Video Gamers as Deadly as the Mafia? |
Listed in: News Tags: game crime, Jack Thompson, murder
Ó

Tuesday there has been a murder in Florida (West Feliciana Parish to be exact), where a man named Michael Gore apparently was beaten to death and shot in the face because he wouldn't let two guys borrow his car. One of the teen suspects, Kurt Edward Neher (16 years old), was booked a couple of days ago for that crime. A Florida lawyer suggested to search the house of that teen suspect again... for videogames. Guess who that lawyer was? Jack Thompson.
Police seized several games from his house during the second specific search, including AO and M-rated games. Their Sheriff, Spence Dilworth, said the following: "I think it goes beyond video games, but whoÂ’s to say?" He also said that the whole violent videogame thing is "more of a debate for the living room rather than the courtroom."
The devil himself, Jack Thompson, suggested the second search on Friday and believes the games they found are a motive to the crime. He also said the way Michael Gore was killed "raised a red flag". Since naturally, its just the way we, as gamers, would choose to kill someone. Check it out: "Nobody shoots anybody in the face, unless youÂ’re a hit man or a video gamer."
He also said that the way it [the killing] happened was the same as in a scene from 'Grand Theft Auto' (he didn't mention a specific title).
Seriously, someone stop him. Please!

BAHAHAHA I love how you said that so casually. Man, what an idiot. "The killing was the same as a scene from GTA... " does he really think those guys were thinking about the video game and trying to re-enact a scene from it?

About Jack Thompson: Rockstar would make a lot of money if they "inadvertently" made one of the mob bosses in his likeness in GTA4. And allow a minigame that you can play over and over again that allows you to torture and eventually kill the boss using the same techniques and tools that were in the movie "Hostel." That minigame would work best on the Wii, though... *STAB!*
Maybe we should put a hit on him... anyone got $100,000 burnin a hole in their pocket?

people have been killing each other since the dawn of man. And now we're holding video games, which have been around for only around 30 years, responsible??
i really hoped this guy was gone from our lives since hot coffee so long ago. And now a recent story about him? Damn! I would shoot him down to hell, but it'd give ppl like hilary clinton ammunition
this guy seriously gives conservatives and republicans a bad name, calling himself one (plz no smart replies to that). This guy would more likely support a dictatorship government, where there is no internet allowed, tv/movies are censored, and it's generally a public school environment everywhere. F*ck off and get out of my life, Jack Offson!

As for Thompson what more is there to say? All we can do is promote an "Anti-Jack" to prove him wrong.

*****ing loser...He thinks everything that goes wrong is because of video games.
Oh, now that I think of it, I think I should go shoot someone in the head because I did the same thing in GTA and it was fun.

Also, there have only been 22 games rated AO (wiki), and they're usually PC games like hentai, and the Hot Coffee-modded San Andreas.

So it was most likely the original SA release.

2) The guy did not relate anything to the games.
3) I have TV shows where people shoot other people in the face.
4) I have played every GTA, and have yet to see this gun fight.
5) The kid wanted the other guys CAR, and didnt want to kill him just because.
Now, if only if people would believe these facts (mostly the first).

Video games dont kill people, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!
They don't really make a big deal about violence in movies because we have no control over what happens in movies. but we do in video games....

it's actually quite funny how he blames everything on video games.(seriously if he tripped on his shoelaces he'll try to sue the creators of nintendogs)
When in doubt blame games

The point of my fake little story made from sarcasm is that people don't like to take blame for anything anymore. If a pedophile shoots semen on a 8 year old little girl everyone else say's that he is mentally ill and unstable. More excuses to be used. I played alot of mature rated games even before I was 18, and no effect on me what so ever. The same goes for my cousin's as well, but who ever buys the mature rated game are partially responsible. If I made a bloody, gorey, realistic, simulating murder game included with rape and labeled it for Adults only. Some dumb mom will buy that 11 year old that game and then tell the media that she didn't know it was for adults even when the boxart said it was for 18+ Adults. Someone needs to teach Jack thompson a lesson, like he's at the movie theaters watching the omen. Someone needs to pretend like they are being posessed and attack him. Actually thats funny

The only reason Y jack doesnt like games is because all he got for christmas is a monopoly board and when he finnaly got a chance to play halo he go owned 25 to -2 and he got so mad because his older brother got a ps2 and wouldnt let him play gta so he got so mad that he wanted to become a video game activist to make everyone is good at games try to get it banned. Then he bribed a 16 year old with a xbox 360 to go shoot someone in the face and told him to wear a halo t-shirt and wait till he gets arrested! Dont ask how I know, I just do : )

this whole argument actually is nothing new. i mean, rock music and violent films both had this before. but you look at musicians and filmmakers, theyre all clever people. i doubt you'll ever see steven spielberg or mick jagger shoot anyone in the face, and this goes for the same with sid meier, will wright and john carmack. and how did they learn their skills? by playing games, just as spielberg watched movies and jagger listened to music. so don't you 'Jack Thompson' come with you *****in empty accusations. even for a lawyer Jack Thompson is a genuine *****.

"Oh, this guy got run over by a car, the people must have been recreating a scene from GTA."
"Oh, this guy got shot, the people must have been recreating a scene from Halo."
"Oh, I've been shot in the face, that dude must have been recreating a scene from Hitman."
Do we see a pattern emerging here?
I'm also sure that these constant threats are not helping the gamers' cause. Jacky Boy's just gonna find them, and say "Oh, well this person has been influenced by video games, so we have to ban them" (Notice that he never mentions movies, or human instincts).
Sure, some people are going to think that playing as somebody in a video game means that it's alright in real life, but that's not the case in just about all of the gamers. Movies are far more realistic too; they are acted by...real people; the wepaons look...real; and overall movies just look...real. I know a lot of people have been saying that video games are ultra realistic, but unfortunately, that is not the case as of these days. Also, real life is far more realistic than either. Sometimes people just want to kill somebody because they are in serious need of something.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that although video games are realistic, they are not the prime source of violence in our lives, so why should they be blamed?
Another point I have to mention is this:
"He also said that the way it [the killing] happened was the same as in a scene from 'Grand Theft Auto' (he didn't mention a specific title)."
How did he find this out? Did he play the games himself? Did he talk to his sworn enemy, video gamers and ask them if such a scene was present in the GTA series? Whatever way he did it, he has broken his own values. Doesn't this tell you something?
Also, I do not recall any scenes in GTA where you beat someone to death and then shoot them in the face (but correct me if I am wrong). Does this indicate that Jack just needs some sort of excuse, so he just makes something up, and blames it on a very popular video game in America, which means that it must be true, as he's a lawyer?
I think that's all from me.

C'mon, guys like this lawyer arent promoting better community values that tell kids its not OK to take guns or knives to school (or why the need for metal detectors at schools since before the games he says cause this desensitization ?), all they are doing is making their target of obsession glorified in the media.
My guess: he couldnt get into the priesthood and preach to a willing flock so he became a lawyer to try and dictate to an unwilling audience.
Reply
I said this more than once and I will say it again, the problem is that stupid kids shouldn't be able to play these games, I'm not stupid enough to go around killing people, and even if I did I wouldn't be stupid enough to do it like that guy.
If these people actually played games they would know for a fact that if you kill someone no-one knows about it it's crucial (Hitman anyone?), and where does a 16 year old get a gun please tell me because if 16 year olds can get guns than maybe games are not your biggest problem here.
I'm glad I played all those games, most of them I could only play next year and maybe then they would not be as much as fun.
Going back a little peaople are stupid, a person that cannot distinguish real from fantasy is just stupid and should not be allowed to have a GUN. I have a lot of friends that played games that are for ages above them and they didn't kill anyone, they didn't torture anyone. What the ***** is wrong with you, go find an ***** like this and give them a weapon, yeah now that is smart, hey he killed someone, it's because he played violent games, not because he had a wepon and was completely out of is mind confusing fantasy with reality.
oh and sorry for the long speech but these things piss me of.

the first thought in Jack Thompson's mind after this tragedy was probably "how can i profit from this? I'll tell them to check for video games! That should be good publicity!" and look, hes getting some good publicity isn't he. I bet he never even stopped to think of an alterior motive. Like, oh i dunno, maybe the guys are just crazy? bad upbringing? heck there are many factors at work in the mind of criminals, not just "ill shoot this guy in the face cause i love GTA."
i am a video game player, and although i dont play games like gta, i play oblivion. Am i going to go out and shoot someone with a bow? or maybe buy a sword and go lops someone's head off? not bloody likely. i am probably one of the most docile people around. i am getting *****ing fed up of being lumped into a category of hitmen and assassins because i enjoy video games. and yeah theres blood in some of the games i play. do i think its real? hell no! i can seperate fantasy from reality. and i love my fellow man (or woman). Well, most of em anyways. But i would never dream of actually inflicting harm to anyone, no matter what.
"Nobody shoots anybody in the face, unless you’re a hit man or a video gamer." Yeah, thats gotta be it. I'm *****ing insane, watch out, cause im ordering a huge battle axe off ebay.
I hate to say it, but if Mr. Thompson keeps pressing his one-sided views, and the wrong people feel threatened....well let's just say Mr. Thompson may just end up being the next "GTA inspired murder".
Although i dont advocate violence, I seriously wouldn't cry if this guy didn't exist anymore.

Much research has been done on the subject, and there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that video games encourage violence in children. In fact, children who frequently play GTA have better problem-solving skills than those playing chess. Also, are yound boys not encouraged to play war with toy soldiers, or play 'Cops and Robbers' and pretend to shoot each other? A child pretending to shoot a friend in real life is surely more harmful than a 16yr old cartoonishly shooting a policeman.
Violent games do not encourage violent behaviour, because they never offer a choice. They say "Here's a gun, shoot the bad guys." Only when the game offers a moral choice between violence and compassion, and then rewards the violence, are children going to become violent - and even then, only if that is the only thing teaching them morality in their life. Where are their parents?
If the murder was approached forensically, one would see that a shot to the face, means the the murderer knew the victim personally. Nothing more. Murderers shoot people they know in the face, so they won't recognise the corpse as a friend to alleviate guilt. Not to mimic video games.
Humans have an intrinsic understanding of the difference between fantasy and reality. If the murderer can't make that distinction, then how can he be labeled sane enough to get a gun?

But on the other hand, if video games really do cause violence, then something needs to be done. Im not sayin games like GTA should be banned. But if they somehow proved that video games were the cause for violence and things, then somethin needs to be done
Imagine you were a family that lost a loved one, and there was a small possibilty that that could have been avoided, if the killer had not played some of these games. How devistated would you be?
I like the odd violent game, i think they are really fun, and i am not sayin they should be taken off everyone - because the majority dont go around shooting peoples heads off. But the sick people that might, should not be given these types of games.
They need to be stricter on age ratings if you ask me. If a game says 18+/M on it. Make sure that the person is not just going to give it to a child when they get home. I know the person could just lie, but its only one suggetsion.
Or even put warnings on the back of games (like cigarettes) saying things like "Can cause...". People need to see that these many violent things, can't be being helped by video games....
MY 2 CENTS!!!

On the other hand, Jack Thomson has no clue what he's saying though, because if these kids didn't learn it from video games, they would've learned it from a movie instead. Maybe they would've beaten someone with a baseball bat like in Casino, or cut his ears off then poured gas on him like in Reservoir Dogs.
This simply means f**cked up kids are finding new glamorized ways of committing murders, it doesn't mean MORE murders are happening as a result of entertainment. Maybe if we were all amish no one would kill anybody? Like there weren't psycho killers in the 60s and 70s (Or before Jesus for that matter)! LOL

Jack Thompson is misguided and wrong. But I think if he would take the time to hunt a little further south of the issue, he'll find that Video Games are not the problem.
The problem is with idiots. Idiots like you people whom threaten him with death and end up making that a**hole look good.
Why do you think that the government listens to him in the first place? Because so many people like you noobs are too stupid to defend your rights properly.
Be informed. Write intelligent letters to congress defending yourself and your rights as gamers. Get involved. Do something to stick up for what you believe in using the proper channels instead of just saying you're going to shoot him in the face, like some retarded, braindead idiot noob.
If there's one thing I'm sick of even more than Jack Thompson, it's morons like you that allow him to look like he's winning. Face it. Most of you add to the problem rather than do jack sh*t about it.

they will associate anything with anything just to get a story - the greedy little bastadz
Video games keep people like me busy so i dont get too bored and go killing people.
Infact i beleive there should be a benefit which the government gives to you monthly to buy about 6 or 7 games.
games keep teenagers & young people off the street (thus keeping them off drugs, drink and fights)
See the reality.
dont beleive the media.

Certain compaines like Rockstar are frequently in his sights, and I'm suprised he hasn't found something evil and sickening about their tenis game yet. Maybe he does have a brain after all? Nah, impossible.
I would say he ought to be killed in a manor similar to GTA just to be ironic, except that would simply prove his point, therefore I say we just make sure he "disappears" for the next, oh, forty years.
Just kidding, btw.
