UK anti-censorship petition regarding Manhunt 2 in full swing |

The BBFC refusing to rate Rockstar Games' Manhunt 2 for either the Wii, PS2, or PSP has sparked the ire of many an adult gamer in Europe. An online petition which was started on the website of new British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has emerged with hundreds of people joining in to fight the censorship of the game.
Only UK citizens are open to join in this petition, though it may be assumed that more of these will be occurring in the next few weeks. So far there are 830 signatories in this online petition. Bradley Smith, the creator of this movement, gave a few words that are reminiscent of those spoken by Former ELPSA boss Roger Bennett.
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Restrict the powers of the BBFC with regard to the banning of videogames.The BBFC have recently refused to rate the videogame Manhunt 2.
As such, adults in this country will never be allowed to play this game. Adults should be allowed to make their own decisions with regard to what videogames they want to play. We all understand that this game is extremely violent and unsuitable for children. As such an 18 rating should have been applied.

People wholeheartedly agree that Manhunt 2 is not for children and should not be played by them. However, to prevent adults from playing the game may not have be the best way to handle the situation.

I got the e-mail of the Uk prime minister Tony Blair and e-mailed him. Hopefully he might actually do something about this and end all this controversy fast and finish banning the game. Anyways here is what I wrote him:
This message is in regards to the controversial game Manhunt 2. First of all,
I'm wrinting this letter because I ask of you to support the authority of the
BBFC to not give a rating to the controversial, mentally ill, sadistic and
ultraviolent game known as Manhunt 2 and ban the game in the UK. I know you are
in lots of pressure from the people of different views that ask this game to be
given an Adults Rating instead of being banned but I'm concern how this game can
affect such a great country as the UK. The side against the banning of the game
claim that if this game is rated an adult rating there will be no problems
caused by this controversial game, but there is no doubt games like this reach
the hands of kids everyday which their maturity is not enough to help them stand
against the bad influences of such a game which contains excessive killing,
torture, gore, violence, and more. This factors have an effect on such kids and
can mold them to commit domestic violence, abuse others or even become criminals
themselves and commit outrageous acts depicted in the game such as murder and
torture. In addition, such a game can affect the social interaction of the
player in real life and cause immediate and long term consequences to their life
which are irreversible. The problem here is that many innocent lives would be
affected if this game is not stopped and the priority of the government is to
protect the citizens of it's society, which in this case it's more important to
protect the lives of hundreds of people than to satisfy the demented, sadistic,
perverted and mentally ill joy of a number of people who's mental nature exhorts
them to find joy in such violent and outrageous acts. One things noone who has
visited the UK can deny is how amazing and great the society in the UK is, from
it's social and curtural aspects that few countries in the world can offer. If
such a game were to affect the great society of the UK it would be ashame,
especially if it were in the form of violence. I hope you can consider this
message even though I'm a teenager from Puerto Rico (16 years old) and I don't
live in the UK but what I really want you to consider a lot the harms this game
could cause to many citizens of the UK and how unfortunate events caused by this
game could affect the UK society which left me in awe when I visited London.
Hopefully he'll do something for good PR (or rep) in regards to this message.
i wouldnt sign it. rockstar need to be taught a lesson. their games have become more and more pathetic, where the purposefully try to create the most disguisting degenerate games that they can, purely to appeal to sh*thead immature gamers out there. i dont MIND violent disturbing games (the original manhunt was quite good), but rockstar goes too far by trying to appeal to the degenerates out there.. a great example is the sex minigame in gta sa... how f**ked up in the head do you have to be to find that a 'great, creative and necessary piece of gameplay'... i hope the banning stays and FORCES rockstar to fold and edit the game, not because i wouldnt want to play it uncut, but purely so that they learn a lesson that theyve gone way too far. and just to repeat what i said earlier, im NOT against violent games, i quite enjoy them - this is about rockstar learning a little responsibility, restraint, and perhaps getting some kind of moral compass...

Rockstar creates amazing, taboo-breaking, movie-like games for all the platforms. They also create the most quality games for the PSP - in terms of graphics, UMD space usage, sound, gameplay etc.
I don't want anyone to castrate one of the best companies in the industry, just because some idiotic law restricts computer games in terms of adult themes.

once upon a time, rockstar made great classic games that were great fun to play, and while were mature, still had limits. now that they see there is a market of giggling little immature teenagers like you, theyve gone over the top.

I liked most of R* earlier games but they have just gotten worst and worst. I played a little of Manhunt 2 at one of the SCEA events a little while ago and it was lame. It had a very poor storyline and it seemed like all it did was try to use violence to sell the game. It's like the Hostel movies if you take away the gore then there is nothing left just garbage. Also people keep saying that banning the game is a violation of free speech. Remember it wasn't banned in America, it's just with the AO rating there won't be alot of stores that will sell it. And those policies were in place long before Manhunt 2 came out. After all just because you can do something under the banner of "free speech" doesn't mean you should use some common sense..

I think this game should be banned as the claim that the game wont get to children is a load of ****, as I am a child and my friends have all the manhunt games and all the gta's and I realise that it is the parents responsibility but to be honest manhunt has no real plot and is all about brutal violence which imo contributes nothing to the world.

I see there are a few people saying this game should be banned. Fair enough, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I think the point your missing is that if they censor and ban this game, whats to stop them from banning other games. I mean, obviously that possibility has always been their, but whats to say that ESRB and BBFC wont go harder on games if they get away with this banning? (on a side note, I know the ESRB only gave it an AO but that is essentially banning a game in North America) What if a game like, Hellgate: London or Bioshock start getting banned because of violence? What will people say then? When it comes down to it, this whole situation is preposterous simply because, 1. It has been proven that this game is no worse then horror flicks that are being released. 2. This game is no worse then the first one. 3. This game is not meant for children. 4. This game will not get people killed, people are gonna kill and get killed regardless of whether or not this game comes out. Now whether you a fan of the Manhunt games or not, this should be a problem for you (unless your under 18, then this shouldn't concern you) because as adults we are being told what we can and cant see, now I have a problem with that as any sane adult because really, do you want people makeing your decisions for you? First of all, Chiv didn't find the easter egg wrong but what he means is that Rockstar did this on purpose to sell games to immature people who would buy it just for the easter egg (see sales increase of GTA San Andreas at the time of the controversy), yet when it comes to taking responsibility they don't take it, they just don't follow the rules. Rockstar does create great games. For example, almost all GTA games, but one cannot deny the fact that they don't care harm that can be caused to innocent lifes because of their greedyness. Anyways, a game like Manhunt 2 is a game where only mentally ill immature kids would play to satisfy their sadistic satisfaction. This kids can turn out to commit domestic violence or even be urged to commmit a murder. Now, what is more important, the sadistic joy of some thousands of people or the innocent lives of some hundreds of people? In addtion, it's wrong of you to put Hostel 2 here cause movies have been tested to see any psycological effects that they might have on the audience just like in videogames. The facts say that videogames unlike movies can affect people because of the interactivity in such violence that immature minds can link to reality therefore creating potential dangers in our society.

People hate Saw 3, do they? Was the film banned just because a thew people disliked it? No it wasn't. It is a matter of choice. We were given the right to choose yet, the BBFC is undermining the rights of the public to choose. They can't make decisions for adults that have a right to make their own decisions.
The mentally ill shouldn't even play the game, nor should they be out in the first place without proper care or medication. That point is flawed in many cases. Many movies show violence and even worser stuff. Games are only images, adults know this. If they don't, should they even be out in public anyway?
If a kid downloads porn is it gonna affecthis life to an extent he would affect innocent lives? No. If a kid gets his hand on a game focused completely on brutal violence like Manhunt 2 will it affect his life and others? Yes. And who has the right to tell you what you can and cannot watch? The power imposed on the rating system as long as it can affect innocent lives. I also think the law has the right to tell you you can't hurt, kill, or tamper someone else's life.
The sex minigame wasn't an official feature and it was supposed to be removed, and I don't recall them thinking it was great, nor necessary (I've had GTA:SA for a year, never found it--cause you can't access it without hacking the game.)
And needing to be taught a lesson is NEVER a reason to perform an action such as this, that sets precedence to ban video games, or anything, because people don't like them. If you ban this, you're in effect saying 18 year olds can't handle this stuff, which I find entirely untrue.

Sony and Nintendo (owners of the only consoles to see manhunt 2) say no to AO titles on their games. That basically means a ban.
I personally see no apeal to MH2, and won't be buying it, but that doesn't mean it should be banned--I don't like and haven't bought tons of games, but I know some people do like them, and good for them.

The ratings are a weak system that needs to be updated. It was only put into motion for weak violence shown on Mortal kombat. And that game hasn't been banned.
