Zipatoni's viral marketing for PSP REALLY irritating gamers

The internet isn't just for porn these days. It's also a wonderful place to find advertising, as in the case of this new PSP campaign. The above video is from a blog called "alliwantforxmasisapsp," which features two guys trying to spread the word about convincing family members to get one of them a PSP for Christmas. Except, the whole thing's less of a blog than a veiled advertising ploy.

Something Awful forumgoers picked up on this video and its accompanying website, and traced it back to its owners: Zipatoni. It didn't take a very long time for people to figure out that Zipatoni was a marketing company interested in "consumer activation," and in this case, leading others into thinking about making a PSP purchase. We're pretty sure they didn't expect consumers to be active in bashing the site and in spreading the word to every other gaming site out there though.

Much like the PSP graffiti business of 2005, there's something to be said about knowing the boundaries between advertising and lying. Sony also did something similar with the "We're not Sony, but we're close to them" business of the Three Speech blog, which, while informative and actually nifty for grabbing news, is not forthcoming about its actual connections with Sony.

As Aleks Krotoski put it in our source article, "The most important currency online is trust." It doesn't help anyone if we know that, deep inside, you're screaming, "im in ur intarwebz, makin ur viralz!"

Actually, with that kind of lowercase lettering, it'd might be something they could put on their Zipatoni blog.

This guy needs to be shot in the head. The fact that someone that allegedly knows something about advertising had something to do with it even makes it more pathetic. I would be more interested in midgets shooting PSP's out their sphincters. Sony, you want in on my hot new marketing idea?

» Maybe you don't understand how cool the PSP is?!?!

You guys are nuts!

Are you not aware that the PSP is the coolest of all toys on the hippest kids xmas list this year?

Everyone has one, why don't you?

Boasting the most advanced portable gaming graphics on the market, seriously YOU WONT BELIEVE THE GAMES!!!

With a media player in a class of it's own,. you not only get to listen to your mp3 or wma files on the go at ANY PLACE, ANY TIME, but watch your favorite video, or even LIVE TV when used in conjunction with your LocationFreeTV.

And don't get me started on how cool a PSP is when used in conjunction with that brand new PS3 you you've been dying to get your hands on, IT'S UNBELIEVABLE.

---------okay that's all I can bear to write for now.

-------------exactly how do I get payed for all this?

» Heh, Little Giant in the bg...

I'm not too sure about the PSP, but maybe I should go buy a little giant ladder? That was more appealing ;)

» The Director's Cut is coming...

With such verses as:

It's totally cool

I am not a fool

It makes me drool

I can play it at school

I can play it on the bus

I can play it while I dance

Mom and dad got me one

So I crapped my pants

and who can forget the crowd favorite:

I like the d-pad

I'd like it if it was plaid

I'd play it with my father

Or with a nurfle-rodder

Look out Dr. Seuss...here comes Zipatoni!!!!

Nice little advertising you little ***** ass. I own a PSP and it sucks balls. It does nothing but collect dust and drain its battery by just sitting there. It takes ten *****ing minutes to load a *****in game. It weighs ten pounds. Its as big as a *****ing Game Gear. ***** you and your viral marketing you piece of *****ing trash. I hope you your kids get aborted right in front of you.

» um wow

I can't describe the level of lameness demonstrated by both 'zipatoni' and the other people commenting on this. I mean seriously it happened it is ridiculous and you should just laugh at it. Just think about the fact that if it did have some effect on any 'consumers' then they are gullible sheep anyway. If they wanted a psp they probably didn't want it for that, or the dustballs, or the squirrels...(maybe the squirrels).

» What a complete...

moron! YOU are the only idiot I see here. You gripe and moan about a game system that sits there and collects dust, and complain about the size of it,...and well you must have been a complete IDIOT to buy it then. You knew what you were buying, if your are too damn stupid to know what kind of games you want to play, you deserve to have thrown your $200 dollars away. And obviously you don't own a psp game, because no game takes ten minutes to load...of course when the almighty PSP has to have a ***** of an owner like yourself, then of course it is going to misbehave. And the part about the abortion...don't even get me started....people like you need to be locked up and never released saying horrible things like that. Don't even go crying to your mommy either if you can't receive the truth....you sad wannabe PSP owner....probably stuck with a DS...so haha...

I only smoke weed when I need to

And I need to get some rest pass the ces

I confess, I burnt a hole in the mattress

Yes, yes, it was me, I plead guilty

And on the count of three I pull back the duvet

Make my way to the refrigerator

One dry potato inside, no lie

Not even bread, jam

When the light above my head went bam!

I can't sleep, something's all over me

Greasy, insomnia please release me

And let me dream about making mad love on the heath

Tearing off tights with my teeth

But there's no relief

I'm wide awake in my kitchen

It's dark and I'm lonely

Oh, if I could only get some sleep

Creeky noises make my skin creep

I need to get some sleep

I can't get no sleep

That DEFINITELY does NOT want me to buy a PSP. Look, a white boy rapper that can't even rap rapping for a commercial that concentrates only a rapping. *****s. I bet these guys are DS fanboys.

The ad had a sense of humor. They earned my kudos points for that. If I didn't already own a psp I would DEFINITELY would BUY one. I would prefer to see the cast of Jackass tho advertisisng lol. Like a cracked out Stevo tripping while playing GTA FTW.

You made a great outline on all of the psp's advantages, and functionality. That is everything a consumer needs to know to warrent a purchase.

by PC - 2006-12-11 18:37
» Viral?

not that i think it deserved it, but hey--it worked here, didn't it? some virals(like this one) only get passed around and talked about BECAUSE they're so BAD. i think the best thing we can do is not comment on these on youtube or anywhere else, and just let them die. if $ony keeps this up, it might be because they think it's working.

......then again, with their track record, anything is possible... i didn't think it could get worse than the dustballs. i was wrong.

» re

the DS vs PSP arguerment is so 6 months ago anyway. There hasn't been anything close to healthy competition since the DS Lite's appearance and as gamers, we care about GAMES right? Let's take a look at recenty releases:

DS: Jump Ultimate Stars (best. handheld. game. EVER.), FF III and at least 10 other "must play" games in the past three months.

PSP: Metal Gear (sucks), Killzone (sucks hard) and GTA (a series of games so bad that calling them "games" is a stretch).

Not like it matters, but for some reason, there will be Sony fanboys until they close the doors on their gaming department (with the fall of the PSP and the craptacular PS3...I'm betting no more than three years from now). Want proof? Ok...Monster Hunter Freedom was the worst game of the year by far...there isn't much arguement there. But due to Sony fanboyism and lack of quality releases for the PSP, people love it. Ugh...sometimes I wonder if they've even played the game...so, so sucky...

So...I call an end to this back and forth. The DS has won, and with good reason. Sony fanboys can now return to their teenage years and quietly reassure themselves that Resistance: Fall of Man was worth the 600 bucks for the the malfunctioning PS3 they waited in the rain for.

» lets not and say we did

You clearly don't know what you're talking about MG ops hasn't had a bad score anywhere on the nets. Killzone is pretty fun despite some mediocre reviews out there. GTA you either love or hate, but first your going to have to ask your parents permission before you play kiddo. GTA did for open ended sand box games what Max Payne did for 3rd person action shooter games. At some point you have get out of your inner fanboy, and give credit where credit is due.

And by all means, this is in NO way any kind of bash on the ds just so you know. Just your rabid blind ds love that has you going around staining your pants wherever you flock.

Sony don't get it. These ad's are killing Sony as far as hte older gamers are concerned. Why not spend time trying to make a firmware we want to upgrade to rather than making ***** like this?

by WXHD - 2006-12-13 17:02
» Consumer activation?!?

This very phrase is very creepy, to say the least. It seems they think that we are mere machines to be "activated" and dispense money to them. Maybe we need to start a campaign against ad agencies that think this way about customers. (I hate the word consumers).

by WXHD - 2006-12-13 17:14
» sony wants control

Sony would never do this, because they want complete control over the platform, and this will enable people to do things with their PSP that goes ahgainst Sony's corporate philosophies, not to mention their bottom line. This is why Sony kept trying to disable running homebrew software with each firmware update.
