Xperia Play will be different from N-Gage because... |

Of course, we all know how N-Gage went downhill pretty fast, so it's understandable why Sony would insist that they are a world apart from it. Sony Ericsson's Dom Neil-Dwyer builds his case for Xperia Play, saying that N-Gage failed "Because it wasn't a smartphone, and it wasn't a phone first."

This is what makes Xperia Play different. "As you can see from the design of [the Xperia Play], when you hold it in portrait it's a smartphone. It's not a game device that you can make some phone calls on, it's a smartphone. When you've got the game keys hidden and you're just holding it like that, people wouldn't know what it is, but obviously when you pop it open it's a great gaming device."
Xperia Play, of course, will be banking on Android apps to make sure their money mill keeps running. "The fact is I don't even know how many apps there are on Android now. Two hundred thousand? I just read a report this week on who's making money on Android, and people are finding it difficult to monetize.
So if you can work with a manufacturer like ourselves, we give you the profile, we give you the audience, we give you the discoverability. We're not asking for your game to be exclusive for a long period of time to Xperia Play, so at least we give a game a good start. And we think the experience is much better. So the game starts with a really kind of positive momentum and profile, and that's my assumption of why they're working with us."
In all, Sony Ericsson is "pleased" with what they've come up with on Xperia Play. It launched in North America via Verizon Wireless back in May, with a tag of US$ 199.99 on top of a two-year contract with the mobile carrier.

Some people noticed in the PlayStation Pocket app in the Xperia Play....there is place holder code for a PSN tab, it doesn't do anything right now.
Hopefully it can see the light when PS Suite gets more details.

you have to navigate through Root Explorer to Com.SonyEricsson.PsSuite, there's a few things in there about PSN
It is just a skeleton for the stuff to be added later for PSN, it's not active code yet.

Everything was looking like this was the phone for me, but two things killed it. It's right now more of a portable PS1 phone than the PSP Phone I wanted, that and it doesn't take advantage of the new LTE 4G network on Verizon. It's a neat concept on it's own and would be great for phone emulators, but I must ask is it really necessary to make your phone another handheld. I already have my PSP and DSi, and I plan to get a 3DS soon a maybe a PSVita eventually. So there is no room for it. Also I don't see that many great games coming out for it. The small games I had loaded on my iPhone were enough for me, I didn't need a full gaming experience on my phone. I rather have a more powerful smartphone than a smartphone that's good at gaming, reason I ended up going for the EVO 3D as my new phone.
