New Version Of GTA: Liberty City Stories UMD Patched Save Exploit?

GTA: LCSGrand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories has to be one of the most popular games for the PSP. Yet for those who still has to buy the game, a disappointing rumor is currently flowing in the netvine: a modified GTA: LCS UMD has been released and it will require a 2.60 to run it plus the savedata exploit has been patched.

It all started with JaysFreaky's post on our forums. He was trying the eLoader GTA save on his PSP when the game just resumes the eLoader save where it left off. He's been tinkering with it for three hours and out of frustration asked help by posting his problem on QJ's forums. A couple of people tried to help him yet none of the offered solutions solved JayFreaky's problem.

Here is where FreePlay came in saying this was not the first time he heard of someone having a problem with a recent copy of GTA working with eLoader. This leads to the assumption that a new version of the GTA: LCS UMD has been released where the save exploit may have been patched; hence his warning, "If you don't already own the game, buy it used!!"

Well, there's only one thing to confirm these inferences. Those who recently bought the game, if you're having the same problems let us know via the comments or let JaysFreaky know that he's not alone through the forum.

*UPDATE: JaysFreak has just put up a video of the problem he's encountering. The video was made by RocafellazThug who also posted in our forums the same observations based from his own experience.

S*** tries really everything to block homebrew.

I remember the interview with sony about apple, where the mentioned, that ps3 would be placed on the market as a great multimedia computer....What a joke at all, if you look on their psp policies.

Ok its speculative to say that sony forced rockstar games to patch the game for blocking the exploit, but i think they did so....

Yeah and about the modchip... Its easy to block it with all newer psps and the next hardware revision....

If sony keeps this way, then i only can say: good bye psp....

Even homebrew is a bad thing for sony. If people can get free homebrew on their psps then they won't buy as many games and that will mean less profit for sony. And they are already making a loss for every psp they sell, so selling games is their main income.

# HomebrewGuest 2006-06-15 01:42
Homebrew helps game sales too, though. Look at GTA:LCS. Already a great game, but I'm sure alot of the copies were bought with 2.XX homebrew in mind.

Blocking homebrew also makes the homebrew scene bigger. We probably don't want to give up our homebrew cabapilities if a new game asks us to upgrade, so many people are less likely to buy that game. This just leads to more Isos's and stuff.

# Yes sony is a company like microsoft, apple, nintendo etcGuest 2006-06-15 01:50
I am fully against piracy and its fully ok to prevent it.

The sad side effect is, that piracy kills homebrew....cause of blocking everything...

Its like microsoft would prevent every office alternative to rub on the pc with the next update, cause more users writing on openoffice than on their own product. :-)

Its interesting, that the "windows hater number one" brought boot camp and allow to run the homebrew called windows on their machine :-)

S*** don´t be so rude against talented programmers, which are making your product so interesting and exciting...Homebrew advertises the psp in a good way....

This should have been obvious that they were going to patch the exploit. Its just like when soft modding Xboxes, you have to get the older copies of Splintercell/Mech assault/007 to use the exploit.

Nothing new. Same old cat and mouse game.

Sony really have anoyed alot of people with their dumb crapy updates none of them make me want to upgrade not even the flash is so old!! the sad thing is that even if iso's were never used or ripped or ever existed in the beginning and only emu's were used sony would still be the butthole's they are and still block it. Sony should blame themselves as when the system came out there weren't that many great games released or made and what better way to use the psp and waste time then to play snes or genesis, and seeing as more great stuff is coming out via HB, nobody is going to want to give up their 1.5 or 2.0 psps.

$ony will be pretty damn screwed come ps3. it'll be way too expensive, even though the xbox360 has two 3.2 gig processors compared to the ps3's one processor of the same speed. x360 is a better system with better games like ghost recon 2 and call of duty 2, not to mention the new perfect dark game (nintendo can now truly feel the pain of losing rare)

and when $ony's game department is crippled, what will become of psp owners? For us, the future looks pretty sweet. Sooner or later, they'll have to stop with the firmware updates. Then, with $ony stopping for good, the homebrew community can catch up and exploit all of the current firmwares

when $ony says "Bah, this PSP isn't making us much money anymore, let's ditch it and work on the ps4, which will cost $2000 with its 100mhz processor and intel video card

And lol , psp's 1.5 were sold here less than a month ago and they still sell 2.0's , it's so good when sony forgets about updating their products here and the products arrive here first ( yeah , the release of every console is 1 hour before cause they open those days stores at 12:00 and in the USA it's 11:00 , I feel sorry for the dumbasses in USA who thought theygot their xbox360's , psp's , ps2's , xbox's and their halo 2's game first not knowing that more than 20,000 were sold before them lol , but here they take time updating the products , damn this country is awsome ( except the government and our colonial status to the US ) )

This is sonys plan to minimize the use of isos....

Not only the new games coming out now need the latest fw,the old games will need it too, when releasing them the second time.

The first series of games will be the platinum games....Its the evidence of the tactic.

A great deal for sony.... 2.5 6 and 7 are decrypted. The eloader is fully patched through the fw 2.71 and gta itself.

The modchip will be blocked through new hardware revisions, with little design changes in the psp´s mobo.

And the end is: no piracy, but sadly no hombrew...

If it wasnt for homebrew, I would never have bought a PSP at all... if it wasnt for the fact I wasnt sure which version of PSP I had bought, I would not have gotten a new copy of GTA:LCS as early as possible (which I knew eventually the disks would be changed too).

$ony can shove it where the sun dont shine. After the early ($400CAD) PS2 I had quit working properly 2 days outside of warranty (and it seemed too close to have not been planned), I dont grab their stuff unless I can do whatever I want with it - which includes homebrew and fixing it without paying them more money.

The GTA exploit does not allow ISOs! Sony doesn't lose anything, but sales of UMDs requiring firwares above 2.6! Just let it be. Let us have our legal fun! What Sony should do is sell homebrew capable PSPs at the production costs, if we're gonna use the homebrew. Well... Now the price of old GTAs'll skyrocket on Ebay :)

# Stop with the cryingGuest 2006-06-15 07:39
Homebrew also hurts Sony's funds, not just pirated games. Sony is already losing money on every PSP sold and is still losing to the DS, and people pirating games is not helping.

If things continues, you will not even be able to download free ISOs, as developers will jump ship like they already are doing from the PS3 to the Wii.

hey you gotta remember that psp and ps3 are two different consoles psp sony is trying to sell umd movies so if they allow homebrew then people will put their own movies on the psp killing their "New" umd format for games, with the ps3 you can't backup a 50gb disc not now maybe 5 or 6 years down the line you know, so thats whats up with sony. you can't ban piracy and not homebrew when the line is so grey on a portable machine, xbox tried it and you see how horrible they failed i mean the psp will be hacked but they have to put up a fight, as far as ps3 i think it'll be a lot different.

think about it:

gta, one of their best selling games, allowed homebrew to be run, but is now blocked.

a large portion of the people who bought it (such as me) bought it for homebrew.

more people are learning about this every day, and are buying gta as a result of this.

then, after finding out that the newer versions of gta are patched, they sell them on ebay, thus sony will begin to make less money as people are selling each other the copies of gta whilst sony only get the money for each UMD once.

get what im trying to say here?

# 1/2 Sony's faultGuest 2006-06-17 12:00
Piracy is just as much Sony's fault as it is the crooked members of the homebrew community's. Think about it. There should be no reason for us not to be able to have an emulator on our PSP and legally download a rom of a game we OWN and play it on our psp. But we can't...not because of potential piracy, but because Sony from the getgo had the intention of rewrapping old titles for the psp and trying to regain profit on old games...like "collection" games and the megaman ones.

there wouldn't be piracy if Sony stopped shipping any 3rd party garbage game that came out for the psp and started delivering consistent quality.

# Well.....Guest 2006-06-18 00:37
Sony has finally done it. They have banned the ability for homebrew (Not ISO loaders, just simple homebrew) from the GTA exploit, becuase they fear homebrew, though it dosn't hurt them, explicitly

And to those people saying it does, shut up, please. Go take your halfcoked, ignorant opinions formed without knowledge, and go screw off. It does not. If anything, it served to enhance their sales. This is a fact, and why many people chose it over the DS. So you are WRONG, as most people who believe such idiotic things are.

Proof of this? Well, how's this for proof? More people like me will wise up and boycot Sony. Becuase that is exactly what I (and many others) are planning to do, due to their tactics. I will not be buying Sony products. Especially not their games. GTA will sell less, PSP will sell less, and those that are really pissed off with the stra that broke the camels back, will buy less PS3 systems as well.

So how's that Sony? You've removed at least one fourth (and up to one HALF) of the reason that people buy this game and are removing one fourth (and up to one HALF) of the reason people have been buying PSP's.

You have hurt your own sales far more than "piracy" has. And now you have to face that consequence, Sony.

P.S: Your games are 3rd rate, and your buisness practices are in the toilet. The consumer is more observant than you will ever give us credit for. I hope you enjoy your signifigant bottoming out of PSP and GTA profit from here on out, Sony.

I watch the video, see the same thing that happened to me, and I get pissed off. Oh well....is this the end of homebrew for PSP. I pray to God not!!!!

Please....hackers unite....lol

Fix this so I and future PSP owners can get homebrew!

Fight the system!!!

I also noticed on many servers people saying the video is fake because it only has 1 save. I can confirm with mine that there are actually three saves that show up in the folder when connected on USB to your desktop, but when you play the game and go to load there is only 1. Does it not do that on the older PSPs? Regardless, when putting the game in the system it tells you that you can't even play the game without upgrading to the 2.6 firmware. Something is either definately up, or all of us newcomers to modding were surprised of the firware update on GTA and happen to be making the same mistakes on getting it to work. If looked into by professional modders we may be able to solve this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.....thanks......

i have ver 2.01 and this is crap. i havent put my psp down since i discovered home brew about 1 month ago i will never buy another sony product again.if i only had store bought games i wouldnt have been hooked like i was . it would have been cool if everyone could of had as much fun or stress as i had learning how to install home brew games and programs but sony had to f*** that up for everyone. i was dedicated to sony from the beginning when they came out with ps1.well i guess people dont count for nothing only money you suck ...... all my friends were going to buy psp's but ill let them know whats up so oooooo welllllllll

though most of us arent using the psp exploits for .ISO's, we DO still illegaly use roms, and there ARE alot of people out there that DO run .ISO's. it is a shame that sony must react like this, but in the end, its the fault of everyone who uses illegal roms (me incuded) and .ISO's and the such. in a way, we're doing this to ourself people.

# Blame Soni?Guest 2006-06-21 09:54
Loads of people bought the PSP just to homebrew. Sony is defending THEIR own hardware. It is not intended that the PSP was to play Homebrew or ISO's. So why are you complaining? Because you want to argue that Soni are trying to screw you out of your money? People creating ISO's and things like that (ILLEGAL stuff) are the reason that Soni reacted. GTA:LCS was made as a game, not a portal to play homebrew/ISO's. People found a way to hack into the PSP and therefore that is the reason. The PSP is NOT made to play homebrew!

And for you people saying "blah blah blah Soni Linux wont let you do anything blah blah blah" As I said about the PSP above, however the PS3 is completely different. It has Linux to do what you want it to do.

If you want somone to blame, blame the ISO's and the person who created the PSP-Trojan Virus.

It is HIGHLY possible for there to be homebrew and no piracy, simply because ISOs are CD images. The PSP probably couldn't read an expanded ISO from a memory stick as it has a set directory structure and will ALWAYS check the drive, and a tool to fix that would probably slow expanded ISOs down. Uploads on the PSP are transfered through the system, which is why you cna remove memory sticks without having to unload USB mode. This means that they could easily prevent ISO uploads by filetype/mimetype. Even a check on memory stick insertion will work. And the fact that PSP would lose money from homebrew is pure CRAP. The game companies lose the money, as there paying soney thousands for a liscence, and once they got that liscence, sony is probably done with them. The point is, Sony didn't have to prevent all Memorystick-loaded games, they just DID. Yes, it's still possible to exploit it, but it's getting close to being a hardware problem. I'm sure if you can manage to wire a PSP's memory to your computer, you can jam some homebrew in there yourself, but that's rather radical, no? :P. The only chance V 2.7 has is hex editing an update and hope to god it has no checksum. Even then, that's rather far out.

What the hell are you talking about "sony is defending their hardware and and legal stuff" let me tell you one thing, if a person where to by a sony psp (a product) and then..lets say smash the ***** out of it right on the store's counter after paying it, you'd think sony would give a damn about.. no. Why? because you've already paid for it,you don't see them doing press conferences about telling people to stop smashing their psp's on a counter or making the psp's more durable to prevent that from happening, why? because it makes them profit, hell sony would even encourage it if it would make them more profit. So why would sony care if the psp (a product) was modified by the end user? Answer: the reality is they shouldn’t. why you may ask? the reason is "that hardware

(a product) of theirs isn't theirs any more it's yours. It was your on the day that you paid cold hard cash for it. Therefore you've earn the right (by law) to do whatever the ***** you want with it, smashing or moding it, they (the company) has no rights in preventing to do the thing you want to do with the (product) the only rights they have is to do upgrades on the product or cancel the warranty for modding it, if you belive in that kind of BS because to day thing aren't built to last, thing are built to last until the warranty expires and your forced to do two thing 1) send the product to their product sevices where there, they can screw you multiple times with Purposely defective repairs until you get tired of bleeding from the ***** from the scam and then 2) decide to by the same product again from the same the company (and i don't just mean sony!)which will start this vicious cycle all over again. Remember you have the right to do whatever you want with the products that you buy with your own money, unless you live in country where you have no rights with the products you purchase with your own money. Which in that case your screwed.

I just bought gta from sony store at the roosevelt field mall. I drove home at 90 miles an hour because I was dreaming about all the .iso I have to play after the downgrade. To start the gta eloader I followed instructions to a tee. The same exact thing happened to me as in the video. WTF. I'm so pissed I wanted to downgrade today but now I can't. grrrrrrrrrrrrr. But yes it is a shame. has anyone figured out a solution?
