Most of the French words we know are either bad words or nonsense, but the trailer we just saw from PlayFrance got the message across. Killzone: Liberation by Guerrilla Games for the PSP certainly lives up to the Killzone tradition. Some of you may think the graphics aren't as impressive as some of the things we're seeing for the PS3 and other next-gen living room consoles, but we're wondering if that's because the trailer suffers from the choppy quality of Internet video. Still it's a nice trailer to watch if you're curious about how the gameplay will go.
In a previous article on Killzone: Liberation, we mentioned "stealth," and some readers said "Stealth? How do you sneak up on somebody if the game camera is high above and they can see you coming?" Please forgive this humble Iowa farm boy. What I meant was "placement" and "strategy" and "forward planning to get around enemy positions." I'm sometimes too lazy to look for the right word: seeing Killzone, I just want to get my hands on the game and blow things up.
So go check out this video and you'll see what we're talking about. Awesome, awesome game.

Honestly, yes, I am wondering why it's not as impressive (oh I don't mean pixel count and vectors and textures, if that's what you're thinking, I meant *impression* and *audience impact*). The PSP has been out for a while, so I actually had higher expectations for this game (in terms of the marketing *thud* factor; I expected to be blown away; yes, I my jaw dropped and I was impressed, but I didn't drool). My point is: theoretically and in practice, it takes game developers a while to hit their stride when a new console comes out. You'll notice a bell curve kind of thing in the life cycle of a console, where the best games tend to come out after a while (because by then, developers have gotten used to the console). So, I'm sorry if my biases came out, but I really was expecting more out of this game (after all the hype) *relative to* and *in comparison to* the fragile baby steps being taken by early games for the PS3 and Wii. Which is not to say that the PSP games do not deliver (they do, and I am often *impressed* but I find that while the impression doesn't dwindle, it rarely increases anymore). So in that sense, I just had a higher expectation than most, I guess. :)
As for why I brought in the PS3 and the Wii, well, there's a valid comparison there. For example, there's been quite a lot of bad news here and there about which games are being cancelled, which games have bugs, which games are in trouble... that's all part of the "growing pains" of having to develop a game for a console that is also, in itself, having its own "growing pains" during parts of the development phase. And yet, the trailers that come out seem to resonate more. Theoretically, those developers have *yet* to hit their stride. And yet, despite the bad stuff we read about, they manage to deliver something that meets if not exceeds expectations. I am *impressed* and I find myself getting more and more *impressed* each day.
And when I read the comments and go through the forum, I notice the same thing. Many really are impressed, and many really do report a greater sense of wonder from the trailers that come out for PS3, for example. And at times it seems as if they outnumber those who still go wild for PSP trailers. Again, they don't talk about pixels or vectors. They just think that the graphics are not as impressive anymore.
And that makes me wonder: is it the decreasing quality of streaming video content that saps the excitement?

Thank you for your feedback. I realize this response was long, but I thought it was unfair that my low quality writing would make you leave QJ. There are some good writers here. Please don't judge them using my mistakes.
I look forward to more feedback. After all, I'm not blogging for myself. We're all here to provide you guys a service, so your feedback (no matter how painful to our collective ego), is always valuable. Especially from the PSP readers, because the gamers and 'brewers are the core of our community.

i agree... i think last time, or the time before, for the a Killzone Liberation article... an author said "it's not just a port"... and i was thinking, dude, "it's not just a port" sounds like its a port with extra goodies... but in fact, Killzone Liberation is not a port at all... it should have read "it's not a port"
