You won't need a PS3 to grab PS1 games

Ó

pspps3You guys really got into discussing the PSP-PS3 downloading issue when we first talked about it. It's a good thing that news changes over time, or we'd all probably be depressed by the apparent need to get a PS3 to download and play PS1 games on the PSP.

According to Game Daily Biz, earlier reports of the PS3 being required to get PS1 games were premature, as they were able to ask Peter Dille, SCEA's Senior VP for Marketing, for more information. It appears that you don't really need a PS3 to be able to download PS1 games because the PSP emulation plan, as well as the PSP downloads site for PS1 games, will still push through.

Let's take it straight from Peter Dille:

We have the PSP downloads site now, and you're right; these PS1 games will be available either from the PSP downloads site directly, so you don't need a PS3 to get them or if you do happen to be one of the lucky guys that gets a PS3, you can download the games to your PS3 hard drive and then slide it over to your PSP. Both services will be up and running.

Can we get an "Amen!" here? This is great news for those of us who'll have to wait to get a PS3 unit, and will definitely lessen the number of PS3-related muggings in the next few months. Thank goodness!

How the hell am I supposed to have more than one or two PS1 games on my MS at a time, eh?

I'm not. Exactly.

This is why you'll still need a PS3: There's no other way to hold a large number of games.

# HmmmmmGuest 2006-10-20 15:10
Since it will be DLed to the PS3 will the PS3 be able to PLAY the game? If not what is the incentive to download to PS3 and THEN transfer it to PSP? I rather remove Step 1 and just download directly to PSP. Also, will this have something like a DRM? The game will be stored on the memory stick so simply transfering it to the PC and then sharing it seems VERY easy to do at this point.

How exactly will we be able to pirate these games?

What I mean to say is: I own a large collectino of PS1 games and I REFUSE to re-purchase any of them. Hopefully there will be some way to redeem the game with a serial # or something..

When a game is ported to a new system can you 'redeem the game with a serial # or something'?

You're basically paying to able to play the game on a new system. If you don't like it don't pay ;)

I don't know why so many thought that Sony would be dumb enough to only allow PS3 users to be able to purchase and download the Ps1 games into their Psp because this would effectively alienate so many users who have no intention of purchasing a PS3. I really don't know why anyone would even think that, from a business strategical point of view, it doesn't make much sense does it.

wheww!! what a relief! I'm not really gonna get the PS3 now cuz it soo dang expensive, otherwise i'd get the entry level one, but that one sucks without WiFi and the 60GB HDD, so now im gonna get the Wii and in May I'll get the PS3. but there's if I am actually gonna get the upgrade.....nahh, screw upgrading, I'll just wait for a kernal 2.80 eloader or downgrader ;-) then well emulate 3.00 baby!! may homebrew never cease to end

# 6-15 MB? No way...Vipre77 2006-10-20 15:48
Even with a lot of compression and conversion of FMV to MPEG4, you'll never get down to that small unless it's a simple puzzle game or something. I'd expect more along the lines of 100-200 MB as a typical download, which isn't too bad over a broadband connection.

As for backups, it's shouldn't be too hard to transfer those downloads to your PC for storage. Just create an image of your memory stick and restore it when you want to put it back on again.

As for illegal distribution, they could easily tie the game to your MAC address or something. After running the first time, the game becomes locked to your system. Now, idk how they'd address it if you have multiple systems or have to replace one... Maybe you can download again for free and reinstall once you've already paid for a game? Just an idea...

Personally, I'd like to see them offer individual games or even collections of games on UMD to use with the emulator. Free up a bunch of mem stick space and get rid of the whole process of archiving backups. For performance reasons, though, maybe they require the game to run from mem stick? Not likely, but I suppose it's possible.

Out of curiosity, anyone know if these downloaded versions will be playable on the PS3? Will the PSone emulator be on there also or is the PS3 simply going to store the files?

# .Guest 2006-10-20 15:55
Well, the PS3 WILL be able to play PSone games. just read the last news coming from th Sony'w Gamer's Day event.

Apart from downloading PSone games FOR your PSP through the PS3, you can also PLAY the PSone games on the actual PS3 console.

About you're other question. ¿What do you think de MAC address of the PSP is for? Maybe to let the PSone game only be playable on YOUR PSP, not on others.

Well I know it will play them from the disc that's a given and wasn't what I was asking. I was asking that since I am DLing to TO the PS3 can the PS3 then access it and play it. Also, if I DL it to the PS3 how is the MAC Address of the PSP associated to the file??? Huh??????

Reply

# .Guest 2006-10-20 16:01
Well, if by what you said about the MAC that it kicks in AFTER the first play why not just xfer it to my PC BEFORE I play it then share it. That way they can move it to their PSP and have it associate it's MAC address to it.

# question authorityGuest 2006-10-20 16:17
yes that is a good question. let's examine your question for a moment...what is the point of copyright laws? why do i have to buy something i already own (ps1 game / dvd movie on umd) again? who makes all these crazy copyright laws? oh yea... the man does. to control you (the consumer) AND take your money. what does it take to make a crazy copyright law? hmm...cash; and lining the pockets of the ones who write the laws to protect the mans ability to make more cash (whether it be against the law or not) i.e. riaa. question authority sheeple. think for yourselves. free thinkers are dangerous in numbers. don't be a statistic like the narc worrying about legalities. what's legal about a corporation charging 4x the monetary value of an old out of print ps1 game that you already own? that sounds down right criminal to me.

Anything that connects to a network has a mac address. THAT is why the PSP has a mac address.

There's no way to use the mac address in the manner that people are implying.

When you buy it from the Sony store, it writes to your MS what MAC address its going to be used on. Not too sure if it will be a insanely complicated process, but I am sure that a hacker can unlock the MAC address written inside of the file. Somehow.

Sony told the media that the Ps3 will be able to transfer downloaded Ps1 games to the PSP. They probably also said that the PSP would be able to direct download the Ps1 games as well. Media people like hype. They report that you need a Ps3. Sony looks like a bunch of gready dirtbags. Media fails to report, untill later, that the PSP is able to do direct downloads. Media hype! What would you likely catch your attention?

Need Ps3 to play Ps1 games on PSP.

or

Psp can download and play Ps1 games.

I don't know who knew what when, but it worked. Everyone knows about the Ps3 PSP Ps1.

What if your PSP runs out of battery while dloading or the wifi connection gets interrupted, will you get a refund for all the wasted time? Or can you just continue the half dloaded file?

Obviously a good thing no PS3 is required. The fact that the PS1 games will be upto USD is unreasonable though, you can find most PS1 games 2nd hand for less :/

Playing PS1 games on our beloved PSP would be great, though really if it's going to cost that much - for the novelty only - I can't justify the payment. I am also a proud owner of many PS1 games, which makes this whole thing less attractive.

I am sure that this is not an on the go process, you will have to plug it in like when performing an update. On the other hand, once you purchase a game, I would like to think you are allowed to download it free from then on, should something happen.

Once these are downloaded to our PSP, I don't see why you couldn't hook up your USB cord and stick them on your PC for safe keeping, even if they exist in a format that the PC will not recognize. Also, my assumption is that once you pay for a game, you are welcome to download it from then on.

This is a great way to start my week, I was in a foul humour all of Friday evening when I heard we weren't getting a direct PSP-PS1 download service. Whew.

I'd still be slightly cautious though, the previous article seemed to suggest that PS3 download would be available first, and then they'd roll out direct to PSP download at some later stage.

Fingers crossed
