Wii, up; PS3, down; PSP on the rise: Japan hardware sales for week ending April 22 |
Ó
Multi-colored pie charts for the win! The above screen capture (click to enlarge!) shows the results of Japan's hardware sales for the week ending April 22.
As you can see, the Nintendo DS still remains as strong as ever, raking in over 128,000 unit sales, while the PSP seems to be struggling with a little less than 30K. The good thing about PSP's numbers, though, is that it gained some substantial ground from last week, with an 11% increase. In this week's charts, that's the highest percentage increase among the others.
Over at the console arena, the Wii is stuck on top with around 76 thousand in sales, while the PS3 (falling back a staggering 17%) is notched at second with a round-up of 11,000 unit sales. While the PSP had the highest percentage increase, the PS3 has the highest percentage decrease. Sony's doing the 1-2-Step, huh? And finally, trailing behind the next-gen consoles is the Xbox 360, with its valiant effort of 2,666 in sales.

YAY!!!!!
Go PSP
one step foward another step back... all we can do is sit back and hope for a good game for all sonys consoles
for the ps3 to lose 17% in sales this early in its lifetime is crazy. im beginning to lose hope in the ps3 especially if it cant even catch up to the Wii.
eventhough the PS3 suffered a 17% drop according to the chart it still managed to outsell the 360 by a huge chunk... and how about the totals the 360 is at week 72 while the PS3 is still only at week 24 (thats almost 50 weeks differencial) and already the difference in the totals is at half a million and with the weekly difference in units sold it's just going to get bigger and bigger... i mean the PS3 already dropped 17% for that week and still demolished the 360...
as for the Wii and DS you've got to give it props... way to go Nintendo!!!
This is bad news for both the 360 and the PS3.
except that microsoft products never have a good showing in Japan, dominated by ninty and sony. Microsoft's campaign in Japan is much less furious than in other places.
For a more accurate showing, we'd have to see a U.S., Europe, or Australia graph to better see their popularity.
you are right... it is bad news for both... but i don't know if it's just me but i can see hope for the PS3 coming down the road, and not for the 360... as we all know, and what the XBox fans keep on saying, the PS3 has no games (although i believe for a 5 month old console it's library of games is good enough)... so with the current state of the PS3 it still has a huge potential, it hasn't even started yet.... but the 360 on the other hand i don't see the same thing... i think it already is giving what it can with the rich library of games that it already has but still nothing... i really think it's already doing the best it can... Halo could help but the Japanese isn't so hyped about that either...
and as i pointed out (according to the chart itself) the 360 is not even on the same boat as the PS3... it just got left behind... couldn't even compare (in japan)... with 50 weeks advantage still it managed to get outsold by more than half a million and failing to even come close to PS3 weekly sales inspite the Sony console already suffering 17% drop.
more than enough as it is.. But more can't hurt..
that i'd like to see too... but it'd be better if we can give the Wii and the PS3 atleast a year to show us what it can do... because at this time it still won't be accurate... let's throw in a couple of months in which the XBox360 actually has a competition on the shelves... i mean it has only been a month since the PS3 was realeas in PAL regions... i guessing most of us will be interested with those numbers...
with the XBox boys showing off the PS3 boys with the sheer force of the numbers... and the PS3 boys coming back with percentages and talks of potential (that's what i hear everyday... those are the arguments of both sides ever since anyway)... and the Wii boys getting dissed for being 5 year olds and about having a poor console but the actual numbers actually backing up the Wii the most.
why do u care if sony "wins"??? they are japanese not american
Xbox 360 does not have a rich library of japanese games, dead or alive 4 and blue dragon and that is it, xbox had only dead or alive and ninja gaiden, and manage to sell 400,000 units in 4 years, 360 will surpass that for sure in one and a half years or by June 2007, with that said when the week blue dragon was released the xbox 360 sold 35,000 units beating out the ps2 suprisingly, as an xbox fan that tells me xbox 360 can succeed if more Japanese games are released for the system, in my opinion sony should be the one worrying, because starting in august, 360 is going to have more than just 2 AAA japanese games, starting with Virtua Fighter 5, followed by Devil May Cry, and what I call Japan's halo, Lost Odyssey, Tecmo may also drop Dead or Alive 5 this year, in 2008 it will continue with Infinite Undiscovery, Resident Evil 5, and Ninja Gaiden 2, and many more, not to mention all the possible games, like tekken 6, Metal gear solid and final fantasy 13 and don't tell me these are impossible because final fantasy 11 is already on xbox 360 and metal gear did come to xbox and devil may cry 4 is already coming, along with all the new franchises from capcom and konami and a $300 price tag I know xbox 360 will succeed. kids may not understand this post.

sorry about the double post
and a lot of things has to go extremely right for microsoft for this to happen...
i'd like to share an info for you though, you might have come accross the same articles urself... but first with regards to AAA Japanese games you the PS3 has more to offer than the 360 and they haven't even really started (i mean c'mon resistance and motorstorm is long way from japanese)... for the multiplat games like DMC japanese would rather play those games on the PS3 rather than the 360... also in an article (which i read here in QJ) that list the most anticipated games in japan it was a landslide win for playstation against xbox (with Nintendo making a killing again).
ur mention of FF, MGS, Tekken 6... although it ain't impossible still it's quite pushing it a little bit... so unless the 360 can claim these games already in their fold i don't think it's accurate to count them as among the 360's strong points...
i ain't killing the 360 but in japan it is an afterthought and something really really really drastic has to happen for it to even begin to compare with the playstation in that region.
Everyone knew out of the gate that the Xbox would not do well in Japan, its Sonys and nintendos teritory. They market to japanese gamers.
What many of you are missing is that, Xbox sales in the US destroy PS3 sales in both the US and japan combined.
A 17% drop in your motherland, is very very bad.
As someone who loves his PSP I'm actually glad the PS3's running into these bumps.
Sony needs to learn, even if it's the hard way, that a $600 console just doesn't make sense. Getting smacked by Nintendo should clue them on the fact that price and games are the PS3's weakness and get them on the right track.
Would they lose even more money by lowering the price? Yes, but it's not my fault they put a PC chip and a BR drive in there.
And I think it's about time more people started using the sixaxis. It makes perfect sense for racing games but then you see Gran Turismo and there's no option for motion sensing.
and no european,
European and amarican are the biggest market for Sony.
Japanese like nintendo (cant imagine how anyone could like nintendo)
ppl admit it. wii owns ps3
Why is everyone rating these one star? reaperchad had nothing but good things to say, same with GaveUpTomorrow. wtf?
Wow, a steady stream of XBOTs up in here. All of your comments were rated low, despite the fact that you guys weren't insulting anyone and were only stating the truth. I hate fanboys.
A steady stream of XBOTs.
just shut your face. It's getting old, Fan Boy. Dead or Alive sucks, Virtua Fighter has already been on PS3 for a few months, Tekken 6 probably won't jump ship, and the same goes for MGS4. Final Fantasy XIII isn't completely certain right now, though I do remember reading on QJ one time that SquareEnix wants to support Sony, just enough to make them win. It may have been EGM that I read that in. Also, you said you got your info from "an xbox fan". Let this guy serve as an example: don't take advice from any fanatical fans, children.
As for me, I'm neutral. I own a PS3, 360, PS2, PSP, Wii, GBA, and GameCube. So don't call me a fanboy, fanboy.
"wii is a novelty it isn't even next gen... its just two gamecubes and some duc tape and a new controller."
Yup, and it'll still outsell your overpriced hunk of generic game fodder. I bet that hurts way worse than your nipple clamps, sweetheart.
