Xbox 360 only 1% of market in Japan for August

Perhaps Halo 3's lack of pull in Japan tells more of its lack of inclination for the console rather than the game. The latest console sales data from Japan show that the Xbox 360 only has a toehold taking only 1% of the market for the month of August, selling a little more than 11,000 units.

Unsurprisingly, the Wii and the DS Lite remains to be, far and away, Japan's favorite. Even the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion barely managed to make it into the hearts of Japanese gamers. It ranked 48th place out of the 50 most sold games for the month.

For the rest of the consoles this August, the DS Lite got the lion's share and represented 52.9% of all total consoles sold, with the PlayStation Portable taking only 9.8%. The Wii grabbed 22.5% of the market while the PlayStation 3 took 7.5%.

Actually that is really good for Nintendo, they deserve it after having such a *****ty go at the gamecube. I was actually surprised to see them come out with a Wii I thought for sure they would go the way SEGA did, but I guess this will keep them afloat untill they come up with another *****ty console, which shouldnt take to long considering that the Wii has OLD technology in it. but then again thats the only reason they're selling so well because they're old cheap tech. so I guess we'll see another outdated nintendo console in the next year or two. THEN, they'll go the way of SEGA! lol

no, japanese people just hate shooters, it's not hard to understand!!! I don't like them either and I'm playing wild arms 5 and persona 3 right now (not at the same time, lol) on the PS2, not on any "new" console...

Japanese are the same, they'll wait till ps2 is more dead before paying that much money for games that are not even as good as what the ps2 can get.

Anyway, halo sucks, the 1st one was okay, and fun with friends, but errr, it's nothing compared to a game like star ocean or final fantasy or dragon quest or etc etc... JRPG rules!

I dun wanna sound too fanboyish (My fav console currently is the PSP btw) but the Wii doesn't have any old technology. They are new, its just that the technology (like the video card) are clocked at such a low speed that they run about as well as last gen consoles, but still better of course.

its sorta like the integrated vid cards made by nvidia. when release the technology was "new", but the dam thing was so slow for gaming that it was just ignored/ forgotten.

MS really doesn't have a chance in Japan, not with Nintendo having a 3/4 market share with crappy children's toy consoles. The DS has half the market with Pokemon and Mario games? Even Elder Scrolls 4 did badly and it's a great RPG, much better than Blue Dragon.

not surprised about the 1% percent since, xbox mainly houses to "violent - shoot everyone till the end of the game" which a normal japanese (what am i saying?) would find boring or better yet stupid as to which the game has no storyline nor any plot whatsoever.

hell, if they did there research here in the NA. they would find the XBOX 360 to be at least in the 4-10% ranged just because of the news leak on how 360 has that unsolvable problem that forced them to put the guarantee up to 3 years.

There are good and bad Japanese RPGs. I'm surprised about Oblivion (non-Japanese) not selling well in Japan when infact even certain known critics give it a high rating. There is one Space RPG for the Xbox 360 that should encourage sales in Japan (I could be one). Ya have heard of Mass Effect right (being done by the known Bioware, also non-Japanese)?

I've seen some of the trailers and shows some nice features that takes RPGs to the next level. Spent my two cents.

the 360 has been dominating the PS3 in total worldwide sales since the latter's inception. The only thing keeping Japanese from buying the 360 is ethnocentrism, the very reason you'll usually only see Honda's and Toyota's in Japan. Expect Halo to launch sales, too. Not so much in Japan, but in Europe (rudely forgotten by Sony) and North America. Mass Effect will also help these numbers. By the way, those PS3 figures are incredibly low, looks lower than Sony's oft criticized (don't look at me, I love PSP as much as XBOX) portable effort... what does that say?

And people who refer to people like me as "xbots" you are every bit as biased to PS3... so pointing and laughing at me makes no sense.

PS - BioShock is very, very fun.
