Video download service for the PSP

Another serviceA brief report over at the Interactive Investor says that Sony will offer a video download service for the PSP during the first quarter of 2007. The scheme somehow involved downloading video content to a PC for a one-time transfer to a PSP.

No word on the format, but so far reports say that a 4GB memory stick has the capacity to store about 10 feature films. There are also reports that Sony is negotiating with Amazon, Movielink, and CinemaNow to provide content.

Promising? Maybe... if only the whole thing was something more similar and as open as this.

» @ Shatterdome

p-tv is Japan exclusive, as it is a japanese TV company. If we get a similar system in the US or other territories chances are it will not be called p-tv.

Uhh, didn't other companies already start to fill this void? Like Google Video? Mind you, most of the things on there aren't full length episodes of anything (or if they are, they're not legal), and you can't download directly to your PSP, but it's damn close.

Sometimes, I swear, Sony doesn't even listen to itself, though. They've been hyping the PSP's video playback since the thing came out, but they crippled it (limited formatting), tried to lock it up (Remember when 2.70 came out and all our video converters failed to work?), then pretty much ignored it. Meanwhile, MPlayer/MEncoder, FFMPEG dominated the FOSS/Linux market, PSP Video 9 grabbed Windows, and ffmpegX rules the Mac roost, allowing us to put whatever we want on our PSPs for free. The PSP video void in the US has been filled, now Sony wants it back. I think the video service is going to fall flat on its face, given that people aren't about to start paying for what they've had for free for so long.

» Maybe not

It could be successful, but seeing that its Sony, probably not.

If when they say that Sony is inking deals with Amazon, Movielink, and CinemaNow, it would be nice if it meant you would be able to sign in to those services with a pre-existing account, then, heres the kicker, be able to download any previously purchased programs, or purchase new ones.

What they need to avoid is that consumers don't like having to pay twice for their content. Its bad enough if you already own the dvd, as ripping it would be free. However, if you download a show for your computer, there is no way you're gonna want to pay again for it on the psp. iTunes fails here, maybe Sony can succeed (hey, stop snickering).

Perhase an even better solution would be if they teamed up with a subscription based movie download service (Vongo?). I'm not sure of Vongo's current model, but downloading a movie to the psp could act as using one of your download "slots".

In my opinion this would be the ideal solution, but i doubt Sony is willing to give up the reigns. (ie. here Amazon or whoever controls the downloading bandwidth/content, and is the first recipient of payment. I can't imagine Sony being on board with that, but we can hope, no?)
