Video of PS1 Emulator at Sony's E3 Press Conference

PSONEWell, we'd like to show you the video of the Sony PS1 Emulator on the PSP. Right now, it shows the PSP running Ridge Racer, one of the first PS1 titles. And although it ran it in a letterbox format, what was interesting was that the screen size could be adjusted to fit the whole screen. And the game ran perfectly.

Also, it shows the PS1 game being directly booted from the Memory Stick. That's right, there isn't a seperate icon for the emulator in the firmware! This could mean that the games released for the PSP might be modified a little. Although it's just a speculation, I wouldn't be surprised if perhaps the textures are enhanced a bit. Plus a few things like removing support for the second analog controller and shoulder buttons.

It was announced that PS1 games could be bought online using a "Playstation Card", essentially a snazzy pre-paid card which would be sold in denominations, upwards of $50.

» So, it's seen the light of day?

Did they make any mention of when it would be launched? This summer? In the fall? I believe there was supposed to be one more update before the GPS and eye toy accessories are released. Does that mean that puts us somewhere around July?

» #7 your dumb read the review...

anyway i would rather have a homebrew emulator so i can still play snes n64 game boy nes mega drive master system ect... lol

by Juan - 2006-05-10 00:48
» ugh...

It's a PSP official emulator so no it will probably require an update to like 3.0, so yes you will still have flash.

It looks really nice, I would get it if 3 games were made for it: Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Star Ocean: the Second Story.

by erik - 2006-05-10 00:55
» heh

well atleast the new firmware will have something for people who buy a new psp... I wouldnt upgrade my psp for that.. where are the half life 2 hackers who leaked that game. we need some one to leak this and make it aviable on the 1.5 firmware = p

Look at the upper right corner while he's playing ridge racer, its curved! Also his fingers pressing the buttons dont match with the onscreen gameplay.... We're being tricked I tell ya!

It's all fake! Our only hope is a PS1 Emu homebrew!

by Lock*****er - 2006-05-10 01:22

... loco rocco, that is a signed eboot, that will only run on 2.7 firmware, so, give it up,

we will never be able to played on other firmwares (until someone gets the key from sony),

for now:

Chrono Trigger > Chrono Cross

by jimmy the kid - 2006-05-10 01:28
» but which ones?

how will Sony determine which games get converted into PSP compatible ones? I want Destruction Derby and Warhawk along with other old titles, not originals of the remakes that PSP already has (Ridge Racer)

by drumstick - 2006-05-10 01:39

Tomb Raider 1 & 2 on psp at last! It would've been nice if they'd bundled the first TR up with TR Legend that's coming soon but that's too much to ask I suppose.

FAke written all over it lol. seriously, this is awesome news. The first ever ps1 emulator offically supported by SONY. Aint that great!!!?

by jovanni - 2006-05-10 02:07
» sonys plans!!!!!

sony will make sure that you upgrade to 3.0 they'll start with some good classics then, higher the prices for the games u really want ."screwed"...i'll stick to my 1.5 all my emus with over 400 games!!!and,by the time it really looks interesting we'll se it hacked and ready to go on 1.5 "FREE!!!"..theres always a way to get sony back for overchargn' us for there electronics:)

by celvin - 2006-05-10 02:08
» Do you think we have to upgrade for this?

I'm hoping there's a work-around for this. I'll happily pay good money to play titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics on my PSP, but I refuse to upgrade it dammit!

by R Kelly - 2006-05-10 02:16
» haha

I was joking about asking if it worked on 2.7... everytime i read the comments section atleast 15 *****s ask..does it work on 2.6?? in rapid succession and its annoying..2.7 is for douchebags and people that just got a psp..

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-05-10 02:17
» How about?

How about the games on the PS1 that required 2 joysticks or the L2 and R2 buttons? How're they going to substitute that into the game? Or are they not releasing the games that require that or somehow modifying the game to where it just needs all the controls from the PSP. Looks good though, ran very smooth.

by Nathan - 2006-05-10 02:18
» Well..

I'd pay them AGAIN for a game I already own (Final Fantasy Tactics), but damned if I'll upgrade to 1.5.

Hell, there are a lot of current PSP games I'd buy, if they worked with the loader.

Don't they realize that people who steal games, will anyway... and that blocking people from playing homebrew only hurts potential sales? I'd imagine not..

But yeah, overall PS does have alot of good titles, so..why not.

» Is this a FW1.5 PSP the guy is using?

If you see the bootup screen -- yes I am half blind :) -- it appears to only have the PSP logo (it doesnt say Playstation Portable underneath it). This would indicate a 1.00 or 1.50 firmware. Can anyone confirm this? If so, it might be anything this guy is running.

by Jai - 2006-05-10 03:57
» Got your point

Mitch we got your point, if you dont want to use the emulator then dont, nobosy is forcing you. And u are a complete idiot if you think the sony will sell s1 games for £30! will be £10, maybe £15 max! If you dont wanna use it then dont, but please dont come here and start crying over it.

I for one will be looking forward to the emulator.

by psp jedi - 2006-05-10 03:58
» be serious

I cant believe some of u saying u would rather stick with your nes and snes/ gen homebrew emulation versus playstation emulation...i'd pay a few bucks for perfecty running games that automatically boot up rather than having to run an eloader or xploit. the eloader was cool but i hated having to load up gta..then load a game save then load up a snes game or homebrew app . snes games didnt even run smooth......................yall on crack or what.... basically just like the podcast guy said on his eval of firmware 2.7 , sony is gonna update the firmware so often with even more goodies each time ..conformity to sonys standards will be imminent.

by whatever - 2006-05-10 04:01

Xenogears, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8, Chrono Cross, Metal Gear Solid:

If the PSP could play those, i would upgrade in a second. I do not care about homebrew more than i do those games. Those games are significantly better than any SNES game, ANY n64 game, ANY genesis game, and by FAR any nes game.

(not to mention NES and SNES are the only ones playable fully right now, and SNES games are great, but no where near as good as those playstation games, and the SNES emulator is still not perfect)

#11 the german guy who leaked the half life 2 source isn't a hacker for the psp , anyways it was one guy , he was put in jail when bigmouths told on him and it's a shame , he always leaked the source code of many computer games before they were released by hacking the computers of the game developers , that guy was a hacking genious , He probably could have gotten too the xource codes for elder scroll of oblivion and battlefield 2 ect. If that hacker wouldn't have been caught and put in jail I would have been his beta tester for free cause he deserves recognition , although he never told his name to anyone , he was a better hacker than fanjita and strmn mrmn and Ditlew , he could mess with other people's computers just by knowing their ip address , let's give a salute to him.

Look at what i said. I said that thsoe FIVE games are better than any thing on any other console, and that i would give up my ability to play those lesser games if i could play the 5 greater games. Come the **** on and use your human brain to ****ing use your rational thought skills. I would easily give up access to those emulated lesser games if i could get the 5 greater games, and that is what i mean. And Atari has no games that compare to those 5 greater games, nor does Gensis, gameboy*, or an arcade machine. That is why i said i would gladly upgrade.

Should have shown Final Fantasy and let the fanboys freak instead of showing Ridge Racer considering we all have Ridge Racers on PSP now. Like showing a Mitsubish Galant to impress after having everyone test drive the Ferrari.

Just watched the video. Looks very promising, but we'll take it with a pink of salt atm i think. Did anyone notice the guy change the screen aspect by pressing the screen brightness button? When he did this he says "You can change the aspect, AS IN ALL OTHER PSP GAMES". That's just not true! When has the aspect been able to be changed? Would be great for those videos which happen to not be encoded 16:9. Any ideas how Sony have done it? Is it in the firmware? Or does an eboot running, have the ability to change how buttons are mapped?

» mmmm... ps1.

I doubt the games will be 50 dollars each, I think that would buy AT LEAST 2 games.

Anyway, sounds good! Everyone's following the idea that iTunes came up with for those pre-paid mp3 cards.

And, everyone: IT WILL NEED A FIRMWARE UPDATE, NO, IT CAN NOT (AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO) RUN ON ANY FIRMWARE LOWER THAN THE NEW FIRMWARE'S VERSION!

But, yeah. I'd pay for Crash Bandicoot 1, 2, 3, CTR, maybe a Spyro, the original Gran Turismos...

Might not be a bad trade to update the firmware, but they would at LEAST have to bundle it with software that would let you convert your real disks (or make it play isos{how ever I bet the textures would have to be reduced to save mem so it probaly need converter software}) This is the same kina thing nintendo is trying to do... cash in on the emulaters, but what they dont get is that its cool because its FREE. No one wants to pay $5 for a game they could get used for $1 and download free and think about didn't we pay $50 for it new back in the day)
