Yee: What is ESRB trying to hide?

Manhunt 2 - Image 1After ESRB president Patricia Vance released her statement standing by ESRB's decision to re-rate the controversial Manhunt 2 to Mature, California senator Leland Yee had this to ask: "What is ESRB trying to hide?"

Yee recently questioned ESRB's move to grant Rockstar's Manhunt 2 (for Wii, PSP and PS2) its much-desired M rating, suspicious about what he apparently deems as a shady dealing between ESRB and Rockstar.

To be more specific, what upset Yee was that the ratings board refused to disclose the details why they changed their minds and took off Manhunt 2's previous Adults Only rating, letting it slip by with M for Mature.

It should be noted at this point that Vance already explained the reason behind ESRB's secrecy: game content is confidential, especially if the game in question is not yet released. Simply put, ESRB does not have the right to disclose such details.

It looks like the Manhunt 2 controversy just won't die down, at least not yet. With the way things are going, Manhunt 2 may just be the tip of the iceberg, and the attention may soon shift to yet another game. What do gamers think? What do you think? Yee "F" off already! Like the Senate ever discloses ALL that they do and the reasons for it. Give it up ... the system of ratings is in place ... it's up to PARENTS to regulate there children NO the Government.

It's also ADULTS right to get a game so the rating is set ... just leave us ADULTS alone to make out OWN choice!

ESRB are not at liberty to discuss the contents of the game, legally speaking. ESRB has nothing to hide, Yee needs to back the ***** off, and let ESRB do their jobs, which they are doing. Rockstar made changes to the game to get the M rating, it's politicians like these that stifle "adult rights". There is a rating system which influences not only the parents on whether or not they want to buy the game for their kids, but also for retailers to restrict the sales to those not age appropriate. This responsibility should fall to the parents and the retailers that distribute this conent. Make tougher laws against those companies that sell the games to young kids, and let parents decide what to buy for their children. In this particualr instance, the government is over stepping their bounds.

# comparison to the mpaaGuest 2007-08-29 09:51
it's funny this guy is complaining about the esrb, when the mpaa works the exact same way. in fact, the mpaa is so secretive that they won't even tell the film makers why it was rated the way it was.

that's how the ratings industry works. but do you hear any politicians complaing about the christian-run mpaa? nope.

rockstar nor ESRB have mentioned what chances brought manhunt down to a M rating.

maybe there are no changes and rockstar and ESRB made a deal, a money bribe... who knows

but the games coming out now, finally

# ESRB NEEDS FIXED..... BADLY!!!!!Guest 2007-08-29 13:23
There is a huge problem with the ESRB and how they rate games. For one thing, they are given a video of the most extreme content. They don't play the game. It shouldn't matter how long a game takes to play. If it takes 100 hours to complete the game so you can get the right rating, then it takes 100 hours. Get it right the first time so you don't have all this controversy hanging over your head! Another thing is that the content descriptors are too broad. How much blood is in the game? How much language? What language is used? They need to be more descriptive with the content descriptors. Also, there is a 1 year difference between the M and AO ratings. However, there is a 4 year difference between T and M. Plus, some games that are rated M shouldn't be in the same category as other M games. Let's see, should Halo be in the same rating category as oh, I don't know, "GTA"? NO! The ESRB needs to either create a rating to bridge the T and M ratings, or move the M rating down and have games better distinguished between M and AO.

That's my rant about how messed up the ESRB is and what they need to do

# 360 or ps3?Guest 2007-08-29 14:56
Was this game ever announced as being for 360 and ps3? MAybe they cancelled developement for those consoles, because the violence was too realistic? Just a thought.

# They try to keep upGuest 2007-08-29 16:33
ESRB is constantly changing its standards based on what is accepted in today's world, for example the original Half-Life series, rated M for blood and violence, would be given a T rating if released today. The reason is that it's not as nasty as games released after it, i.e. GTA 3, which is a lot more violent than Half-Life.

What ESRB needs to to is choose it's standars and keep with them.

Thats my rant on how ESRB has managed to **** themselves up trying to do what you suggested.

# But then shouldn't the rating be correct?Guest 2007-08-30 07:09
If your point is that parents should strongly watch the game's rating, then isn't that an important reason to make sure the game's rating is correct? If Rockstar made a backroom deal to lower the rating, then the whole ratings system is brought into question.

Remember guys, this isn't about banning the game - it's about setting the correct rating, so parents can do exactly what you want them to - be careful about what their kids play!

Many parents make the decision to allow their 15-year olds to play M games, not AO games. The ratings have to be accurate for this to work!

# Let parents decice...Guest 2007-08-30 07:12
"let parents decide what to buy for their children. In this particualr instance, the government is over stepping their bounds." - again, parents can only decide if the ratings are correct (most don't read the game mags or websites). So, is the government really over their bounds to ask that the rating be correct, so that parent's can trust it, and not subject to backroom buyouts?
