Don't Expect Game Boy Evolution Anytime Soon

Speaking to Reuters today, Satoru Iwata squashed rumours of the next generation Game Boy that people had been naming "Game Boy Evolution." What did he have to say?

"I would have a second thought about using our resources on what would be the next generation of Game Boy Advance, considering the strong support DS is now enjoying. The Japanese game market is now evolving around DS. We don't need to do something that will pour cold water on the situation."

People have really bought into the DS and Nintendo doesn't want to release a new graphical powerhouse to match the PSP. The DS is doing a lot on its own. With 16 million consoles sold worldwide (sold, not shipped), the DS is around 3 - 4 million units ahead of the PSP in overall sales. We won't get into the NGage.

Those still calling the DS a "third pillar" should now stop buying into Nintendo's marketing words. The DS is the successor to the GBA. However, don't put away your GBAs just yet as there might still be a few surprises in store. Nintendo itself might localize Mother 3 some day in the future (please?) and Atlus has a few titles in the works as well. Not to mention the movie and anime tie-ins!

» ds == psp

the ds had a five month head start on the psp if you do the math of how many psp's are sold a month the ds and the psp are equal

Yeah, I hate when people bring that up. PS2 had a year head start on the GCN and Xbox as well. Both cases are useless. Launching early is an advantage. In the PSP and DS' case, they didn't even launch that far apart. The DS and PSP both launched in the same month in Japan. DS has currently sold 4.5 million units more there. In North America, DS has sold around 50,000 more. In Europe, the DS is ahead but we don't know by how much.

For this one line has made me laugh: "We won't get into the NGage."

Rofl! I keep forgetting that thing exists. Was it even shown at E3? What kind of booth did they have? A PHONE booth?

» LOL!!!

Very very professional chart you have there #5

and the Ngage... I still cant understand how a company is willing to R&D, market and produce a console w/o any knowledge or experience in the video game market...

How it passed the higher boards within the company to aprove it?

Like the Gizmondo guy I believe... the creator crashed a million dollar car, had connections with the russian and sicilian mafia and planned to get out of the country with a large amount of money in his own yatch...

» homebrew

well, one thing the PSP pwns the DS on is it's homebrewability .

» true and true

I have a PSP and a DSlite and I think that the games so far have been alot better for the DS.

There has been some good games for PSP but the only real reason I still give me PSP time is because of the Homebrew. But Sony are closing down on this and if you want homebrew less and less new games been released are going to be availible to you.

The PSP has alot of extra features so my PSP will properly only ever stay at 1.5. Ive just been using it as a MP4 player with abit of homebrew. Also UMDs suck arse too damn slow!

NDS games are normaly playable in

I bought a second PSP (FW 2.50) just so I can play some of the newer games out there. I can't wait to get a hold of the 4 gb Produo Movies Movie and Movie plus a little homebrew

» DS PSP

I have a ds and a psp and the games for the ds are more handheld like, but the psp has more games that are like the ones on ordinary consoles, like xbox and ps

» Ninty over Psp

The PSP is a nice bit of kit, but its purely a portable PS2 to me.. and not even that portable. Its bulky and scratches easily, if you use it a lot the battery will let you down. Its a very very good machine but not a portable in my eyes.

I have 26 machines now and I play the DS Lite more than anything for its pick up and play value, currently Worms/Yu-Gi-Oh! and Animal Crossing. :)
