What made the PSP-2000 lighter

PSP Slim - Image 1Ever wondered what made the PSP Slim & Lite...well, Slim and Lite? Some engineers from the Nikkei Electronics Disassembly Squad decided to find out and took apart a first-generation PSP and a PSP-2000, to check what's the difference aside from the revised UMD mechanism.

After taking apart the first-generation PSP (with a little difficulty), they started to undo the PSP Slim, and discovered that it was easier to take apart compared to its predecessor. "The PSP-2000 probably is easy to put together, and its production efficiency may be higher than that of the old PSP," one of the engineers said.

Also, compared to the old PSP, the PSP-2000's LCD module was not fixed by a metal plate, which is one of the reasons for its lightness.

Aside from the missing metal plate, the new PSP Slim also didn't have the metal chassis the that the old PSP has. The total weight of this metal chassis contributes about 8% of the total weight of the first PSP.

There's also another revision that gave the PSP Slim it's noticeable weight loss. The old PSP has two layers of molding the protects the portable console, with a transparent resin layer to protect the LCD. On the other hand, the PSP Slim only has a single layer monochromatic molding, with a separate resin plate embedded at the top.

The above changes certainly did a lot in slimming down Sony's handheld, but what about its durability? Only time will tell.

I find it interesting. More so then the newest screenshots of a game, or the week in releases, or even something about Atari's new plan for whatever.

» Slim will be rubbish

I can see this falling apart quickly.

» Invisble Shield

Anyone applied one of these to the slim yet? I ordered mine a few days ago once I saw they were in stock at sheildzone. I've had one on my mp3 player for 3 years and that protective layer doesn't have a single scratch on it.

The slim's screen is weird, it dips down slightly and it's kind of hard to apply the cover without bubbles around the edges.

At least I think that's what you meant if not, well, whatever.

that explains why the fat PSP can resist so many accidental drops yay!

But wouldn't the weight make it fall faster?

@God0fGod:

"But wouldn't the weight make it fall faster?"

You certainly aren't good with physics. Everybody should know that an object, be it any weight, falls just as fast as another. Go ahead, test it with Slim and PSP-1000. ;)

@Sr_Moska: I broke my first PSP by just basically dropping the unit. The power light just blinked for a half a second every time I turned it on.

I sticking with my fat psp, I going to try to mod 64MB on it.

yes you moron they will fall at exactly the same time. whether its a coin or a boulder.

One of the most weight difference between the 2 PSPS is the battery .

you were in space, on the moon rather, with no air at all, and you dropped a penny and a bowling ball, then would both hit the moons surface at the same time, as long as they were dropped at the same height. ever hear of galileo? hope i spelled his name right.

by noshoes84 - 2007-09-20 12:02
» @ Act 2

Yes. You are correct. If we were on the moon and there were no other factors they would land at the same time. However, seeings that we are indeed on Earth (I think) there are other determining factors such as aerodynamics, that will effect the speed of decent. If this were not the case a penny could indeed kill someone if it hit them on the head after being tossed from a great height. But, due to air pressure and various other factors, as I stated, it will simply flutter around like a feather, whilst the psp crashes through a car windshield. That was my point. Yes, I do know who Galileo was And your spelling is correct. :)

Weight doesn't affect falling speed

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-09-21 04:55
» to clarify....

An object the same size will fall at the same rate, because the wind resistance is the same. It is not affected by weight. The PSP slim isn't that much slimmer than the fat PSP. If it turns and falls differently, that can affect the falling rate because that can affect the wind resistance.

Because knowing is half the battle! Go Joe!

» no slim for me

I think the new slim PSP is poorly made. I'd prefer metal components over plastic any day. It's obvious sony was going for a cost (and homebrew) reduction, not feature improvments.

User mode homebrew sucks.

The slim's UMD drive is crap, no slot to hold the disc even.

The TV out isn't very useful and you need a component cable to view games?

With the smaller size and new 333 mhz games I'm wondering if it will have overheating problems.

The only positive things I like about the slim is USB charging, increased battery life, and the 64MB ram (although games won't even use 32MB of it.)
