UK Retailer Sells PSP Games Before Release Date

Activision PSP launch titles and UMD movies have been sighted on the shelves of a central London Virgin Megastore ahead of the official European September 1st release date of the PSP. The trio of Activision launch titles including Spider-Man 2, Tony Hawk’s Underground Remix and Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade were sitting alongside UMD movie Old Boy, so it’s possible that Sony hasn’t been strict enough in giving retailers instructions on when to start selling. Personally, I think retailers in the UK should rebel against Sony and just start selling them whenever.

UK users have had to wait long enough for the console (which will probably be identical to US/Japanese models). The system of releasing consoles in Japan, then America and finally Europe is tired and pointless. That’s one area where Microsoft will be innovating with a global release of the Xbox 360. In other news, Sony has confirmed that the Oxford Street HMV will be open past midnight on the 31st August so insomniac gamers can go pick up a PSP, finally.

Not like Sony's going to do anything to those stores that sold a few days before it's supposed to be released.

So, now we combat slow news with pointless news?

Hmm....

Anyways, aren't there supposed to be a bunch of folks who imported PSPs from other places already? Maybe part of the strategy is to start making money off of those people but playing like they're just releasing stuff early?

Actually, gamefaqs listed those games as being released on august 26th. Found it a bit strange myself.

Erm.. no.
These games are available everywhere as of 26/08/05, as well as Darkstalkers. They were received as a normal delivery, nothing special, and suppliers have been telling retailers that they are onsale 26/08/05.
These games are supposed to be onsale. Either that, or something has really gone wrong with the distributor.. which is very.. very unlikely, seeing as all game, gamestation and TheGamesCompany stores have these games on the shelves.

Its just games and movies! Not the system itself! I had stores near me like EB selling Ridge Racer and Untold legends and some other games about 2 or 3 days before the US release

Microsoft will be innovating

Bullcrap, Microsoft have never, will never, innovate anything. They are a classic icon of 'corporate America' and as such the mere mention of them disgusts me.

As for the topic at hand, I certainly think retailers should start selling when stock arrived, I really hate this release date concept. I remember when the PS2 came out, I pre-ordered mine but couldn't receive my unit 1 friggin day early because Sony dictated it so. And this was when I was living in Australia so as usual they were treating us like the arse end of the planet (actually, they were probably right). Thankfully, living in Japan now has turned the tables on the situation somewhat.

They'll still be Marching off the shelves as the poor buggers have had to wait so long at leave the material satisfaction of owning one or two games will num the pain a little :)

You'd be suprised at the number of people who are buying from Europe and Australia rather than importing. 3 game shops have already sold out of their first allocations NATION WIDE!

I noticed the three games mentioned priced up and on the shelves in HMV in Manchester on Saturday, so it looks as though they are selling early too.

Thing was though they had them at £40, whereas all the other shops say the games will be £30-35. Looks like HMV are trying to rip off people who want to get their hands on the games early.

In Spain games has been in released a few days ago. I remember going to the game.es shop of my town to check prices:
Games are 50€ -> $61.5
Movies are 20€ -> $24.5

9 months later... more expensive and without the 'well known' European consumer warranty. I waited and expected to pay more because in Europe if the consumer is not happy with what he buys he has, simply, the right to exchange it.... well, that's also over with PSP ...Sony announced that won't exchange units with less than 7 dead pixels. Also Sony pressures made LikSang unable to send games here.
You guys have no idea of how happy made me the latest news about downgrading PSP with Yoshi's soft. I'll be assraped with the machine but Sony, I swear, won't see an euro from my pocket. Ebay's international sellers and the scene are on my side.

Addition:

Yoshi = Yoshihiro = God

Btw, in my opinion this guys is releasing not only the very best hack...he also was smart enough to wait releasing it so there's nothing Sony can do.

The official launch date for these titles was 26/08/05 and the RRP as mentioned earlier is £39.99. Activision titles have a higher cost to the retailers by roughly £2.50 to £5.00 each, why I dont know, It's not like the titles on sale are any good.
