Virtools engine package at work

Last week, we had a report about Virtools and how the package is actually helping developers. In case you don't have an idea what this engine is, Virtools PSP solution package combines 3D graphical and text scripting, GUI's, debug tools as well as API's.

The amazing thing about it is the drag-and-drop interface that provides developers a preview window of what they're doing, in real time.
Well, we knew that it was quite complicated to explain back then and even now. Developing a game, after all, is no easy task. If it is, then the charm of the homebrew scene will be gone in an instant.

Anyway, to help you better understand why Virtools is a good dev tool, we're sharing with you this clip. It is a short video showing the visual programming of 3D games and the result played on the PSP. Lastly, we were wondering if you guys have any idea what upcoming game is depicted in the video.

Oh, man... If all homebrew were like that...

Many good projects could be improved with this tool.

Also, they could AT LAST make a good homebrew FPS game (aside PSPDungeos) with Virtools like PSP-Unreal Tournament, PSP-QuakeIIIArena or PSPHalo. :)

All i have to say is WOW. if i was a developer, i would pay thousands for this. (yah right) but the QUALITY of those demo'd games is unreal. i can see fighting games, car games, RPG's!!!! being made with this.

Is this for commercial use only or is it gonna be for homebrewers? if it is commercial only, then its a matter of time before we get a pirated/leaked copy. and boy howdy, we will see some AMAZING homebrew games. most suck as is...cheap GFX anyways. but this would make the PSP open up wider than ever. imagine how many homebrewers will REMAKE popular games? it seems with these tools you could literally remake friggin MARIO 64 or even the first RESIDENT EVIL. i was in a crap mood and this for some reason just made me happy as shiz.

The 3rd game's objects were... Killzone's???

Can they actually attach other games' objects and sprites into homebrew (not GBA ones like they do)???

"i promise i'm going to be a psp 3D developper so i can mke some deasent games"

You might want to learn to spell before you become a 3d developer, bud.

And by the looks of the program, it's a bit harder to understand than "drag and drop".

you can see the official news at:

Virtools is a dassault company ans it's not laught!!!

# indeed...Guest 2006-12-13 01:45
...but the dev kit costs money. And wirtools does not come bundled with managed multiplayer connectivity. At least not in the base package.

Also, developing (as you can see from the video) is done not on a real psp but on the dev one (you can get a glimpse of the connection cable).

"Virtools dev" is an developement environment,it work with ressources called "building blocks(BB)" (you can create BB with virtools sdk), the result is a composition (*.cmo). This composition can be read with "virtools player", "virtools office"...

There are certainly a virtools player for PSP!!!

I don't know where virtools use the PSP sdk but it's logical that it's necessary to develloped game with "Virtools Dev" otherwise virtools is sworn enemy of sony!!!

nota bene: virtools = dassault and dassault is friendly with microsof bur microsoft and sony....

the first game shown is one of the demo scenes that comes with virtools dev as an example. the second game i've never seen before, i'm assuming they made it for the GDC talk. the third one is a demo they'd been showing for the psp kit ever since they started.

virtools got bought by dassault (big 3d software company for aerospace/hardware) sometime in the last year, and since then have not said anything about the psp kit, though i did still see it at their trade show booth in august :P

the software isn't cheap (~9k), and you need a psp dev kit currently to use it

# little info i seeGuest 2006-12-13 04:32
If you look at the registration process you need to send your game-design docs - so I am not sure if you are allowed to buy a dev kit just for building up the competency.

Sony says that you need at least to burn several 10k discs - so its not for niche products with only a few hundred or thousand units.

So it looks like you need

- DEV

- PSP DEV extension

- code warrior (for custom BBs, Manager extensions? building the player?)

- a game design doc that fits Sony's criteria

- intention to produce at least several 10k units

- Sony PSP dev kit

- (several published games in the portfolio?)

which is a bit of a shame, because it is feasible for 1-3 people to make a reasonably interesting game concept in virtools

only game i saw in the virtools dev forums was http://www.twelvegames.com/crashdummy/ & http://www.twelvegames.com/crashdummy/PSP_BossLevel.wmv

but it uses http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/overview.jsp?nodeId=0127268507748218293031 by codewarrior as its back-end, and codewarrior uses the official psp-sdk as far as i can tell.

soooo.. yea, its an expensive toy at this point :P

Do you think that the price of license for this tool will be in the range of the average home developer? The fact that you have to go through a process which requires the name of your company and game design first doesn't exactly it seem that it is within the reach of a home developer.

Not to mention it looks like you need the full PSP devkit and SDK to play/test the applications you create with it.

"most suck as is...cheap GFX anyways" - making homebrew games are hobbies for the devs and even the 'crappy looking ones' take hours/days to make.

But yeah this would be a cool thing for devs to use.

But well start seeing more 3d homebrew

What do the developers use to develope psp games? Is it something that is possible to be done by a small design team? If you can program for a pc, is there much of a transition to psp.

Why, why, why is everyone downloading this illegally when they have absolutely no idea what this is for and who it is for.

This for commercial developers you have the offical SN Systems Dev Kit and Dev Hardware to run it on.

This is NOT for people who have next to no idea on how to develop or people who are expecting to make full games in a day.

In short. This is not for home development. Period.
