Glad you waited? Apple confirms iPhone 3G; 8GB costs US$ 199 |
Ó
Zounds! It seems Apple has picked today to be a big day for iPhone news. Apple has finally announced the release of iPhone 3G, and it looks to be a big upgrade over the previous iterations of the iPhone.
Steve Jobs' keynote speech was inundated with applause from the crowd as he made the announcement. Notes Jobs,
We've learned so much with the first iPhone. We've taken everything we've learned and more and created the iPhone 3G. It's beautiful. This is what it looks like. Black back! Thinner at the edges. Full plastic back, it's really nice.
The keynote is currently ongoing, so expect a fuller update later in the day. For now, here's what you can expect from iPhone 3G:
- Solid metal buttons
- Flush headphone jack
- 3.5 inch display
- Camera
- Improved audio
- Improved battery life
- Faster data downloads via 3G
- Launch in 70 countries
- US$ 199 price tag for the 8 GB model, US$ 299 for the 16 GB model
- To be out on July 11

I was expecting it to be $399 at least, but I guess I can spend that extra $200 elsewhere! Nice job, Apple! =D
i believe that price is for the iphone-2 on a contract, iv seen it say that on a few websites,
i could be wrong though, but looking at the current price of the iphone-1, its probably true.
Can anyone confirm this? I hope it isn't but I have a feeling it might be true.
The price is almost always advertised with a 2 year contract. The phone would cost MUCH more without a contract agreement. Hell, just buying one of those crappy RAZR phones from Verizon alone costs about 300 bucks, but you can get it for 10 bucks with a 2 year contract.
Marry the iPhone interface, web browsing, and phone features with the fomat versatility and file freedom of the Cowon A3, and they'd have a true monopoly on the handheld phone/mp3/PMC market for years to come.
However, I'm still thinking about getting one of these as my next phone.
(Yes, I'm well aware that iTunes conversion helps cut down on loading times, battery usage, and component sizes/parts, but still, mutlitiple format support w/o conversion and a drag and drop file system would just be dandy.)
Still no video capture or MMS?
Even cheapie carrier phones have this stuff. Cmon' Apple...
contract or otherwise, i'd rather go for a 200bucks plus contract rather than a 600bucks plus contract. point is... the price was slashed waaaay down. which is always good. ^_^
i've never been enthusiastic about the iphone, but for 200 bucks, maybe even 300, i might actually consider this as my next phone.
i was waiting for the ipod 3g for ages because of the lack of features on the first one. all this adds is 3g still no word on video camera or a higher spec camera. everything on the market has these features and better at a cheaper cost n95 8gb here i come the iphone aint open enough for my likeing i mean comon i can set a ringtone from my music
It also adds faster hardware, better audio jack, enhanced power saving, assisted GPS (not available on original iPhone) and a more compatible BT connection. Plus it costs half as much.
Can anyone find a comparable phone for $200?
You can not buy an iPhone 3G without a contract. New customers will get a 2 year contract and existing iPhone customers will have their term reset to 2 years.
