Forbes: Apple may soon overtake Nintendo in handheld gaming market

While Nintendo may still be enjoying its seat atop the three-way console wars, a new threat may soon oppose its position atop the consumer food chain. According to an article from Forbes, Apple may soon have the potential to topple the video game giant with the introduction of its new App Store this Monday.

The new service to be rolled out by the Cupertino-based company will allow third-party developers to introduce their programs as downloadable software for the iPhone and iPod touch. Apple already started the ball rolling with the unveiling of its software developers kit (SDK) earlier this year, and showed some impressive demos of what it can do on their respective gadgets.

Nevertheless, Nintendo won't be an easy foe to bring down. Despite the fact that the DS and its rival Apple products all share touch screen capabilities, the ability to download software into the iPhone wireless may become the winning edge for Apple in the end.

Several big companies have already hopped onto the Apple gaming bandwagon, with both Sega (Super Monkey Ball) and Electronic Arts (Spore) already making their own contributions to the mobile gaming platform. However, only time will tell whether these factors will be enough to make a dent in Nintendo's seemingly impenetrable armor.

Idiots.

Really, that's just stupid, they actually believe that downloadable games, on a phone and glorified MP3 player, both of which have been underwhelming. Are going to topple a video game giant, where a second video game giant barely made a dent in their market?

Neither the iPhone or the iPod Touch have done well. What makes anyone believe that these two could beat down someone as huge as Nintendo, where another powerhouse has failed so miserably? (Not saying PSP is bad, just saying it did a bad job of killing off the DS. It got it's arse handed to it in the fight, but it still an amazing handheld, please don't bite my head off fanboys, I didn't mean it that way :D)

wud the iphone even b able to handle top quality games?

its one thing having a game made, its another being able to run the game and run it smoothly...to me it seems the iphone is overall a half ass product, not doing a gud job at anything.

dont kno bout the itouch though, as i follow mobiles much more than mp3s... i would think it follows a similar line though.

I mean, the DS only has a 70 some odd MILLION strong install base. It also has reached a market from pre-teen to adults. I can't imagine many people thinking it's a viable option. With Apple's device sitting at a premium of $300-400, I can't imagine it hitting outside the young to middle aged professional demographic. Next-gen systems cost that much and people are choking on that as it is. The DS is sitting at a very affordable $130 which many people can afford and see it as a fair price. I really can't see the iPhone/touch that has a very small form factor that I can't see as very comfortable for extended gaming, no tactile buttons and a handful of developers backing it bringing Nintendo to its knees. I think if Apple could release a model specifically for gaming (with actual buttons, a slightly larger/more ergonomic form factor and a more digestible price range) that considering the mind share the company currently enjoys that they might have a shot. Currently? I really can't see it.
