PSP Phone? - Image 1Looks like we're gonna be seeing another handheld from Sony sometime in the unknown future. Reports are circulating on the Internet revealing that the gaming giant has just been granted a patent by the US Patent & Trademark Office for a handheld that incorporates touchscreen features.

Hmm.. PSP Phone, anyone? Now, now. We don't want to get you all excited over something that is far from being confirmed yet. But for what it's worth, you're free to speculate on this patent's application. Admit it, after that heartbreaking categorical denial from Sony last year, that would be sweet if it did turn out to be the PSP Phone, right?

Interesting, isn't it? The documents show ex-Sony exec Phil Harrison as the inventor for this patent. Now that he's with Infogrames, it's a wonder if Sony will still push through with this. Frankly, we don't see any reason why not. They have been awarded the rights, after all. Besides, another entry in the handhelds arena won't be so bad, too. Competition always drives ingenuity after all.

Anyways, you might as well stack this news at the back of your head for now, cause patent approvals like this doesn't mean we'd be hearing anything substantial soon. Some even takes years to come to fruition. In the meantime, keep those fingers crossed.

» Oh Joy

Time for Sony to steal ANOTHER one of someone else's ideas and use it as though it was their own. Get ready for the DSP everyone!

That's the way every industry works. When a new technology comes out in one company, the others try to incorporate that new technology into their own products. Whether it is Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo...they've all copied some aspect of the other consoles or electronics out there. It has been that way through history. It's what leads to newer advancements and ultimately is better for all of us.

» don't care how old this news is

It's nice to know Sony has something planned for when the PSP's 10 year lifespan has ended.

» Seems to me, the touch screens meant for something else.

It will be in the PSP phone but that device will not be coming till next year or whenever PSP2 comes out.

Anyway the patent is for PSP2 and some more of Sony's little handheld devices, they have been working on the PSP2 for along time.

PSP2, NOT PSP SLIMMER, I mean a BIG UPGRADE TO PSP!

Anyway if you have played with the device known as Mylo 2, the second Mylo, PSP2 will come out with that and also even more than just that.

I have done my research. PSP phone may come out soon but it may come out around the launch of the PSP2.

You know like the PS1-PS2-PS3.

» My God!

You and every other person that thinks putting a touch screen on a product is to "steal" someone's idea is a downright moron. PDAs have had touch screens for ages and I've been playing ROMS on a PDA long before the DS even existed. Hundreds, if not thousands of other products use touchscreens. There's nothing revolutionary about them to make such a big deal about it. PSP should have had a touch screen to begin with, but it would have made it very expensive unless they compromised the quality of the screen by using cheaper and smaller ones like the DS. I'm glad that PSP has one great screen instead of two *****ty ones.

In fact the only thing that Sony could possibly steal from the DS is having two screens. DS + Dual Screen, get it? That's why the damn thing is called DS because that's the only unique about it, not friggin touchscreen. Moron.

Well if we are going there then Nintendo stole the DS touch screen feature from Palm.

Bring the PSP2 w/Touch Screen

I hope you are not serious.

Anyway, I don't they are making both. More like a combination of both. PSP2 will have phone capabilities, that's for sure. The question is when it will come out.
