Video Game Voters Network banner - Image 1

In response to the looming legal threat over the video game industry, Entertainment Software Association's Video Game Voters Network (VGVN) has set up a website specifically for the purpose of dissuading the California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, from appealing his debunked bill. The bill in question aims to restrict violent video game sales to children and post a hefty fine of US$ 1,000 upon violation but it was ruled out as unconstitutional by U.S. District Judge Roland Whyte.

The website, which can be found in www.videogamevoters.org, will let California residents fill out a pre-written form letter that will be addressed to the California governor, asking him to withdraw his appeal, which has not been filed as of the moment. Concerned California residents only need to provide their e-mail, name and address to join the cause. To make the process as easy as pie, VGVN's website includes some pointers on what to write to Schwarzenegger.

This might be quite persuasive, yes? Only time will tell if it will indeed make the Governator change his mind.

I can't believe this. Citizens in the People's Republic of California, you have more to worry about in terms of laws invading your privacy than a silly little game law targetted at stores. However, I guess you can expect as much when you live in a nanny-state.

Just look at all those third world countries. No games just violence. For people to think that video games is such a factor in violence boggles my mind. In fact I think it decreases it. Instead of being outside influenced by the real world of hate and violence they stay in home away from all that crap and they have a way of fanning out their aggression

I must admit, to the last two posts. Violence is not VIDEO GAMES! It's american media, duh. The news media always talking about kills and terrorist activity and such. Furthermore, the Entertainment industry (#1 exporter of America) is LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. Hollywood anyone? That Arnold moron, he was in a violent movies...that is so ironic. They should focus on media and stop provoking the public to do violent things, by STOP TALKING ABOUT WAR AND ETC! If thats it not, then its stupid americans who are easily persuaded to do anything.

ITS NOT VIDEO GAMES! STOP MAKING IT A SCAPEGOAT!

One of the greatest movies I saw as a kid was Predator and Terminator. Arnold made those movies so brutal and violent it was fun to watch. Those were great experiences. Right now I am typing this and still haven't killed anyone in the real world. Take away my games, and I might!

if he is fighting to stop violant video games to be sold to kids then i agree depending on the age of the child,16 i would say is a good age just like smoking in the uk.

if he is trying to ban all violant video games for all ages i think he should get to f*£k.

i'll be back..........not

I will not state any opinions on this bill since I have not read it, but I feel the urge to say 2 things:

1. Several children's cartoons are at least as violent as video games, and have been just as violent before video games first existed. Keeping children away from violent video games will not stop them from being exposed to violence.

2. After handling various military weapons in the Terminator movies, and actually acting with a child in the second Terminator movie as well, the fact that Arnold is opposing young people being exposed to violence is somewhat ironic. If anything playing video games has been an outlet for my violent tendencies where nobody gets hurt.

i didnt know you had to fight people to literally survive. wow, and all this time i thought the fighting in the east was just over thousands of years of religious oppression and persecution, and something to do with an area of land that God had told the jews they owned while Allah (the same god as christians and jews worship) told the muslims it was their land. who knew, they only fight to survive, not because they let blind faith get the better of them.

and youre also telling me that violent video games make people wanna fight? omg, another priceless nugget of information, someone get this guy a pulitzer already!

hold on, lets go back to reality...violent video games dont make people violent any more than sports video games make you an athlete. some of you people have no common sense.

what's wrong with making sure children dont get their hands on violent video games... the reason they are rated M is so kids dont get them. Games like GTA and Manhunt should definitely never be played by children. The psychological effect of violent video games on children has been 100% proven time and again, and people who say look at me, I'm not hurt by it are not considering the difference in realism between todays video games when played by a 6/7 year old, compared to games from 2000 or earlier that were more fake looking and did not instill the same desensitization that todays games do.

I'm over 18, so I face no problems when buying games, but I remember them talking about this bill when I was 13 and it just disgusted me. I don't think the government has the right to take away games from kids. You'd have to be blind to not see that it's not doing any harm. With the proportion of the population that plays violent video games, there'd be killings every hour upon the hour if it were as bad as they say.

# video games made violence....Guest 2007-08-11 12:05
sdf no...Just no. video games do not make people violent. In fact. Video games came to be around a relatively new time of peace in the world. You say you could kill someone because you saw it done in a game??? Wow, you have serious problems to deal with. Normal people can show restraint on their homicidal urges based on pixels on a screen. Murder is no joke and takes some serious lack in morals to perform. There has been violence in the world since the dawn of time. If you want something to make you violent, go read the bible. That book has so much imitate able violence we may as well pass a ban on Christianity while we are at it...

# video games of the pastGuest 2007-08-11 12:19
they werent violent? didnt look very realistic? have we all forgoted mortal combat already? i was playing that came when i was like 4 or 5. it never made me want to light someone on fire, cut their head off and scream for victory. the problem that causes violence is irrisponsible parents. if your twelve year old walks to gamestop with 52 dollars and buys grand theft auto (which is already illigal to do since you cant sell games to underaged people without an adult) then its your fault. if you took them to the store to buy it then its your fault for not looking into the game and see that (oh this game involves prostitution murder and theft maybe timmy shouldnt play because it goes against this families moral values)

sewing the company for a parents neglect is just retarded. get off your asses and stop letting tv baby sit your child.

Just fyi Andrew, I was playing Mortal Kombat (Yes, spelled with a "K") when I wasn't even in grade school, and I am currently an A Honor Roll student. Also, I have NEVER heard from ANY source that violent video games truly have a psychological effect on children. Personally, I feel that Arnold may just be trying to appeal to his audience, to gain more supporters, but that's a possible opinion of mine, not necessarily anyone else's.

the weird thing about the gov is that they constantly believe that violent video games are the reason for growing homicide rates around the u.s THEY ARE NOT heck i could kill half my class from playing GTA and the likes but i show restraint(and im not a nutter). only psycopaths kill people because of playing video games.

# what's wrong with restriction to minors?Guest 2007-08-13 04:45
I am a gamer. Always been a gamer. But i don't see what is wrong with restricting rental or sales of violent games to young children? If a game is rated Teen, then you have to be at least a teenager. If rated M, then you have to be 17 to rent or buy. However, there was nothing suggesting that a parent cannot buy or rent a game for their own child not of age. It still can be up to the parents to decide. What is wrong with that?? This will become like the movie restriction system.

I believe this bill will protect gamers not hurt them.
