Hollywood execs: Media downloads won't take over just yet

Hollywood - Image 1In the recent Content Delivery and Storage Association conference held jointly by top Hollywood studios, four major studio officials admitted that the industry and the market aren't quite ready to have digital content distributed mainly via download services.

It was also projected that it will take several years for the technology to seriously rival Blu-ray discs and standard definition DVDs.

"I don’t think we have to be worried about the replacement of physical media for some time,” said Benn Carr, Disney's vice president of new technology. "Downloading sales are not going to 'hockey-stick' soon. Every time I access a site and download, it’s not necessarily seamless."

TV shows and hit movies will soon be available or are already live in services powered by Apple, Microsoft, TiVo and NetFlix. However, this group is seen by many as a pioneering act which will capture a relatively small market at this time.

The state of today's broadband technology, according to Hollywood studio officials, will be hard-pressed to deliver high-speed results  for those who want on-demand video. Hope, however, is right around the corner as plans to revolutionize internet service providers are already underway in Japan, the U.S., and Europe.

Connection isn't fast enough for the majority of people YET; but also these greedy execs need to make some $$$$ from us off BlueRay before they tell us it's obsolete...

Much agreed! Didn't a good lot of us just get done arguing over this not too long ago? Around the time Toshiba dumped HD-DVD a bunch of nuts came out saying that digital DL services would wipe out BR. Then of course a select few had to put them in their place.

Hopefully they come back for a second round :)

a movie download comes with subs then I will buy digital movies... but if not... no thanks... at least for me.... anyway it's like games... people will buy downloaded games but almost everybody prefer tangible copies for trade in, book and else.... the same with movies.... better tangible copies of the movie to view it with friends.. not just in your house, to see special features... different language, subs, the now bluray features, for trade in... the ability to rip it if you want it on the go... anyway... there are so many factors that people still want tangible movies that just download it and have it in one console if is in the 360 or in the computer with drm thing...

Anyway it's what I think...

i...don't know why... you use... so many ellipses... it's kind of annoying... you type... like... william shatner speaks...

anyway, i'm glad someone is shutting those idiots down. internet speeds aren't there yet, and won't be as long as internet service providers continue to screw over their customers.

To all those ppl who keep saying the speeds aren't there yet.Know this Comcast is launching is launching a faster speed next year which is over 160mpbs,and version is lauching something even faster than that.Verizon already have speeds up to 50mbps now.I have Comcast and I have over 28mbps running right now and it only takes me 1-2hrs to download HD movies.I've been downloading HD movies for months now on only a 28mbps.Imagine when Comcast and Verizon launch their faster services next year it'll only take me 10 minutes and with terabyte hard drives getting cheaper;their already reasonable btw. It's only a matter of time.Within two years downloading HD movies will be mainstream whether you guys like it or not.

# How much are you paying?Geosondaman 2008-03-13 20:00
Japan and Belgium already has speeds better than the newest one of Verizon and Comcast...so ur point is moot. Check out speedtest.net...anyways, the problem is not with the speed, is with the amount of money that u have to pay in order to get the speed. Those speeds won't be mainstream for a few years, and by that time Sony will be advocating another format possibly, although I think blu-ray will likely last as long as DVDs.

I pay only $99 dollars a month and that's including cable, phone and internet.Again, downloading HD movies are already popular it just isn't mainstream yet. Also, from what I heard Comcast/versizon said they'll launch them at reasonable prices too. Also, verizon already have 50mpbs that

only takes about a hour or less downloading a HD movie and that only costs 80 something dollars a month and that price is falling. How is my point moot again? with Comcast launching 160mbps this year at a reasonable price, and even if people couldn't afford that reasonable price they could simply get a slightly slower speed.Because I hope you do know it only takes 4 minutes to download a HD movie over 160mbps.Also, as I said I download HD movies RIGHT NOW,it cost me $99(including cable & phone) with only a 1-2hr download.Anyway it's time to accept it HD movie downloads are ALREADY happening.Within two years it should be mainstream. It won't kill off BR they'll just co-exist.Too bad BR will never be as popular as DVD.

i dont giv a damn. $99 is equal to £50 in here! But if i interpret that price to UK price, it wud be £60-£70

Virgin do 20mbps broadband, TV, phone, AND mobile network all for something like £15-£20. Unfortunetly, umust hav fibre optics which many dont hav

"you type... like... william shatner speaks..."

HAHAHA!!!! Now THAT was hilarious!

I have to admit.....I do the same. I think it comes from having so many arguments over what was said. How many times have you gotten into an argument will a friggen women over what you actually said versus what she remembers? When you speak you use commas in your vocal communication. They're called PAUSES. When you type you use PAUSES for a reason. Yet people run all your spoken words together and run all your typed words together SO OFTEN that people are starting to use LONG COMMAS.

Comma ,

Long comma ......

Two of the same sentences with a comma in different spots can have TWO DIFFERENT meanings.

Same reason I capitalize certain words. People skip things WAY too often.

@Kingofdaberbz

What exactly is your point? Do you think that when someone releases a new product....POOF....everyone has it in there home?

I don't care if they released a 100Tbps line yesterday, the entire world is STILL only capable of HD streaming speeds by a VERY LOW percentage.

Also, even when the average person is able do as such:

1. IT WILL NOT BE 1080p

2. IT WILL NOT HAVE HD AUDIO

3. IT WILL NOT HAVE EXTRA FEATURES

Streaming wont replace discs anytime during this current generation of content.
