Controller Showdown - Wii-mote vs DualShock3

Wii vs PS3

Well, since the time Sony announced the "motion-sensing" feature in their DualShock3 controller, Nintendo fanboys and the public in general have spewed curses at Sony for allegedly copying the Wii's killer feature. To an extent, it's because of the fact that Sony added the "feature" only 2 weeks before E3...And I suppose it was in one of the hotel rooms in L.A.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against Sony or PS3. But adding it so late and saying that they hadn't 'copied' Nintendo looked quite unethical in my opinion.

Well, all the cursing and hating aside, wouldn't you guys actually like to know how each controller feels? And there is such a review. The guys at Engadget had a hands-on experience with both the controllers. And they were pretty impressed with both.

So which controller won? Well, check out the review for yourself!

bad

really awful comparison in my opinion...how they can compare two controllers of different consoles and gamideologies (word just invented :P)
by - 2006-05-14 10:11:08
different

wii=motion sensing, ds3=tilt recognition. but at the end sony was still motivated to add it b/c of the hype the wii-mote got. i'll give microsoft till the end of this year to counter the wii-mote and the DS3.
by - 2006-05-14 10:22:32
you can't compare them

wii does 3d motion sensoring and ps3 controller does tilt sensoring. Ps3 controller is just the ps2 controller with the cords removed to make it lighter which is just what i wanted.
by Archimedes - 2006-05-14 11:15:27
no, Microsoft won't

Microsoft won't copy this design, they'll just claim their console is superior and then they'll insult the motion sensing idea, and they'll adopt it next year when ps3 and wii outsell the 360:P
by - 2006-05-14 11:37:31
yea

The wii remote will be really fun with friends and by yourself for like a couple of months... then the controller will just get borring, and the wii graphics are just a little better than game cube... this is more of a novelty system if you have some extra money
by - 2006-05-14 12:09:44
Agree with 5

but I expect Wii gain marketshare as a kid game console of preference. Teenagers do most gaming on mobile phones and adult will decide between PS3 and X360. If Sony does well PS3 will be the leader of the market one year later post-launching. In that moment all this discussion will be irrelevant and M$ would incorporate the motion sensing in a new and "innovative" controller :D
by - 2006-05-14 12:15:49
Markets

I think the key to understanding the whole Wii naming debacle and the scale-tipping coolness of the Wii-mote lies in understanding that Nintendo is going for the non-gamer market. They want to create something that people who will never step foot in Gamestop will pick up. Sony and MS are still competing for the gamer market, although I think that the overlap is less important because they cater to different segments.
by - 2006-05-14 12:44:35
non-gamers

hey 7, I dont understand clearly how Wii will atract non-gamers, Wii is underpowered to be cheap (for example, Sonic game to be released for Wii looks current-gen) if visuals are no that impressive the hype is focusing only in the new-gameplay resulting from the new controller, I am no sure that THAT is enough. Besides that, non-gamers are more prone to be casual gamers (on mobile) or to play some kind of game on the PC, M$ seems to dominate all these markets.

screw it

Impresive my ass ps3s controller is the same freiken thing as ps2s.

I don't think it is fair to say the Wii controller is better than the PS3 controller. However, if you are comparing motion sensitivity, than there was no doubt in my mind that Nintendo had the better one. As for #8, you have to keep in mind that Nintendo will have the Virtual Console as well, and although Microsoft has the marketplace, Nintendo's history is far stronger than the games that are currently on the marketplace. Other than that, I am most impressed with the post so far, there have been no fanboy outbreaks.
by - 2006-05-14 15:14:49
Wii owns the controller department

Wii will always control the controller dep. because its so innovative. and i heard that the ps3 controller was too laggy
by - 2006-05-14 15:17:03
Gimmicky?

I am not exactly a 'fanboy' as I love and hate every console equally and I am likely to own every one of them eventually anyway. But to all of the people who think that the Wii is just one big gimmick and that's all it is, last year I would agree with you. By which I mean, when I bought the DS the first time. I hated it. I thought it was one big freakin' idiotic gimmisk. Now, I already have the Lite on reserve and I am dying to play it again. It is the same with the Wii. It is a new idea, if implemented poorly, it's a crap gimmick; if done right, it is an amazing innovation. and I have to add, why haven't I heard a large quantity of "PS3 copied Nintendo" rants here after the 'Sony added the "feature" only 2 weeks before E3' part?
by - 2006-05-14 15:45:18

"i'll give microsoft till the end of this year to counter the wii-mote and the DS3" They won't. The 360 controller is just perfect (and comfortable) the way it is so there's no need to add anything.
by - 2006-05-14 15:53:29
sony added it 2 weeks ago?

only a 2 year old could believe that, think about just how long it would have taken warhawk to be modified to use the tild features, how long it would have taken to cram all the extra hardware into an already full controller, the extra time it would take to gear up the ps3 operating system to accept that incoming information and pass it along to the game fast enough to be of any use. seriously, hardware development on any scale takes months. not 2 weeks. sure it's entirely possible that some time ago sony caught wind of the wii remote, but i think it's far more likely, that sony realised more intereactive play was a natural evolution.
by comedy - 2006-05-14 16:16:45
i sort of see it like this

i reckon sony probably thought to themselves 'do we want motion sensing in this controller?' and didn't have an answer, as lets face it, they were going to wait until after this e3 anyway to launch. and then, given that the wiimote has been lauded highly they probably said 'well there's our answer, people like motion sensing and we can deliver' it does appear the two controllers are aimed at different functions, but only slightly. one thing which concerns me is that i'm so very lazy, basically i don't play games energetically... wiimote may not suit my gaming style. also, has anyone else felt that sort of gaming zen where you no longer acknowledge your physical self outside the game, and even the button presses on the controller are as natural as if you were born that way? i do, and i must say i have enjoyed 10 years of holding that ps controller and zoning out, i look forward to it on ps3... (without motion sensing that is)
by - 2006-05-14 16:25:17
jesus christ

why do people compare it as the same MFing control one is obviously tilt ps3 and one is motion sensing by actually moving the control more than 6 degrees Wii anyways bashing it wont do any good everyone knows that if ur a true gamer u play all consoles and thats all
by - 2006-05-14 16:26:15
wiimote

i have to admit i was a bit skeptical at first but i think that nintendo will actually outsell sony in america this generation. a console that is so much more innovative with the ability to relieve all of the classic games and a new breakthrough controller that is probably gonna be about a third of the price of the ps3 is definetley going to outsell it. when are we gonna realize that graphics arent everything and that the great tiltes and innovative ways to play are much more important than the way the games look? the only competition will be for second place between the 360 and the ps3. i own a 360 and i plan on buying a wii for sure. idk about the ps3 yet. i mean come on $600? i think nintendos got this round
by - 2006-05-14 16:45:31
who cares

There just controllers.
by - 2006-05-14 16:47:51
Sony?

Sony is REALLY pissing me off i mean jees, u can't do this. Its called 'PLAGERISM'. Trust me thats whats on all my research papers at school so yeah u guess can't plagerise either.
by - 2006-05-14 16:55:53
shutup, seriously

There *****ing controllers, seriously. Its not a big deal, they both get the job done, and the only people that care are nintendo fans because they are crying little girls who would love an actually reason to hate sony. its a god damn cointroller, they stole the idea, get over it! you still have your little montion sencored controller, and your Wii, so get off Sony. Your opinion doesnt mean sh*t
by - 2006-05-14 17:01:03
ok...

To 20: You write on something you can't even spell? This is too broad of an idea to be considered plagiarism..It isn't even the exact same technology. Let's all get over it, and quit posting articles about it. :)
by - 2006-05-14 18:27:03
hmmmhmmm

yeah #22 and #20 plagiarism deals with the media not technology get your ***** right morons
by The Unbiased One - 2006-05-14 18:31:31
length

To program a different control scheme is not as difficult as one may think. I've never programmed for a Sony product (but i've heard it's a *****) but I would immagine that implementing tilt controls would not be incredibly difficult. And it would be similar to "hit left to turn left" and "tilt left to turn left" (Programming is not that easy but it shows my point) And as for the PS3 controller lagging, yes, it did lag, but that should be ironed out before launch.
by - 2006-05-14 20:07:42
=)

I don't think it's as easy as 'they both get the job done' To the simple extent they work...yes ....Oh who cares... I can't wait to play the next Monkey Ball game on Wii. =P 23: Nice hehe.
by - 2006-05-14 22:53:45
alright man!

....Oh who cares... I can't wait to play the next Monkey Ball game on Wii. =P ------------------------------------------------------------------- YES!i cant wait to play my with my wii balls! haha anyways, you gotta admit, the wii seems alot more different from the ps3 controller. its like comparing a tank to a ferrari enzo. they're too completely different things. they just have 1 thing in common. in this case, they are controllers that let u move around and crap. in the vehicular case, they bought...um...move around and crap...and explode stuff...ok sorry, bad comparison

Traditionally, plagiarism is stealing one's writings or ideas and taking credit for them. It doesn't really fit in here at all is what I was trying to say in my original message. An idea such as this was bound to be used on a console sometime.
by - 2006-05-15 04:01:57
PS3 Vs. Wii

The only bad thing about the ps3 control is that sony stole the idea from nintendo.(You work hard to come with a good idea and someone steals it. That is bad) but that has been going on through life so i don't really care. Coca Cola >Pepsi Diet Coca Cola >Diet Pepsi PS2 > Xbox (you know bill gates don't need more money ) Yahoo mail > Gmail See what I mean

Sonys is better

I like nintendo more...in fact I kinda hate sony's games. But Id rather have an actually controller with motion sensored than a little dinky remote with like 3 buttons. But whaterver. As long as the controller works I dont give a flyign f*ck. It gets the job done.
by - 2006-05-15 12:15:55
On/Off button ...

I think that Sony should have at least left the vibrate ability in the controller. They could have added a On/Off button to the controller to switch between Vibrate mode and Motion Sensor mode. This way the user has the choice to either use it or not (unless a game calls for it ..etc). Almost all of the Backward compatable games seemed to work so much better with it engaged. That's my opinion .... over and out ...
by - 2006-05-15 16:50:16
on/off

Sony can't put the vibrate function on their control because they lost a law suit about that technology. All I know is that sony didn't pay the original creator of the vibrate function and now they can't use it.
by - 2006-05-15 18:37:56
both suck

both suck. the dual shock doesn't have force feedback and the wii controller isn't practical. I'm sticking with the 360's controller. 360 is sticking with reality and what works. You guys will all understand soon. The PS3 and Wii are going to be dumb and stupid. The 360 is going to be cooler, dudes. YES!!!! =)
by - 2006-05-15 18:46:55
All this crap

1. the wii motion-senses and the ps3 detects tilting 2. notice its the ONLY console with no rumble. they were all sued by a company that patented the rumble idea in general . My thinking is sony couldn't or didnt want to pay the royalties do to pried or the lose that they were already taking. with this extra space in the controller they probably diceded to put somthing else in it. 3. the ps controler lookes like the snes controller. no one cried foul then 4. the xbox controler is almost exactly the same as the dreamcast. i'll give that one to microsoft cause the dreamcast ran windows ce and a version of directx anyways. 5. the nintendo virtual console controler looks like the dualshock 1,2,3 controlers. i dont hear enough public outcry on that. byt the way i'm a playstation fan, not a sony fan. I think that sony is trying to do to much for such a simple concept. thats its greatest point and it's downfall. Same with the psp it can do every thing and we dont expct less from it. as with the ds, in my opinion, it can get away with murder. Honestly would you shell out $30 for tetris on the psp? I would expect that the game would bring the processor to its knees befor i buy a 2d teris or pong game for it.

notitle

I just want to say PlayStation3 rocks, so ***** all the haters.
by - 2006-05-15 23:55:31
lol

Alright, YourWiiSucks..Stick with your generation-old AND button-lacking controller then. And burn in hell, while you're at it.
by - 2006-05-16 22:06:54
#36

How is my 360 controller 'button-lacking'? also your PS3 crap doesn't have any rumble. And I'm not going to burn in hell, I hope you don't either. What a horrible thing to wish on someone. =( I've been told a lot of things, but that is pretty low.
