 'Home' without actually putting in any manpower, but unlikely an original Microsoft idea given that they said rather than copy home they're just interested in the core of gamer's needs.

The new game Lips == Singstar clone

Also I can't help but notice the nasty tone in every single comment they make about competitors, they are such poor sports.

BULL. ofcourse it is, ps3 will be getting avaters soon, and the wii already has them. they need to equal the playing fields

anyway he right, it aint new anyway

» LOL!

Ya sure you didn't rip Miis, just like you didn't rip OS X's features for Vista. Why don't you morons get some damn knowledge and do something INNOVATIVE for once in your pathetic lives? You guys are so bad it's not even a joke. You couldn't innovate if the world depended on it! Should be called Microrip not Microsoft.

by Justingraziano - 2008-07-16 11:16
» @ keengsnake

For $50 bucks you get a few of the features that are available for free on the PS3. You also get Xbox Live Apartments when it becomes available which looks surprisingly like PlayStation Home but it's certainly not a rip...

The microsoft sidewinder motion sensing controller beat the wii mote to market by 7 years.

No, Nintendo was the first to use a motion sensing controller, sure. They even invented it themselves! Sure, tell yourself that.

by ISOHaven - 2008-07-17 04:30
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Dear Mr. Common douche bag,

As you were already told earlier it's not a matter of who thinks it up first. It more important to actually create a solution that's a hit among the masses.

The sidewinder was a FAILURE. The concept of the sidewinder existed BEFORE the sidewinder itself. Also the sidewinder is closest to the PS3 Sixaxis and NOT the Wiimote. Once again, you have all your info completely WRONG.

So why exactly are you ranting like an idiot about the Wii? You SHOULD be ranting like an idiot about Sony having copied your Microsoft sidewinder.

FACTS:

1. The sidewinder CAN NOT act, in any way, as an on screen pointing device.

2. The sidewinder CAN NOT, in any way, store information.

3. The sidewinder had many flaws. There was NO WAY to auto center the controls. There was NO WAY to determine mid range movement.

4. The sidewinder was NOT wireless.

5. The sidewinder did not, in any way, bring audio to the users hands.

With that said, go cry at Sony about out their sixaxis. No one here gives a damn about your lies or your BS.

On the US version of "The Office" there is a charecter named Dwight.

And, as far as graphics go,

"They have sticks, spheres, and ugly crap drawn onto them, supposedly faces."

Yeah, they ARE the body parts. They aren't supposed to be photo-realistic. They are cartoony.

I agree entirely with Arm73. And that includes your attitude towards it. Admit that Microsoft are copying Nintendo. Denying it because you like the idea doesn't mean it isn't true.

by ISOHaven - 2008-07-17 06:33
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

"Dwight is the top salesman for the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company and has won countless awards for his successes."

Which came first, the motion senor Sidewinder or Pelican's motion sensing controller for PS1?

by ISOHaven - 2008-07-21 04:51
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Probably the PS1 controller. However it doesn't matter. In 1991 a motion sensing controller was LICENSED by Nintendo for the NES.

He attempted to prove that Microsoft came out with this first but as usual he knows nothing of which he speaks. Like I said, motion sensing came out long before the sidewinder (1998).

http://www.nesplayer.com/database/accessories/gamehandler.htm

"The microsoft sidewinder motion sensing controller beat the wii mote to market by 7 years."

And Nintendo beat the sidewinder by 7 years!!! What's your point? I'm sure someone else beat 1991 as well. But I'm done researching this.

"Nintendo gets credit for something they didn't create again!"

While Nintendo wasn't the first (the above mentioned controller was third party), NEITHER WAS Microsoft.

As usual, no one believes your BS or your lies! You're only going to be able to lie to or "misinform" someone that's dumber then yourself. I don't believe any such person exists.

***One page said it was released in 1991, another said 1992. Close enough.
