Xperia Play costs a bundle in Spain

Sony has had a reputation for releasing expensive hardware. A lot of people balked at the PlayStation 3's launch price when it was first announced. The same thing happened with the PSP Go. Both of those admittedly expensive devices don't even hold a candle to Sony Ericsson's PlayStation-branded Xperia Play, however.

According to a report from tech news blog Engadget's Spanish affiliate, Sony Ericsson's Spanish arm has announced that the Xperia Play smartphone will be launched in that particular region for € 649 (around US$ 907). That price is just for an unlocked phone as you'll have to pay extra for a contract with a mobile service provider. None of the carriers in Spain have announced on-contract pricing details yet.

A possible price tag of more than US$ 900 is a bit disconcerting, but keep in mind that Sony might not follow international currency exchange rates for the Xperia Play's retail price in the U.S.

The smartphone will launch in Spain on April 1st, which is quite close to its announced March 31 release in the UK. The Xperia Play will come with six pre-installed games - Bruce Lee Dragon WarriorsTetrisStar BattalionCrash BandicootFIFA 10 and The Sims 3. More than 50 games ranging from PSOne titles to current smartphone fare will also be available for download through Sony's PlayStation Suite.

All those corny games I can play on a cheaper non cellphone ipod touch. That phone is already outdated as soon as it hits the market.

1 ipod touch 64gb ($400)

WHAT! heck nah thats way too much! no decent person would buy that, seriously im worried about the ngp too. yes this phone is outdated, i mean its a single core phone (scorpion processor, other phones are already moving away from scorpion processors on to dual core). 528 MB of ram,1Ghz processor the list is endless. Heck my Htc HD2 running android can top this phone (near the same specs in a way). This phone is going to fail and not epically. Poor poor sony they must be blind from all this economy. just imagine how much their hand held is going to be if they decide to go with this price

no reason to freek out yet sony already said ngp would not cost 599 us thaty it was would be less the play station phone is being marketed in the moble phone market and not the hand held gameing market to diffrent catagories altogether

(around US$ 907)??
really???

Please someone tell me it's an April 1st joke.

Anyway, This is probably how much phones cost without a contract in Europe, nothing weird I guess.
but they should have lowered it much (with contract) if they are targeting teenagers.

we all know you didnt read the article, you dont need to tell us. they specifically said that sony ISNT going to be following international currency rates, so no, it WONT BE $900 IN USA. fucking dumb shit.

where did I say it will cost that in US?

chill out!
I just quoted the article and I wanted to through in a -lame- joke about it.
Please, read my comment again.

The article was wrote up to point out how overpriced it's, by comparing it to other Sony launch devices without even comparing it with other smartphones prices which is the right logical equivalent.

P.S. I never comment before reading an article.

Quoting THE ARTICLE:
...Sony might not follow international currency exchange rates for the Xperia Play's retail price in the U.S.

1) You're the ass who apparently didnt read the article AssassinXCV. The only thing it said SPECIFICALLY was SONY MIGHT... there was nothing definitive about US pricing anywhere in that article.
2) Who actually buys unlocked phones in the US anyways? Most will get the phone locked to a provider, at discounted price for signing a contract, then if they want it unlocked they will do so themselves along with rooting it.

Conclusion: No one will have to pay anything near $900 in the US. Whether or not SONY decides to follow international currency exchange rates.

Probably because Spain is the piracy capital of western Europe. Some companies have stopped distributing legit media there full stop, because of the general public attitude that shit is just free.

Sony are probably just anticipating the fact they'll sell no software, and are doing their best to recoup on hardware.

The phone runs Android and thats an Open-Source phone OS.

And then geohot wants to mod it. Whats the point of it getting modded if you can do anything to the OS already!

I'm not saying this is right, but don't even think of it as a handheld console for a moment, and only look at it as a phone.

The average high-end smartphone in Australia for example usually goes for around $800 AUD (+/-$100 AUD) on launch outside of a contract.

Give that until recently the AUD was in parity with the USD, I'd say it's not too far of the mark.

The only reasonable way to afford these devices is usually to get them on a 24 month contract where you effectively end up paying less than half that for the phone.

Unless you're already in the market for a new phone currently, then this is never going to be a cost effective purchase.

Nobody understands how it works? Hardware prices have always been masked in the cell phone market. The hardware is overpriced so you are forced into a contract. The cell phone companies overprice their service so much that they can afford to pay part of your phone and still be able to roll in the dough. Both the wireless and hardware vendors make bundles. My bet is $200 in the US with a 2 year contract.

Wasn't planning on getting this anyways. I like to keep my cell and my mobile gaming device separately. Makes no sense to try and merge them, unless you want to cut down on the performance for gaming. This is why the NGP will smoke other portables (aside the 3DS MAYBE). It's a dedicated gaming machine with hardware and development specifically made to execute the best gaming performance to-date. If Sony threw in mobile phone features, it probably wouldn't perform the way it's been said to as far as gaming goes.

You're right, PS3 games in Portugal are expensive but it's due to the seal IGAC.

Without it, games would be very cheap, consoles, etc.

Sony's being unreasonable again, with the prices.

Let's hope for NGP sake, it won't cost more than 1-2 PS3's together, but rather less.

FIFA 10, really Sony?! Include FIFA 11 for the clients who're going to bother buying it!

I suppose that FIFA is a port of the PSP version
