E3 2008: Microsoft currying favor from third party devs, says disappointed Tretton

Jack Tretton Sony Computer Entertainment America - Image 1When news of Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Xbox 360) going multiplatform stunned the E3 audience (and the people who were tracking the latest E3 developments through the internet), people were left wondering about how Sony reacted to the news. If you're one of them, then a recent Gamasutra interview with SCEA executive Jack Tretton should satisfy your (morbid) curiosity.

"I guess disappointed is clearly an appropriate term," he said when asked if he was disappointed about one of PlayStation 3's much-awaited exclusive, Final Fantasy XIII, going multiplatform with an Xbox 360 release. However, the announcement wasn't news to Tretton. "Surprised or consider it to be something that's avoidable? Probably not so much."

Tretton then went on to say something along the lines of Microsoft "currying favor" to get a slice of the pie from third parties. He continued:

I think software companies look and say, 'There's no check big enough for us to do exclusive development.' I think it's going to be harder and harder to have third-party exclusives as we move forward...Exclusives to me mean Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, and MotorStorm.

To those who missed the correlation between the three games that Tretton mentioned, here's a hint: they're all Sony-published titles.

at the m$ press conference that se dude said after the ff13 clip that link to some how refering that 360 fanboys have ben wanting and anticipating it to be on the 360,wen the FACT is that most the 360 owners could care less about that... tretton is strong individual wen it comes to standing up against fatal blows that can knock sony back a bit...

he's smart becouse you shouldnt hurt or be shocked over the ff13 incident... that shows your weakness and m$ will take advantage of that,so passing it on as it did not matter is brilliant to sony's success.

Sqeenix 8IIIIIIIIID M$.

I guess it hurts Sony a lot because whatever games they get Microsoft gets too which makes it very difficult to sell more expensive consoles when all the games become nearly the same. This isn't a bad thing since this exclusviety is just a bunch of BS that Microsoft or Sony use that usally just hurts the people who play the games.

» Well...

Don't worry about it, Square Enix is a bunch of idiots anyway. Microsoft will never get God of War, MotorStorm, Killzone, Ratchet and Clank, Siren, Grand Turismo, Syphon Filter, and many other great games too.

as said Apeaggedon most 360 owners dont give 2 sh*ts about JRPG's

and I one of them. I like Final Fantasy tho.

by NarooN - 2008-07-16 14:46
» zomg. FF13? Meh.

First off, all the FF fanboys can go somewhere. FF13 isn't the biggest game ever created. Squeenix always puts their games on every system known to mankind. I don't know why they were so happy with mainly putting them on the PS2 last generation, then all of a sudden coming back and doing the exact opposite, but whatever. I could care less since I barely play RPGs.

In this day and age, you can count only on 1st party devs to develop exclusive games that STAY exclusive. OR you can just be like Microsoft and pay every dev $5 billion dollars for some extra DLC or something. Not trying to be fanboyism, but everyone knows that's exactly how MS operates.

by na2rul - 2008-07-16 15:03
» but

wasnt FF13 the only thing that made MS's press worthwhile?

I mean apart from a clusterf*ck full of multiplatform titles, what else was there? Oh some "oh look, we have singstar too, eye toy, even buzz, and some happy family games, see, we've got it too

» oh brother....

I love how ppl here love to assume what 360 players want, with not a single fact to back it up....

JPGs sell just as well on 360 as a sony product.

And for your information there is only TWO JRPGs that push millions of units. And thats FF, and Dragon Quest.

You say stupid things that 360 players only want FPS, when PS3 has a higher FPS % to game ratio then 360 has...

as if Sonys conference was any better....

All three had boring presentations imo. FF on 360 was teh only highlight of E3 and the only thing everyone didnt alrdy know going into it.

» lol @ M$

weather ff13 is exclusive or not good for the 360 peeps to get it i suppose, but i cant wait to hear of all the 360 owners getting the RROD from playing ff13 too long all the while the ps3 players keep on keep'n on

I own both consoles but don't plan on getting it. Saying 360 owners don't want any JRPG's is ridiculous though, there are tons of 360 owner who LOVE both Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey

» spellchecker?

you need to remember that microsoft cares as much about bringing in new gamers (people that don't currently have an xbox) as well as keeping current owners happy.

Maybe existing 360 owners don't care so much about JRPGs ( i don't, for example), but if i didn't own a console, and i'm looking to buy a console that plays ffXIII i can look at the xbox now, which is cheaper than the ps3.

in fairness the sony execs have more to worry about than a single previously exclusive game going cross platform, and he hints at that by effectively saying that less and less games are going exclusive (or at least, that's how he sees it, since a lot of non-first party, or sony funded games have indeed gone cross platform after having previously been ps3 exclusive)

secondly, dude, your spelling, and use of the dollar in microsoft's name is amazing.

by jrb - 2008-07-16 21:15
» honestly?

please continue to refer to microsoft as M$ if you want an easy, quickfire way to invalidate any comment you make, and make yourself look like a social, and intellectual retard at the same time. You seem to forget that sony is a business, like every other business their prime objective is to make $$$$$.

secondly, RROD is less of an issue now than sony's constant bricking of ps3's every time they push out a firmware update - which, lets be fair, is very very often. good job sony. a crap console, with crap games, that costs a crap load of cash, that ends up being useless crap.

by jrb - 2008-07-16 21:21

"I could care less since I barely play RPGs. "

you obviously care enough to come here and post an illthoughtout, illogical comment.

"OR you can just be like Microsoft and pay every dev $5 billion dollars for some extra DLC or something"

you don't think sony are doing this? you don't think have always done this? The difference being sony's console business is, and has been losing cash hand over fist with every console they ship, made worse by consoles bricked by badly tested firmware, and they fact they have to pay thirdparty tool / api devs to spend years trying to optimise their tools to play nicely on ps3 (unreal engine). I get the fact that you're bitter that game-x doesn't come with DLC for the ps3, but really, you're matture enough to see past that and enjoy the huge array of good games that you have to play? *fnar fnar*

Why has he got his panties in such a bunch? Sony is now getting what was always said to be a 360/PC exclusive in Bioshock, and 360 gets what was always said to be a PS3 exclusive in FF.

So what? One time exclusives are jumping to other consoles, it just means more money for the developer and hopefully that translates into more (and better) games for all of us.

I like the idea of exclusives as much as the next guy, because it gives us another reason to own the console that we own, but then reality sets in...not every exclusive is going to remain that way.

by Cydonos - 2008-07-17 02:15

Maybe if sony didn't take such a hostile stance towards third party development and put up enormous barriers, like a multi-million dollar fee just for the right to develop for the PS3, and dev units that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each, they wouldn't be having this problem.

But then of course they just shrug their shoulders and pretend that its not really a problem.

I find it funny how you bag on the biggest PS3 update bricking a couple units. It's not like the 360 has ever had a bricked console.
