Choose your poison: DIY and software-based iPhone hacks |
Ó
The more the merrier, we say (unless it's dinner guests). For the readers who've been keeping up on the matter of iPhone hacks, we'll be reporting on two recently found methods of unlocking your mobile:The first way is a Do-It-Yourself hardware hack by George Hotz, and will have iPhone owners opening up their mobile. Before you get cracking, remember to have these items handy before heading over to George's blog (here) for the full instructions:
- An iPhone
- Some trusty case opener tools
- A soldering iron
- Fine pitch wire
- An unlock switch

Another group (www.iphonesimfree.com) has also announced that they too have unlocked the cracked Apple's iPhone SIM lock system. What makes this different from the DIY method mentioned earlier is that the team reports that theirs is an all-software based hack, and that they will be offering their services by next week.
The team's contacted the Engadget site regarding their new iPhone hack, and have already sent them a sample to prove its existence. Here were some of the details regarding the team's hacked iPhone:
- We tested with an active T-Mobile SIM -- after the hack was finished and we reactivated we immediately got full bars and the T-Mobile carrier info popped up in the top bar.
- Everything is otherwise the same, except the menu system now has a couple more options. The root menu has Carrier settings where you can select your preferred network if you don't want to roam.
- We performed a full restore (v1.0.2) on our iPhone and successfully activated it using an inactive AT&T SIM.
